Probably by making a pull request or issue and explaining in detail why you believe the logo should be changed to yours.
The problem is; while your version may look nicer at ~500 pixels, the increased details will make it look like absolute ass in the tiny toolbar icon which is how you'll actually end up seeing it. There's no way he'll use it.

Drop the drop shadows (hue) and make the white border thicker instead of having that dark red.
It may look too thick as full size but remember the amount of downscaling needed to fit in toolbars.
Consider dropping the gradient red as well, or at least make it more subtle.
I think it would actually look quite good that way.
