Didnt nvidia also release a driver one upon a time that caused cards to die? Shit happens. Bottom line is always be somewhat weary when making a hardware, software of driver change. If i overclock my cpu, you better beleive im using my pc with extra scrunity after to look for issues.
When i get new gpu drivers i want to see the affect on performance and temps.
If you care about your PC and are the slightest bit responsible, 99% of these kinds of issues can be outright avoided.

It's doesn't matter since Nvidrones have already latched onto this and it will be their favorite meme for the next 5 years, but this is only effecting people who OC or used a third party GPU controller and didn't reset the setting before installing Crimson. yea, idk how this would kill the gpu. even with the fan on minimum, it's hard to get it to go over 100c because it just throttles.
I've started the gpu without a heatsink briefly and it got up to 200c and still was fine afterwards. I think people are just trying to scam amd into giving them free graphics cards.

i use msi afterburner with my r9 390 and i have crimson i have had no issues with heat during gameplay it only goes to 60c but i do deal with shitty amd drivers

Possibly a stupid question but if I have an afterburner profile set on boot will this issue affect my GPU? I have set the fan curve myself, and if it applies the settings on boot then my guess is it overrides the crimson fan lock problem just like it overrides catalyst settings.
Haven't really looked into all this, and neither do I have time to test due to a slew of deadlines so I'm not playing games or anything.

Overdrive overwrote my custom fan profile in Afterburner when I had the bug a while ago. It happened only once, though, next reboot the fan speed matched Afterburner no problem.
There's still a problem, but if you measure your GPUs all the time it shouldn't be a problem. I noticed when my temps were suddenly spiking into the lower 80s while the fan speed stayed immobile.

This makes me wonder if AMD will ever release Crimson without Overdrive. Overdrive used to very easy to disable on Catalyst, but now it's always running in the background.
I don't think people have a grasp on how tough graphics cards are. In my htpc, I had an old hd 4870 that I cool with a passive cooler (the arctic cooling one). It can get to like ~100c on 60 fps video and it's already almost a decade old and shows no sign of stopping. It's expendable at this point, so I don't even care if it dies, but it refuses to die.
These aren't fragile chips that need to be babied to stay alive. Quite the opposite, they can take huge amounts of punishment. And people are being scammed into buying exotic thermal pastes thinking it will help in some way.

Accepting the agreement is all that stands between anyone and Overdrive, and I've heard unconfirmed reports of people having bugs even without ever accepting any of that horseshit. It's always bloody there, try overclocking on Trixx or Afterburner, then switch to Overdrive, which has now magically copied the clocks of those programs. But what if it goes wrong? what if Overdrive bugs out again and fails to or incorrectly takes over settings from other OC software?
