Why would you ever go for Debian in this day and age?
It was a fine distribution in 2011, but nowadays it's more annoying than anything. It's even easier to install Arch nowadays if you use something else to install it (architect or antergos for example) than it is Debian, because by default Debian mixes up languages and timezones (you want en-us? Then you had better live there) in the graphical installer.

Debian used to be comfy. Stable and decent. But Arch without AUR doesn't seem to ever crash.

Sorry, I'm a bit salty about Debian nowadays. It's just declining so hard. Arch gives me great battery life even with GNOME, Debian on OpenBox gives me.. 2011 levels of power consumption.

I like Debian but I can't help but feel it doesn't have that much a use outside server tier stability.

These days it's essentially Ubuntu without any niceties.

I learned a lot using it and it was the cornerstone for me switching to Arch. But I don't really see the appeal of having it as your everyday desktop OS.

how do you install arch?
i tried archbang and it's shit.

Timesink OS and Freetard OS
>>
>>51609698
The two times I've installed it I just watched a youtube video and followed that.

Made a few mistakes both times(mainly with the local and time) but all were easily fixed post install.

The only thing I was worried about was accidentally wiping my storage drive so I disconnected it for safety. Though that was a bit excessive.

Check the wiki for a guide

basically, learn how to use linux and the CLI since you obviously dont asking this

boot to the arch iso

connect to the internet

setup lang, locale and pacman mirrors

setup partitions in cgdisk/cfdisk, one for root and one for grub, mkfs ext4

mount your root drive to /mnt, install base with pacstrap

chroot into /mnt, setup user, logins, sudo, basic programs, internet etc

then install GRUB

exit chroot, unmount your root partiton and reboot into it

>>51609730
AUR is fine, they're memeing

every program you install from literally anywhere could do the same, just be as smart as you normally would

I mean. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Linux, but it's the most enjoyable distro I've used so far. It's nice to tinker with and it feels surprisingly user friendly(mostly due to the arch wiki).

You can also try Antergos for a while. No matter what the Arch elitists say it's a fairly solid distro and the knowledge I gained there helped me a lot when I first started using Arch.

Never claimed I wasn't.

>>51609797
My phone is shit and I hate suing the browser on it. While a video is fairly easy to play.

Though I originally used it just for my first try on a VM. Then when I wanted to try it "for real" I just used the same tutorial because everything worked out fine and I'm lazy. I just skipped all the VB specific stuff.

Haven't had any problems yet.
>>
OP Here.

Okay, so we conclude that Arch is a better choice for a Desktop OS, but what about installing it on a Raspberry Pi?

Do you recommend me installing Arch Linux ARM or Raspbian?

Wouldn't this guide fail to set up your new user as a sudoer?
>>
>>51610293
yes, type in visudo to add any user to the sudoers' list
>>
>>51609698
I personally just used Antergos and tweaked it afterwards. But it only works well on GNOME, the other variants aren't properly setup, in which case you might as well install Arch yourself.

Only Crunchbang was pretty good. It had the visuals and the hipster appeal, Bunsenlabs, CB++ and ABang just aren't the same.
If you want Openbox+visuals+hipster, then I suggest starting at the Desktop Threads.

>>51609730
While Arch without AUR is very stable, AUR is a great bonus for using Arch in the first place.

What is the most equivalent Debian branch to Arch, stable(clearly not), unstable or testing?

is there anything like the AUR for Debian?

>Debian is pretty solid

The one thing that I really wish Debian would have, which would make me switch is Pacman, and the AUR - but I guess that's an Arch thing
>>
>>51612787
>Arch is unstable and will fuck up if you mess around too much
If you "mess around too much" you will break anything, that has nothing to do with Arch. It's also not really unstable for home use, everyone here who have used it have said that it hasn't broken at any point. I'm using it too and it's the same thing for me.
>>
>>51609749
I broke my yast package management 3 days after install and had to upgrade from my ISO again to fix it. Donno if it has to do with gnome or just the 4 different managers in general.

Use openSUSE. It's pretty easy to get accustomed to from a noob's point of view and useful later on as you learn how to Lunix more
