Now that the Raspberry Pi Zero is being given away for free, what's you're excuse for not trying based Linux, Winfags?
>>
>>51593811
I don't have a subscription to that magazine and I don't want one, so it's not free for me.
>>
>>51593836
Yea, I guess $5 is still a little much to fork over for just the pi.

So with this you could set up a 20-unit cluster for $100 ?
>>
>>51594015
yes
By using USB to RJ-45 adapters and connecting all 20 of them
But it would just be like a poodle, it looks cute and shit but you wouldn't be able to do anything even remotely useful, except really small tasks like hosting a tiny website

yea makes sense. actually i'm pretty sure these have the identical pinouts to the 2b, so I2C could be used for 5Mbps internode communications, which would be just the cost of some pins and a couple of wires between units.

Also, that would be 20 1Ghz 32bit cores to use. If nothing else it's an incredibly cheap cluster project for Uni.

BUT LOONIX

DONT YOU WANT YOUR DOORBELL TO RUN LOONIX?
>>
>>51594282
It's pretty lacking out of the box. I mean, no internet? I get that the size makes it hard to stick an ethernet port onto it, but what about Wi-Fi? THe CHIP has it, and I woulda totally bought one if it had net, even if it was a few bucks more.

And that's why I'm buying CHIP.
>>
>>51594282

1) Pis are hardly 'fully functional' even once you get all the necessary peripherals (like a power cord, a sd card, a network adapter, etc). You can compute (slowly) on them, I guess. They are hardly the equivalent of even good PCs from 10 years ago.

2) You need all those peripherals before you can say it's fully functional.

Look - I like pis fine, and use a few in some home projects, but calling them 'free, fully functional linux boxes' is just not anywhere close to true.

>>
Would it be possible to run Gig ethernet through the HDMI port?
>>
>>51595913
Interesting. Probably not unless you hacked something together to take over the GPU (which is programmable btw).

That would be a killer-app if you did it anon. I'd build a cluster from that alone.
>>
>>51595851
It's out now if you can find one. HDMI is pretty much worthless if you want to hook it up to a network unless you want to add a powered USB hub to the price in which case you're better off just buying a Raspberry Pi B+.
>>
>>51596018
Why wouldn't the HDMI and networking work together anon? The HDMI is separate circuitry from the USB system IIRC.
>>
The zero needs a bunch of adaptors to really use it

>>
>>51593811

Odroid C1 is the most bang for the buck, but Raspberry Pi Foundation will get longer term support.
>>
>>51594242
Would it be possible to let a clyster communicate via the GPIO? I'd imagine it would be a lot cleaner than having x converters for y cables.
>>
>>51596337
Yes, the GPIO has a comm buss built in already, it's called I2C. It's currently limited to 5Mbps though, and isn't likely to be updated anytime soon as it's an older protocol intended for industrial control systems like robots.

But still, if all you're doing is transferring small packets of signalling and control data it should work fine.

I like this one. The PCDuino3. The reason I chose it over the Odroid was that not only does it have a SATA port, but can also boot from it. It's the only SBC that I can think of that can. The Banana Pi for example has SATA, but you still have to boot off of the SSD card.

It does cost more than a Rasberry Pi though, but it's still under $100. It's a much more powerful system too however, plus if you're interested in messing around with Arduino it's basically a cheap PC with a built in Arduino.

The Radxa Rock, Odroid, Wandboard, Hummingboard, and Cubbieboard seem worth checking out too.

>>
>>51594015
Yup. But it would be fairly useless. If you add in all the different costs together (power supplies, SD cards, switch, cables), the same money could build a desktop that would outrun it on identical code. Someone did the comparison with hadoop. Yeah yeah, the java runtime is a pig, and JIT on x86-64 is way better than on ARM, but it still stands.
