New drivers can set your fan speed to 20%, overheating the fuck out of your gpu and sometimes even killing it, there's several reports of dead cards already.

Oh I am LAUGHING now. You amdrones, not even 12 hours ago, were once more flinging shit about Nvidia drivers.

So lets see...in the last 8 months AMD drivers have:
>fried their cards
>created irresolvable BSODs by permafucking the registry on win8.1 and win10
>had 2 WHQL drivers that would crash 2-3x an hour at idle and every 5 minutes under load
>released driver-bundled software containing a malicious rootkit
>>
>>51592283
No, instead they've done it on several occasions.

"According to incgamers, several people have had their PC or video cards croak after installing the Nvidia 196.75 drivers. StarCraft II Beta players were the first to notice a problem and following complaints that it was something to do with the latest patch from Blizzard, Blizzard tech support explained that the problem is Nvidia's latest driver and Starcraft II Beta is not the only application affected"

You claim that nVidia drivers being CONFIRMED to KILL your GPU is FUD, and yet, this problem of "Frying cards" is the fault of the user, when you open Overdrive there is a big ass warning box that reads something along the lines of "WARNING, CHANGING SHIT HERE CAN FUCK YOUR SHIT UP IF YOU'RE AN IDIOT".

People just charge into the overclocking headfirst, and only look at "Muh mhz"

No. this situation is blown out of proportion by the shear fact that people are idiots.

Is this a problem with notebook gpus or just desktop? I have an asus laptop with radeon 8670m gpu and about a week ago when i started up tribes:ascend it just turned itself off due to overheating. A few days ago, when doing a mse scan i noticed the 97 celsius temperatures and realized that the fans are off (the reason why it turned off). i put the laptop to sleep and 15 minutes later opened it and everything worked fine (fans started up), but i wonder did all this happen because of faulty drivers? laptop is little more than half a year old and was kept clean from dust all the time (kept on flat table surface so no choking of vents)

You got a source for that? Because that article doesn't mention that.
>>
>>51592762
Entering the Overdrive, the manufacturer fan profile is thrown out the window, and get dropped to what AMD deem to be a "Safe Minimum Level", but they don't take into account any Overclocks.

Instead, AMD hopes that their users would be intelligent enough to not touch their clocks without knowing what they were do, and usually people who are atleast semi-educated pay careful attention to their fan speeds.
>>
I don't know if it can fry GPUs, but the damn thing doesn't even let me get past the startup screen. Fucking AMD.

>>51592184
in my case, is the other way around
every single time I turn on my pc, the fans are spinning by default at 75% (and no, the temps are 40º when I turn it on, its a bug and not a feature)
I have to manually set it to automatic every single time
ofc I tried to apply or reset and reboot to see if it can stay on automatic but nothing
they clearly did a poor job with the fan control in this new drivers
>>
It has happened to me in the past. Olova sudden my screen signal was becoming corrupt with "noise" and I immediately thought my GPU is frying. Opened catalyst controls and saw 100+ temps while fan was at 0. From that point on I always check me fan speed and temp.

Just checked mine and it's still at the same level it was before installing Crimson, not that it matters as I'm water cooling.

Should this really be able to kill cards though? My understanding is that the card will reduce its clock speed to maintain the set maximum temperature if the max fan speed isn't adequate. Also, doesn't all modern hardware throttle or shut down the system if things reach dangerous temps? I thought the only way to kill things these days was with overvolting.
>>
>>51593583
MSI AB is properly enforcing my custom fan curve, no issues. Didn't have to fuck with it at all after the update.

Crimson does do some retarded shit for me, their shitty FPS limit keeps resetting to 55FPS whenever I run certain games, like BF4.

Question for those anon having the problem same as one posted here.

Were any of you running Beta Drivers prior to the install and did not do a wipe before upgrading? Are you running any third party GPU management software like afterburner?

Trying to find if there is a trigger to this bug because I can't for the life of me get it to happen on my R9 290.

I'm going to try purposely do a dirty update by uninstalling crimson, install beta 15.11 and install crimson over it. Maybe try afterburner as well. If any of you could answer that could help. Wish me luck.

I don't even need to mention the fact that thinking your one game is a better representation that techpowerup's performance summary from all the games they tested is completely retarded, because in the link you sent the fact that the 390, 390X, 970 and 980 all perform almost the same clearly shows there is something wrong.
At the very least it's comparing overclocked 970 and 390 to stock 980 and 390X, which is already meaningless.

Also, the techpowerup review is the 380X one and uses more recent drivers.

Crimsons sets the fan profile from auto to manual, it is a bug.

Nothing to do with the user, it's something the software is doing on it's own.
>>
>>51597748
>What are they going to do with the VRAM with the 970 being ham-stringed at 3.5?

They can't do anything about it, it's how the card was designed

They can make 2 and 4 GB versions of a 960 Ti that will still be worse than the 970 in everything but VRAM
>>
>>51597816

I wonder if it will be worth getting a 960ti with 4GB of VRAM in the long run, probably not with it being worse than the 970 in every other regard. Then again a good OC could make up for that in a way. I wonder what price point it will be at now that the 970 is sitting at 289 MSRP. Maybe something like 250?

With it being a true 3GB VRAM will it avoid the issues the 970 has once software tries to access the slower .5GB? (as far as I know that's when people experienced the stuttering and what not)
I did see a video where Shadows of Mordor did not even attempt to access a 970's extra .5GB of RAM and capped at 3.5GB usage. It seems like the 960ti will be a successor to the 560ti back in its day.
