About a decade back it would have been Perl, but Python seems to be the programming language du jour.

In short Python is the correct answer - with Python being taught in middle-school I don't see it being overthrown any time soon.

Perl is vastly superior to Python when it comes to text handling and reporting, which is what sysadmins do with scripting languages besides other maintenance tasks like backups.
