Audiophiles are about as retarded as people who use arch/gentoo, except they have a lot more money to throw around.

That said, I have no problem with either group of people, do what you enjoy.

My father is an Audiophile. Using his setup I tested him with a variety of recordings and formats. He successfully identified FLAC from 128, 196, 256 and in all but 1 case 320kbps mp3. He also managed to identify the difference between the vinyl and 24bit recordings. One example was he successfully identified LYSFLATH and the 24bit FLAC from what.cd.

I was attempting to prove him wrong, and all I managed to do was demonstrate that he's probably got golden ears...
>>
>>51566281
is this pasta
>>
>>51566281
Vinyl is easily differentiated from 24bit though, the moment you hear any additional clicking, popping, etc. in the background it becomes apparent which is which.
Now telling the difference between FLAC and 320 is an indicator of golden ears. Audiophile equipment is actually worth it for that small portion of people. I would be inclined to believe such people don't exist and it's all placebo, but I discovered I am a "supertaster" about a year ago. None if my siblings could identify ingredients but I can pretty much reverse engineer food by tasting it, and have the end result very similar. Because of this, it is plausible that the same sort of thing can happen with other senses, like hearing.
>>
>>51566365
>Now telling the difference between FLAC and 320 is an indicator of golden ears.
Yet to consistently happen in a legitimate test.

The audio goes through analog which means it is much more susceptible to interference altering the output.

However, most of the stuff shown in this thread is snakeoil. There is a point to which you effectively block interference, and then going any further is just spending money on nothing.

I'm not an audiophile and I think the whole thing is bullshit but here's supposedly why.

Sony had trouble sourcing the sound chips for the PS1 initially, so in the launchday PS1s with the RCA inputs they used a bunch of custom in-house DACs and audio processing ICs borrowed from multiple thousand dollar digital audio equipment. Because those chips honestly cost about the same as any other fucking IC to make, and they had a bunch of them lying around, so they used them in the PS1. Later versions without the direct RCA hookups don't have the chip.

>le noise from the ground

It's because audiophiles think the very HF will make noise if the cable touch the ground...but it's not true because the higher frequencies are in the kHz. It's sometimes true with MHz or GHz cable but not for speaker cables...

All the kids here won't understand, but early digital and CD audio was terrible, like you can tell it was bad without blind tests. In the 80's CDs were pretty much not fit for listening to, but things have improved somewhat in the 90's.

When the PS1 came out it was legitimately the highest quality CD player at the time, and remained that way for a while. Of course by now any half decent CD player is good enough, so all the audiophiles using PS1s are hanging on to old standards. Perhaps those units are still from back then and they just haven't had the heart to toss them. Who knows.

>when confronted with the fact that their hearing was inferior and impaired, people always get hostile. why is that?
Literally nothing to do with that. Show us the test or do one by yourself. Heck show me ONE test where anyone has been able to consistently differentiate lossless file from a say a 320kbps mp3? Because no matter how much I've looked into this subject, all I find are dozens of double blinded tests where people can't do better than a random guess and thousands or random forum posters claiming they can. I know I can't but that's not the reason why I claim people who say they can are just talking out of their ass. There's simply too many tests showing the exact opposite(and on much lower bitrates too) and no evidence to support the opposite. "Audio engineers" or whatever the fuck half of the people who make this statement claim to be have done consistently better than musicians for example in tests where the background/profession of the listener was revealed. Yet not in one test have I seen anyone being able to ABX mp3 v0 from lossless.

So do the test or provide one for us.

Had this guy at school that is a Audiofool.
He was telling me how he is getting triple braided supercables to keep out the "Electric humm" and how he is annoyed that his plug sockets are too near his setup as he can hear them.

I told him I could sell him some super ferrite that he could shield his plugs with. £200 conned out of him for some Ferrite sheathes.

He tells me his cables are not good enough and he needs some stupid £500 cables so he can hear the "clean music" I offer him some audio pebbles to make it sound better. I can give you 3 mega packets for £400. Sure.

Go down beach, get small pebbles.
Use my tumbling machine I have for my Mineral collection. they are smooth and shiny.

OOOOH THESE PEBBLES WILL BOOST MY AUDIO HARMONICS.

I conned about £2000 out of this guy in a year. he always thanks me for how nice I am.

The room itself is the most important thing..
A 10000 dollar speaker in a non treated room doesn't perform any better practicaly then a 500 dollar one..

Its: room > speaker > amp > dac
>>
>>51581216
He is right. Use at last a carpet: less reverb, deeper bass etc
>>
>>51581284
That's really debatable. I'd rather have great speakers in a shit room than shit speakers in a great room.

I assure you, if you go to walmart and buy $250 snowman-shaped speakers, you're going to find it's still shit even the most acoustically perfect room.

There's just a minimum level of quality needed for all the components. You can't have any single component be total shit.

I do agree though that people tend to not consider the room enough, but that is a variable that's much of the time beyond people's ability to change reasonably. I mean you could add some mass like some bookshelves or furniture to not make it too bouncy, or remove some furniture to not make it too dense, but I doubt you're going to reconstruct the room's dimensions/shape. However, you can always buy new speakers/DAC/AMP/etc.
>>
>>51581359
I mean $2.50 snowman-shaped speakers. I saw these once being given away with practically any purchase at Microcenter one year.
>>
>>51581380
The $250 ones probably sound about as shitty anyway.

Wouldn't it be better to use digital for the signal and put a dac+amp in or on the speaker itself? Like in terms of signal preservation that's ideal, right?

Yes and no. There's very little loss in carrying the signal with analog cables to the loudspeakers. So little that it's not even measurable with an oscilloscope in most cases. EMI can be a problem in both analog and digital but it rarely is an issue in real world if we are talking about home audio setups.

As for carrying the signal digitally to the loudspeakers, only some professional monitors do that and the benefit of it is mostly extremely accurate proprietary DSP which is used for room response correction. With that kind of software you can individually adjust frequency response and amplitude of each loudspeaker and time align them correctly for the listening position/area. Usually this is all automated, too. As far as I know there are no standards for carrying digital signals into each individual loudspeaker in such manner that you could just plug "digital" loudspeakers into a system like your computer and make it work. I hope it's the future though. No matter the loudspeakers or the room, proper use of DSP calibration can always enhance fidelity.

Audiophiles such as the owners of these setups are anal about things that matter very little or none hence you don't see anything like that here. You see no room treatment here and some of these setups are analog only: vinyl or a reel to reel tape deck as a source. And when it comes to digital audio, these people are usually concerned about "hi-res" formats or DSD which matters absolutely nothing in listening no matter the equipment used. They get stuck on fiddling around with DACs and amplifiers both of which are gear which can be completely transparent with relatively little effort. No to mention all the snake oil stuff like cables, power conditioners and whatnot.

Pic related is the JBL M2's frequency response plots on and off axis. It's a flagship professional monitor with DSP correction.

Electrical engineer here, what are you smoking? Music from a digital file is already as boosted as its going to get, unless your speakers are under 100 dollars. Anything over 1500 bucks is just a self wallet fuck.

but...what the fuck do they listen to?
>>
>>51584673

Honestly you can just use 22 gauge copper wiring from Home Depot on some second hand flea market speakers and if you understand acoustics you can put most audiophile setups to shame.

That's something that's always bothered me about a lot of these audiophile components. They buy these speakers that wont sound good in the room they put them in, but they think if they apply enough snake oil that it's somehow gonna work. They'll buy really nice speakers, though, but waste them through terrible positioning, or in a room that's too small, or has too much furniture in it for them. Then you throw together some pawn shop special using equipment from the 1990s and there's nary a difference in quality. Heck, if you do it right, shitty Onkyos can beat $1000/pair audiophile speakers.
