We use these at work to plug peoples computers into the sound system, it isn't just for microphones
It's called a 3-pin XLR and is used for all kinds of audio devices - microphones, recorders, amps, etc.
The XLR connector is damn near indestructible which is why it's favored by pros on audio gear or for use on hand-held microphones so that you don't accidentally snap it off.
