You may have slagged off my dial choice but I've got this bezel insert. It's my second one after the first fell out due to me using the wrong glue and wearing it whilst drunk. It's much better as it fit without having to be resized (had to take off about 0.5mm from the outside diameter on the first) and more impressively comes with an attached adhesive o-ring that makes installation a piece of piss. Also, £9 delivered is the cheapest you'll find and it's better than the Invicta insert.

The quality difference is obvious to the trained eyes but still a fake is a fake so that depends on how much you're willing to spend. The movement is also better as opposed to cheap quartz in a cheaper model.

The more expensive rep tends to be neigh indecipherable from the real deal though, like this comparison.

Vostok Amphibia has history. It was designed for the Soviet Navy. Vostok had to work around existing patents from other manufacturers of dive watches, and in doing so, came up with some neat design aspects. They utilized a thick, domed acrylic crystal because water pressure makes it expand into the case, forming a better seal. They also made a two-piece caseback so that the back can rest on a much larger rubber gasket, which again, creates a better seal with more water pressure. It's rated to 200m, durable enough for every day use, and costs about $60 after shipping. In addition to that, Vostok makes fucking every part of the watch. The movement, case, crystal, gaskets, it's all made by Vostok in Chistopol by people just like you see in videos from the Swiss watchmakers.. On top of that, you also have the ZA STALINAAAAA SLAVA ROSSIYA aspect that's attractive for the purpose of memes.

Not the other autist, but a vostok amphibia is rated to -20/+40s PER DAY. That's the typical range for cheap mechanicals (+-30s/mo for cheap quartz, for comparison). It is said that some vostok (not the amphibia, though), can be calibrated to within -4/+6s/d and an average quartz is +-15s/m, which is around +-0.5s/d, or 8-12x more accurate than perfectly calibrated vostoks - for cheaper, and with much less overhead for maintenance ($100+ maintenance on mechanical watches every 5 years, v.s. around $20 for a quartz).

Additionally, one shouldn't confuse rated drift with realworld drift. In real life, a quartz rated +-30s/m drifts around 1s/w or so (barring extreme cases), just like the vostok amphibia drifts around 10s/d barring extreme cases, on average. Better models, or better calibrated models, can drift as little as 5 seconds in a year even with low-quality quartz, just like your komandirskie, which is -4/+6 (as per COSC), drifts 1.2s/d.

In the low- and middle-end, it's a fact that quartz accuracy is not even in the same league as mechanical accuracy. At the high-end, mechanicals can be calibrated such that the average real life drift is a few seconds a month, which is very acceptable. I still think it's a waste, though.

I have a Khaki hand-winder, and while the date window is ugly, the rest of it is pretty nice. It's thin (8mm), light, and has a sapphire crystal. Cheap if you buy grey market, too (I got mine for $220).

One big mistake Swatch made was not making more of their dressy watches with the 2801 handwind movement instead of the 2824 auto. The Tissot Visodate is 11.6mm, which is ridiculous for a dress watch. If it weren't for the old milwatch style of the Hamilton Khaki mechanical, it'd be a better dress watch.

I love how mad people are getting over this.

It's a sub $200, diver rated, Sub Hulk homage with a ceramic bezel and a decent movement.
I'm not poor, so why the fuck not throw $200 to the wind to see if it's decent?

Pre-Swatch. Hamilton peaked in the 60s I think, later they had a weird few years and ended up moving from the US to Switzerland and became sort of generic and ended up getting swallowed up by Swatch.

Hamilton still makes some nice stuff. Moreso than Tissot, I'd say. Swatch was kind to them.

As usual, though, their "vintage" homages are nicer than their "contemporary" offerings.

I actually quite like the indices and the date window. They go well with the chunky, imposing look of the watch. The finishing is also better than just about anything you'll get from Seiko in the sub-$1000 price range.

But I have to agree with you on the chapter ring. The SARX015 did a better job.

The basic rule is that the heritage offerings of all the lower swatch brands are better than their regular ones. I can imagine the grinding of teeth at Omega when Longines brings out yet another reminder that historically they were the better brand.

With vintage hamilton there are a lot of scammers out there, especially on ebay. Run away from anything you see with a super colorful dial as they're pretty much all shitty reprints. As with any vintage make sure you do your homework and find something with an original dial at least, those account for most of the watch's value.

Jomashop has some decent deals if you're in the states.

Amazon Canada's black friday sale on watches is even worse. All they've done is take the fake swiss brands with their overinflated MSRPs (and subsequent Amazon "discounts") and posted them up.

"Hey, here's a ten dollar watch that we pretended was worth 400, and that we normally sell for thirty dollars. For this black friday, you can get it for the exclusive sales price of thirty dollars"

Best thing you can do is find a catalog of all the variants with pictures so you know exactly what to look for. Fakes come in varying quality but even the most convincing ones usually get some minor detail wrong. Otherwise be weary of anything that looks super pristine, this is after all going to be a 40+ year old watch and should at least sort of look like it. Lots of sellers try to pass off fakes or restored watches as NOS.

The balance wheel is replaced with a quartz oscillator. Quartz has a property called piezoelectricity which means that when the crystal is deformed it generates a current or when a current is applied the crystal deforms. A quartz crystal cut very precisely into a tuning fork shape has a voltage applied which causes it to vibrate at 32,768 Hz which is 2^15. A circuit counts up every single oscillation and divides by 2 16 times to bring it down to 1 tick per second. Then that signal is used to activate a motor which advances the geartrain which functions the same as a mechanical watch.
