I have the Google Play Edition M7, and aside from the disgusting purple camera, it still works wonderfully.
I have an m8 I just flashed a GPE 6.0 rom for and it is smooth as fuck.
Still rockin the m7 since march 2013. Except for the the ultra shitty camera, it's working great for me.

I've got a launch day M7 that I'm posting on now. I'm waiting for the M10 to upgrade. HTC will fix the camera if it turns purple on you. I just haven't done it. I'm running stock Sprint ROM which is pretty clean and plenty fast now.
I'm shitposting from it right now. Never did have the purple camera problem, but, even when the camera works, it's still shit. If you can look past that, it's the perfect sized phone, thin as hell, and fits in your front pocket perfect with the gentle curve on the back. Love this phone. I doubt there will be an HTC provided marshmallow update, and god help me if the screen breaks, or the battery goes bad.

Go for it. Love my M8. Got new. No need to upgrade for next few years. Camera is a bit downer though.

Camera blows. Never had a purple camera issue on my Verizon M7 that I had for two years now. The camera isn't pretty garbage for faraway pictures and the video lags in low lighting when recording with snapchat.
Everything else is good/great.

Then M8 is goat. Camera is OK. Just not the best. Music player is great. Performance is still like day one. Smooth. Also its getting marshmallow next month and it'll be good as any flagship out there.
