Only if updating through the terminal is fixed. It needs more of "matrix" theme. Just imagine how much pussy you could get after that is fixed.

Desktops are kill.

Year of the Linux Laptop perhaps.

2020 will be the year when Linux era starts.

It would take some sort of a major scandal involving Windows 10 telemetry (such as a data leak) to even potentially cause the year of the Linux desktop to happen.
>>
its going to be closer to 2020 than 2010. I still cant believe we're nearly in 2016, I wish time would fucking slow down.
>>
>>51536743
I doubt most people will care. Look at how much they care about facebook, google and amazon. Or for that matter cellphone companies. A majority of those companies just handing over information willingly to the government.
>>
2014 was the year of the Linux desktop. That was the first year where it was quicker and easier for me to get Linux set up right than Windows.

2016 is the only year it can happen.

If Valve cant get normies to even consider looking at Steam OS there is absolutely no hope of Linux ever growing.

Valve are the only company I can see out there that is willing to push the operating system. So far they are doing a terrible job of it and I cant see it taking off at all.
>>
The year draws closer every minute as only enthusiasts will use desktops instead of laptops or tablets. Most power users are not going to use Windows.

The most sold consumer devices are laptops, tablets, and phones. Remember there are more laptops shipped then desktops. Windows only controls about 14% of computers, with the most sold window devices being laptops.

That is why /g/ gets so many threads of annoying retards that want to spend 3k on a gaming laptop. That is also why Chromebooks made Microsoft's shit their pants for a entire year or two. Chromebook was a serious threat to Microsoft's diminishing market share.

We no longer in a Win/Intel, but in a ARM/Android world. Shills can only meme about Linux's desktop market share, because they are hiding how grim Window's future is.

I'm more interested in the future than the past. Old games may never be ported but it's the new games that people should focus on. SteamOS has just been done, really. I have no problem giving it some time.

I've been using windows since Win98, I grew up using it. But windows 10 is beyond the pale, I can't accept it. Support for Windows 7 will end at 2020. The end is near for me.

So I've resolved to learn Linux and completely stop using windows before the end of 2016.

Wish me luck.

Then what?
Other platforms get their year every year.
>>
no improvement will bring linux to the majority of desktops.

No matter how great it will be, the majority of people will not go through the effort of installing an OS themselves.

And if they have the mindset of "preconfigured" then linux will not be perfect for everyone.
But people can put up with mediocre operating systems.

So go ahead, update the login screen, add a new logo to the browser, make the installation easier, that stuff does not factor at all.
>>
If Ubuntu can avoid the terminal completely and get more popular programs then there is a chance
>>
>>51543798
i don't want there to be a chance for ubuntu
>>
>>51535730
Nah. I like and use Linux, but I'll fucking admit that it's not going to become a mainstream desktop OS unless MS fucks up so hard that they go out of business, and I don't see that happening in the next 10 years at least.
No Office hurts too. LibreOffice opens Office files about as well as any other alternative office suite, which is to say somewhat badly.

there's also little professional software for Linux for shit like video editing and there's nothing that actually matches Photoshop (I use GIMP routinely, sure, it's taken years for me to get remotely comfortable with it, and there's still shit that's just stupid about it, such as its awful layer handling) -- although you can get Photoshop working just fine with a little effort in Wine (namely, bypassing the installation process completely, making sure you have the standard selection of Windows fonts installed or the text tool will crash -- this happens on Windows machines too but isn't likely, etc)

>>51535955
Oh, sure you can.
Video driver performance is almost universally worse, though.
Most games don't have native Linux versions (if I opened up Steam for Linux right now and looked at my library a good 80% of my library is missing).
Wine also has its fair share of issues, even if it's actually at the point where I'll expect it to run most programs in some vaguely usable manner.

There's no real benefit at the moment to gaming on Linux.

Civ 5 runs better on my default ubuntu installation than it does on win 10
>>
>>51544003
Gee, maybe it's because there's an actual native version?

I prefer Civ 4, and got forbid if I want to install some mods, that breaks even more shit.

I'd suggest you Ubuntu or, if you're motivated, directly an installation on Archlinux. You should train to do this in a virtualbox.

Embrace the cloud goy, do your computing on our servers.
Sadly there is nothing we can do about it. in time every software will be a service.
>>
>no directx 12

haha no. SteamOS has already proven that the games ported to that other API has performance drops up the ass.

There will never be a year of the linux desktop as long as games run like crap on it.

Yes, games is all that it's about. Do you think windows would be popular if it weren't for all the great games on it back in the 90s?
>>
>>51535730
Why would you want it to be? Do you want the focus of Linux dev to be on catering towards Win/Macfags?
