Well?
Are desktops needed anymore?
What's your setup?
Will you change it in the near future?

Desktop + tablet
Laptops are dumb.

I would LOVE to have a killer laptop with good heat dissipation and that could be used as a complete desktop replacement. Believe me. The problem is that external GPU setups are not viable nor a standard yet. They're still bastardized solutions at best.
Laptop GPU's on the other hand are rather powerful, but the problem is that they DO get old and slow, and are not easy to change out for a newer one because of different socket types as well as price. Easily $700 for a gtx970m.
Until eGPUs have a standard communication port, or laptop gpus come WAY down in price, having a laptop that doesn't need replacing every 3 years would be impossible if you wanted to have it as a machine for every use.
I currently have a powerful desktop, mid-tier laptop, and a decent android tablet. They all have their uses.

For each his own, I guess. If you move around a lot or enjoy doing your computing outside, laptop is great. I you game, render, do other demanding things, there's no reasonably priced laptop what could replace a powerful desktop.
>Are desktops needed anymore?
Sure.
>What's your setup?
Desktop, soon to be replaced by a laptop because I lost interest in games.

+ a monitor or dock at home
Since I dont game any more, I dont see the need for a desktop anymore.
Even most "normal" modelling and simulation jobs can be easily done on a somewhat modern laptop.
I am using a C2D with 8GB of RAM from 2008 or something, and it is only now starting to sometimes hit its limits, mostly RAM, which I unfortunately maxed to what its mainboard is capable of handling.
