I think the N64 is a marvellous controller in that it is the least ergonomic design imaginable and yet it works.

To be desu that console was probably one of the most deranged clusterfucks that ever got somewhat popular. Advanced 3D hardware with great texture filtering? Let's limit texture size to 4 KB and kill the performance with overengineered microcode. CD quality audio support? Let's put the games on media that forces devs to ship like 8-bit 8 kHz voices because of space. Developers? We don't need developers, everyone will buy it because of Mario 64.

That controller was the least bizarre thing about it.

>>

Only retards hold the controller like that. Are you a retard?
>>
>>51529063
I hate this fucking meme.
Nobody asked you to hold it like that.
You put your left hand in the middle and your right hand in the right prong.
Almost no games used the D-pad.
>>
>>51530260
then what's the far left prong for?

I'm open to the argument that they designed it to be like two controllers in one - you can use the left and center or right and center - but that never came to fruition, and even if people had tried to make it so they'd be trying to design a game where you used a D-pad and control stick, but no buttons.

The controller was poorly designed. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call it *comically* poorly designed. Maybe over in /v/ it's more of a "meme", but this is a pretty measured evaluation of that controller.
>>
>>51530260
The D-pad made games like Mortal Kombat or Tony Hawks Pro Skater easier to play. There were few(if any) that exclusively used the D-Pad, but there were quite a few where the D-Pad was preferred over the joystick.
>>
>>51529660
Intel Wireless Series Gamepad Controller
Looks like a toilet seat
>>
>>51530319
given how many games the n64 ultimately had, there would need to have been something on the order of 10-20 really *excellent* games to justify a design as compromised as this.

And that's what this was - a compromised design, trying to satisfy two groups of people at once. That's not easy, and often blows up in your face, as the controller in OP's picture illustrates.

UNIX's "Do one thing and do it well" philosophy isn't born out of some arbitrary thought some neckbeards had; it was the evaluation from studying countless attempts to engineer all-encompassing software projects that tried to be something for everyone.

That's a fantastic design. If you use the analog stick you hold the center; If you use the d-pad you hold the left side. Would have made more sense if they came out with more d-pad games (or had backwards compatibility)

Despite this complaint, I'm going to drive manual until flappy paddles are standard or cars drive themselves, but clutch pedals are never far enough outboard since it must be sized for women to use. It makes perfect sense from a marketing standpoint. Apple wants everything they make to look ultra sleek all the time. If they allowed you to use the mouse while it was plugged in, then it would look less sleek to other people who see you using the plugged in mouse.

Style >>>>>>>>>>> Substance

>>
>>51532088
lol this answers nothing
you have to take your hand off the wheel to press anything in your pic, just like you have to take your hand off the joystick in my pic--which means you can no longer use the joystick.
>>
>>51532050
have you used one recently?
that cstick is fucking horrid
the triggers are retarded and require way more pressure and depth than anyone with sense would want
no l2, just a small ass z bumper above the right trigger

and the movement stick was also pretty shit. especially compared to the competition.

only thing good was the A button and the ability to mix it with any of the other buttons at the same time
>>
>>51529165
lol
>>
>>51532136
You are forgetting that at the time it was:
>gamecube
>playstation on-- two
>xbox - fat edition

As for the triggers, they actually had depth, rather than the PS2 ones, which were still buttons.
And for prolonged use, the Gamecube controller is the only one of its time that didn't cause physical pain.
>>
>>51532131
The point is, you rarely need to press any of those buttons in the car, when you do, you usually aren't turning.
I can't recall the left bumper thing on the 64 ever actually being used for anything in most games.

LT is for games that use the d-pad as the main navigation instead of Z.
This generally means LT is reserved for toggling a ui or some hidden gem

It probably wasn't intended to be used though.
Just like it would be retarded for the 'select' button to be used for major gameplay on the PS2 controller.
>>
>>51532291
But including a button with no intended use is still shitty design. You've proven my point yourself.

also, left bumper is a critical button in nearly every game outside of N64, yet select is never important regardless of console

>>
>>51532471
That post doesn't counter anything I said. The "left bumper" while you are using the analog stick is the z button at the bottom/back and is arguably more comfortable than reaching your finger up to hit a bumper on any controller. If a game was to use the digital pad, then the Z button wouldn't be used, and the actual left trigger would be used. This allows for comfortable grip on the controller and use of a left input button, regardless if the game calls for analog or digital input.

As far as I remember it was an awkward manouver.
But the thing was, it was an accessory button.

You used it like three times a year.
Without it though, you would have to fish through menus or use confusing button combos, but you couldn't map it to something like 'Jump'.

For something like 'change camera angle' or 'skip song' or the like, it doesn't matter if you need to move your hand to use it, but not having the button would be a greater disadvantage.

Doesn't it only take like 5min to charge fully?

I mean it's a 'bad' decision, but if it's just a 5min wait it's not too bad. I don't like the idea of putting style over usability, but it's not like you have to leave it that way for an hour.
>>
>>51536897
not him, but i keep hearing this about this and the pencil for the ipad. my first counterpoint is that these numbers quote charging up to 80% if i remember correctly. it's not a big deal, but forgetting that final 20% (which takes longer than the first 20%).

but i'll digress, because this isn't the core issue. the core issue actually makes the time to charge irrelevant; flipping the mouse upside down and having the cable come out the way it does is asking for something to catch it and - if caught at the wrong angle - snap off.

Apple used to have a clear vision about what was an unacceptable frustration for users, and then steve died, and now it seems that they don't really have a strong voice guiding design.

Pretty much every controller is butt fuckingly retarded.
They put the triggers below the bumpers, so you either have to move your fingers off the trigger to hit the bumpers, or use your middle fingers on the trigger.
Then there's the fact that you can't both be pressing face buttons while also using the right stick.
Controllers completely overload your thumbs while only using one, maybe two fingers on each hand.
