An array is just a special case of a matrix.

Think about matrices, and follow the rules of matrices instead those of numbers and you'll be fine.
(i.e., unlike numbers, not every matrix in invertible, commutativity generally doesn't apply, not all matrices can be multiplied together, there are divisors of zero, etc.).
