Just got my first set of Tai-Hao keycaps (Dolch, ALPS)
Shit's nice, not great though.
I'm thinking about getting myself a 55g Rubberdome for christmas, do you think that switch will fit somebody, who likes Matias QC, Cherry MX Green and hates MX Clears?

Ok, the barrier of entry is a bit high but it's still interesting. Oh wait...

>Centered legends on cylindrical caps
>Centered legends without enlarging the alphas
>Font choice more boring than Arial
Who the fuck designed and approved this?

It's going to fail. People will look back on it and not make any cool Topre keycap sets in the future. I love the colors and icon legends but fuck.
>>
>>51525135
Topre is getting mx sliders on their future boards, so who cares?
>>
>>51525188
True, we're going to see some pop up next year. It's probably for the best since that Cherry patent is long gone and it's already the de facto standard.

There are also rumors about a Topre board with analogue switches (like a gamepad) for more precise control and variable actuation point in software.

2016 might be a good year.

Daily reminder that there is no tangible difference (other than increased price) between Cherry and Kailh keys -- exact same specs.

I actually wanted to make my own keyboard, figured out that making one will cost around the same price as buying one.

>>

Frankly, it's taking me a little bit to get used to the size, since I've only been using full size keyboards for...well, decades, but I'm getting used to it pretty quick.
>>
>>51526108
i was thinking that was going to happen to me too if i got it. more particularly im concerned about the rearrangement of the nav keys and the shorter shift key.
>>
>>51526135
I only use L-shift while typing, so that doesn't bother me much, but the nav keys are very much like a laptop keyboard. If you've never had them there before, it's pretty quick to pick up.

It's the only one I can find that is TKL, white case/keys with cherry mx blue switches.
>>
>>51527094
its a nice board. i got a kul as my first and recently go my my little brother to get a cm rapid and i thought it felt great. was pretty cheap and didnt feel like a cheap piece of plastic. i was thinking of buying one and putting different switches and trying mods and shit on it just for kicks
>>
>>51527132
that's damn cheap for a keyboard with backlighting and (supposedly) genuine cherry switches.
>>

>>51527132

>Centered legends on cylindrical caps
You're gonna have to explain this one to me.
>>
>>51528142
It refers to the shape of the top of the keycap. Modern caps curve inwards in the shape of a cylinder while old style caps are more spherical.

Centered text legends are more fitting on retro type sets with a spherical top and big legends because it's a part of that retro feeling.
>>
>>51528413
>It refers to the shape of the top of the keycap. Modern caps curve inwards in the shape of a cylinder while old style caps are more spherical.
Perhaps I should have been more specific.

>Centered text legends are more fitting on retro type sets with a spherical top and big legends because it's a part of that retro feeling.
Sure, but why are they a negative on cylindrical?

>>
Gonna retire my QPAD MK-85 with brown switches and looking for a replacement.

It's between the Filco m2, Topre realforce and Code (as by buyers guide).

I find myself loving to type a lot on my thinkpad x230 lately, will the topre be kind of like a mix between a mechanical and that (while still allowing to be used for high level moba gaming)?
>>
>>51529460
Pretty sure you can use whatever you like for "high-level moba gaming".

The key travel on any of those boards will not be equivalent to your memepad, though the RF will be the closest approximation of the tactility.
>>
>>51529492
The key travel is dreadful. If RF offers the same feel with less, I'll order one straight away.
>>
Hi! I have just seen the Ducky Shine 4 White (with blue switches) in sale for 115€. I really prefer the black one, but it's out of stock. Should I take it either way?
I need advice...
>>
>>51529589
It has more total travel, but the actuation point might be a little sooner.
But really, for "high level moba gaming", you could get away with any shitty keyboard since the only thing that it really calls for is fast double-tapping maybe.
>>
>>51529589
Like, you want less key travel than your scissor switch keyboard? That ain't happening.
>>
>>51529630
The thing that bothers me is the varying weight of the keys, as q will be heavier than ex. e.
>>
>>51530080
On the thinkpad?
>>
Help me out. I had a nice 110$~ modern keyboard with cherry browns and recently got ahold of a model M and fixed the springs. The model M works perfectly, and is from 1991 so it is manufactured by IBM, however I'm split on which one to keep and which one to sell. I mostly only use my keyboard for typing.
>>
>>51530931
Is there a reason to sell one?
>>
>>51531030
Other than the money I guess not, but I'm still split on which one to use
>>
>>51531182
Flip between them every few days and you'll eventually be able to make a decision. We can't know what you like.
>>
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XKUN4WS
Thoughts on this deal? Worth it?
>>
>>51531226
You may be paying a premium for a "gaymen" board, but overall seems like a good deal for a decent-looking keyboard as long as you like browns.
>>
>>51531226
>Cherry MX Brown
If you like that sort of thing. I won't judge (much).

>Silkscreened Keycaps
Translation: shit

>a Gold metal plate
A gold-coloured mounting plate? Tacky.

>aluminum coating
What, like an aluminium skin? Looks alright, but it's not like it'll be as nice as a full Al case.

>Fullsize
I'm going to really judge on this one.

Also, looks like a standard ANSI125 layout, which is surprising, I guess.

Verdict: why bother?
>>
>>51531351
None of that is really bad, you're just picking hairs. Sure, gold switches are tacky as shit, but having them doesn't take anything away from the board itself. Keep in mind it's at 100$ here.
That being said I wouldn't support the purchase becsuse I don't recognize the brand to make good keyboards.
>>
>>51531763
My verdict wasn't "you might as well type on LITERAL FECES", it was "why bother?"

As in, what is the actual benefit in owning such a board?

After posting here and searching exhaustively, my efforts to find an aftermarket case for a CODE 87/WASD v2 seem to be in vain. The only thing I can turn up is the MK aluminum cases, and those have been out of stock forever. I emailed the Winkeyless guy and he confirmed his cases won't fit the WASD PCB. Am I just out of luck?

>>
>>51534956

You could try getting one made.

Probably a little pricey, but may be able to set up a GB or something.
>>
>>51535035
The thought crossed my mind, because I really like the looks of these cases:

but the GB is long over, and the guy who made them hasn't responded to my PM asking about the possibility of more being made. I know with certainty that cases meant to fit Filco boards also fit the CODE/WASD v2 PCB.
>>
>>51535079

If you got your hands on the files or dimensions for the layered acrylic, you could easily get one made.

- an IBM model M
- cherry rackable board from 1985 (Blacks)
- a Filco Majestouch 2 (Blues)

That's 5 in total. I'm on the verge of building a 6th one.

>>51536920
m8 reread the entry

They're bundling a spare set of 120 gateron switches along with the keyboard, itself having knockoff "Outemu" blues, that's why it's so expensive

Since assdrop is still taking their time processing the gateron switch drop from last month, I might as well get the standalone keyboard for cheap off taobao since I won't need the extra switches.

Yeah I saw that once I got a bit less excited.

Looking forward to this baby, especially since I had actually wanted to get my hands on some gaterons but wasn't able to in the last drop.
>>
>>51536920

Chinese board adds up to $60 with shipping, and it is missing the gateron switches (and extra $30-40) this one has.
>>
>>51537015
Honestly, it's probably still cheaper to get a middleman to buy the board and switches separately on taobao which will take a couple weeks tops rather than lagdrop which loves to take months to liaise with vendors.

Also, in that taobao link you can order the keyboard with stock gateron red/blue/brown/black instead of literal who cherry clones which you'll probably swap out. Just read some english taobao buying guides (/a/ and /cgl/ happen to have those) and choose a reputable middleman
>>
>>51536856

Order a custom Filco, much simpler logo.

>>
Does adding o-rings destroy the typing experience? I want to reduce the sound of the board, but not at the cost of performance.
>>
>>51536977
The switch on the pic has a little cut to the housing to fit the SMD led. Massdrop will need a custom gateron to fit this board, as their regular housing has no place for the led.

It kind of kills the proposal of the hot-swaping thing, as you cant really find replacement switches easly. Maybe cherry RGB switches will fit, it has a tiny space for a smd led, but the positioning has to be checked.

btw, you can get it cheaper here, free shipping. No gaterons replacements tho.

ey boss, I plan on ordering an assembled ergodox one from falbatech this week.

which switches are you using, and are you happy with them? I'm thinking cherry brown, greetech brown or greetech red. They also have gateron clears.

>>
>>51545177
It's a middle ground that nobody wants.
Games want the reds / blacks. Typists (especially coders / writers) want the blues or topres. I don't think anybody really hates them, but hardly anybody wants them.

Speaking of cherry, anybody know anything about the MX Silents? I found a great deal on the corsair strafe RBG with them in it so I'm quite curious if anybody here has it.
>>
>>51545177
Because they don't do anything particularly well.
They feel like a linear with an imperfection that causes a minor bump in the middle of the travel. They're barely tactile compared to actual tactile switches. Not to mention the tactility is contained entirely within about 1mm leading up to the actuation point.
And unlike blues/greens which have the same thing, they don't feel nice and crisp like a blue.

Welp I got the G710+ from Logitech at half off. I'm still getting used to key placement and coming from rubber domes these cherry browns feel really nice. The back light is a simple white and can be turned off. Gonna give it a trial run for a while since I have until Jan to take it back.
For $70 (half off) + a 55 dollar gift card I feel like it would be hard to do much better for the money.

Very Happy. Closest I have found to mye beloved buckling springs. The solid click and high resistance hey have also keeps me from bottoming out.

>I need the least straining switch as possible for typan.

>Also, how hard is it to get used to not moving hands around?

Took me about a week to get used to it, but I was doing on on blank keys on a completely different layout. My new custom layout makes a lot more sense. If you notice the columns are not staggered like most keyboards, they are straight.

>I don't have a part of my middle finger so I'm used to compensate with both hands.

It will definately take you a few days to get used to it if thats the case. Shouldn't be too hard though.

While using the ergodox I learned that my touchtyping isn't actually correct. I move my right hand toc cover a lot more of the board than I should. I only use the pointer and birdie finger to type on my right.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with gaymen on blues. There are only two things you need to take note of: the sound, and the fact that the reset point being slightly higher than the actuation point.

Get o-rings to dampen some of the sound. As for the latter, unless you're a professional double tapper, there's nothing to be worried about.

Anything with cherry mx switches should do you fine. Though given how you treat your keyboards, I'm guessing that you'd even break those far before the end of their expected lifespan.
>>
>>51560557
I just happen to click A and S a lot due to the vidya gayme. I'll look for Cherry MX switch mech-kb.

Can they be replaced if they break down?
>>
>>51560586
Yes, they can be replaced with miniscule amount of soldering. That's one of the bonuses of mechanical keyboards.

You may want to get in on this drop here. You can literally hotswap the switches. Though I don't know anything about the build quality of the keyboard itself.

Will those be a decent replacement to my shiny WASD ABS printed keys? They are double shot ABS so in theory they shouldn't fade, but I'm not really sure why people complain about a key being "thin" though. Any advice? If you suggest alternatives, I live in Canada so some sites are a no-go.

I finally got my hands on a switch tester, although without keycaps.

My thoughts:

Brown:
Gateron > Cherry > Greetech
The Gateron feels a bit nicer than Cherry, it's also lighter than Cherry. Greetech is meh.

Blue:
Gateron > Cherry > Greetech
The Gateron and Cheery feels similar, but the Gateron has a more satisfying click, it feels/sounds almost as if it had a spring

Cherry Green:
It's a slightly harder to click Cherry Blue. I like Gateron Blue more.

Cherry Clear:
Trash, feels like a toy.

Cherry Black:
Complete trash, worse than your dad's greasy keyboard. I doubt it's even good for FPS like people say, Red feels much better.

Greetech Red:
It's alright.

Gateron Clear:
Very surprised here, it's super light to press (35g vs 45g red), completely silent and it feels good. I like it a lot.

In conclusion, the switches that have the mechanical keyboard feel and sound are Blue and Green switches.

I used to play a lot of CS 1.6 and other FPS games, and in my opinion all the Gateron Clear and any Red switch would feel good, but also the Brows switches are so easy to press and the actuation point isn't noticeable, so they would work just as good.

The Blue and Green switches however I would not recommend for FPS. Peaking corners would definitely be annoying.

Since I don't have any keycaps to test, my question would be which is better for all day long typing sessions, Gateron Clear, Gateron Blue or a Brown switch? I have carpal tunnel, considering an Ergodox.

Never bought a mechanical keyboard before. Is this one any good?

Also thinking of getting this

Had an OCK-84 before with White Alps clone switches, clickiest thing ever.. it was such a shame some of the keys stopped registering. Had to sell that beauty on Ebay and get some cash for it, from there I picked a second hand Corsair K90 from a friend which was absolute dog-shit. Currently rocking a Cooler Master Rapid-I with browns, pretty happy with it.

Is this a good buy?

https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=285

I just wanted to give it as a gift to someone else who has never used a mechanical keyboard before and will use it for typing/gaming, being typing the main activity.

Im mostly looking for cherry and a backlighted keyboard, and as far as I understood from the FAQ it should use cherry brown(yes I know that keyboard has cherry red, but I can't find both things at the same time under that price)

PD: I live in Spain btw...
>>
>>51561386
It's an entry level keyboard, but a good one. Go right ahead.
>>
>>51561139
Never heard of that brand of keyboard. Check the pastebin for recommended brands.

The hard drive should be fine, I'm not sure how the quality has changed but I have a Hitachi HDD that is 8.7 years old and still works (160gb and so old that it has SATA and IDE connectors).
>>
>>51560696
Can anyone help with this?
>>
>>51561593
Besides them looking like dogshit. Its your standard pbt keycap.
Thicker wider keys= stronger sturdier keys
>>
>>51561769
They're ABS though.

And that looks like a horrible doubleshot job. But they do seem decent for the price.
>>
>>51560696
>>51561593
They're alright but I would look for either thicker plastic (made by something like GMK, BSP, Gateron or Vortex) or PBT plastic.

It's tough to give any specific recommendations without knowing what kind of look you're after.
>>
>>51561807
fuck that shit then.No sense buying keycaps if you're going to get abs replaced with more shitty abs
I checked canadia amazon and got nothing. But check http://www.amazon.com/Vortex-Black-Doubleshot-backlit-Keycaps-PC/dp/B00XABAR2M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1448661872&sr=8-2&keywords=vortex+doubleshot+pbt

>Vortex Doubleshot PBT+POM translucent keycaps

I'm typing on those right now, very nice keycaps.
>>
>>51561807
By horrible doubleshot job you mean underneath the keys? They do look a bit messy.

>>51561911
I just want a simple hopefully monochromatic set of keycaps that won't have the letters rub off.

I have no clue what the thickness or quality of the keycap will do. I haven't had issues with keycaps in the past, do thinner keycaps tend to literally break apart? The only keycaps I have tried are the shitty WASD keyboard ABS ones which I'm looking to replace, and the Razer Black Widow 2013 non-backlit keys. Those keys have had the white letters fade, but they haven't rubbed off.

>>51561921
Thanks, I'll take a look around at retailers to see if they seem reputable and ship those kinds of keycaps. I read the FAQ so I know what brands to look for, the only issue is I don't want to pay a ton of money for keycaps if I can avoid it (and the poor Canada availability).

>>51559715
You can check out the Round 5a prices on Desthority for reference.

>you mean underneath the keys
That, and the legends. The legends look a bit messy.
>>
How are greens? I'm mainly a rhythm game player.
Will they tire me on the long run since they're heavier, or are they manageable for very fast/long keyboard smashing sessions?
>>
>>51562420
greens are meme

Apparently Max Keyboard do PBT now, and it's pretty cheap too even with side printing (which obviously doesn't wear out):

>>
>>51562457
not him but red or blacks then?
>>
>>51562603
Black if you want more force to push the key
Reds if you want less force to push the key
If you want a quieter key get some o-rings.
I like 70A 2mm on reds, it makes it smoother and half the sound is goneish
>>
>>51562603
All Cherry MX switches are memes.

>I want clicky
Bucking spring

>I want tactile
Topre

>I want linear
Gateron Red (less gritty)
>>
>>51562528
Yeah it's cheap but unfortunately the shipping is 50$, 2x more expensive than the keycaps. This is for 7 day shipping too.
>>
>>51562737
Haven't visited mkg in awhile. wtf is a Gateron are they the new kahlils?

>>51562796
High quality MX clones that are smoother than the real ones.

>>51562829 fuck off cherry shill
>>
>>51562873
do they have the same durability as cherrys? I had a totally a real filco™ with "yellow" Kahlils from china ebay. Last a couple years before switches started dying.
>>
>>51563008
Nobody knows yet, they haven't been around long enough to tell.
But generally they seem to be of reasonably good value, they don't seem to be experiencing the broken stem issues of Kailhs.
