Is Google Apps worth paying for?

Their cheapest plan is $50 a year, which is not a crazy amount.

But what are the actual advantages for those that don't own a business?

The Google site sucks ass at telling the customer why this is worth paying for.

Do you like the service they provide?

Would it be worth $50 a year?

Do you get more storage? more stability? better integration with other services? What?

I actually have it only to use Gmail with custom domains. Other than that, it's the same as @gmail accounts.

Doesn't The Verge use Google Apps? A lot of schools do to.

It would be useful if you have a small business

no, you can get customized email for like 1$ per gb, you can make your own cloud server for like 10 more $

I got a free 100-person account in like 2009.

I think you can still get a free one-person account by signing up for whatever google calls their AWS-competitor cloud-hosting service.
