It's not an outright scam, it's just way overhyped. It's been possible to do this kind of thing with fast flash drives for years.

Not really, they claim it becomes used as RAM while ReadyBoost puts some data on the USB so that it can be loaded faster than off a HDD.
It's basically shit though.

That's just slower swap space.
Accessing files from swap is much slower than accessing them from RAM.
Swap only exists so that if you still up your RAM you can cache files to your hdd and avoid your system completely locking up.
You can imagine why ms included readyboost with vista.
