Means your GPU driver is set to use old TV color output range of ~35-252 instead of the proper PC color range of 0-255. Fix your GPU settings and VLC will produce proper color. Or, switch VLC to an output mode that isn't affected by your wrong setting, for instance software rendering or 3D rather than overlay.

What settings do you mean? Video output looks identical between them. If you mean the GUI, it's subjective but MPC-HC (intentionally) looks like something from 1998, and MPV is like "what GUI?", though its in-video controls are prettier and more Mac-like.

Yes, MPC-HC is quite nice, though it relies on the Windows audio subsystem more and thus you end up with messes like codecs, filters, splitters, etc. I use MPC-HC and VLC together to handle more formats total.

The main point isn't that it's bad per se; it's that other media players are much better, and you have to be an idiot to know that and still actively choose the worse option.

Biggest problem with VLC is tearing. Not sure if it's been fixed, but I was told it was unfixable due to VLC architecture.
It's not, you're just falling for /g/'s shilling. It works very well out of the box and doesn't have any problems unless you specifically go looking for them.
That said, I use VLC, smplayer and mpc, switching around from time to time.
