Try "AppComparison" Android app by Microsoft. It will tell you similar apps. Some of the "comparable" apps are bullshit, but you can see what you'll be missing/having if you switched.
Oh, and ignore the "categories" prompt at the beginning. It has no bearing on the apps it shows, but just the "suggested apps" tabs that you can ignore. Just pick any two categories at random

I've had a Samsung Galaxy S4 & 5, and iPhone 5s and 6, iPod touch when it first came out, got a Windows 7 laptop, windows 8.1 tablet, and my big gaming rig is Windows 10 now, got Mint, Fedora and Ubuntu on Virtual Box I use to practice server based shit, currently fucking around using Ubuntu for Redmine server. I like to try new technology. SO I wouldn't call my a WS Fanboy. I've used a bit of everything. Honestly, it just intrigues me. I also am not particularly fond of Android or iOS aesthetics. I've seen some Windows phones and I kinda dig it. Don't use a lot of apps, don't have a facebook or snapchat or instagram or twitter or any of that shit. Don't play videogames on a phone, cause that shits ridiculous, don't use spotify or pandora or that shit, I have my own music library. Got a free 1tb of OneDrive storage from MS for some reason I can't recall, so I uploaded my entire music library up there for shits and giggles. Really enjoy Groove Music on my PC, works like a charm with my music library in OneDrive. I do use Google Drive and do enjoy Google Photos, that is the only thing really bumming me out. Basically want to try a new phone.

Can't speak for WP, but as of yet, there are no extensions/plug-ins available for Edge. I use it on Windows 10 desktop and honestly, have found very little wrong with it. I've used IE on WP and have never been re-directed, also encountered very few to no pop-ups. Varies on website of course.

So I like the idea of having a "dumb" docking station at home and at the office, and hopefully a compatible one if need be at a friend's house, and having the main part, memory, processor, storage, with me.

ARM means its Windows without application support, which means its Windows without its only advantage. Any Linux distribution would be a more "full-fledged"pocket sized system on that hardware and much more useful to me personally, cause most of the Linux packages I need work on ARM.

Which is a pipe dream, cause you wouldn't use this thing at home where you have a more powerful machine, or in a train/meeting room where you don't have a docking station at all. The whole concept seems unnecessary considering the fact that internet connections are so fast that you can sync your files/settings to all of your workstations and get the same work environment everywhere despite the actual hardware.
Ironically, Microsoft itself is pushing the cloud heavily nowadays, which is the complete opposite strategy that is pursued with this device. "Cloud" means that the environment provides you with all your work environment no matter where you are, which makes devices like that unnecessary. It seems like Microsoft doesn't have any clue where it wants to go and they just keep trying random stuff.

If you are talking about the tablets Microsoft used to release 15 years ago: The iPhone and the iPad were successful, cause Apple released the right product at the right time. They had the whole concept of the app-stores, a UI that works without a stylus which made those things good in the first place. Microsoft failed because they release the wrong product at a time where the hardware wasn't ready, and literally just sold desktop Windows with "touch".

Yes really. It lacks a lot of functionality and the "app ecosystem" is more like a barren wasteland.
Last time I checked Windows Phone 8.1 could not even charge while the phone was off. HTC modified their phones to support it but phones like the Lumia series had to be powered on to charge.
That's not the only thing missing either. No manual configuration of network settings. So if you don't like using DHCP you are shit out of luck. Want to attach a file to an email? Sorry but you can't do that. Only photos, videos and Microsoft Office documents are allowed.

Groove in my opinion works great. The aesthetic and design is fucking nice, and it syncs my OneDrive music library flawlessly between my PC, and I had the Groove Music app on my iPhone 6 as my primary music player. Also picks up all my bootleg music and gives it correct track name and numbers, artist details and album art, I was very surprised.
OP here. Only think making me hesitate is the price on this thing. I'd have to agree, its fucking high, its like Apple price high. Again the whole app barren wasteland analogy is complete bullshit. I don't know why people spew this. Yes it does not compete in numbers when it comes to amount of apps for android and iOS, but again, same logical argument, I do not require nor care for all those apps. The only apps I will truly miss are Google Drive and Google Photos, but I know there is a 3rd party Google Drive app that isn't half bad. Everything else can be accessed through a web-browser if I'm desperate. My buddy has had a Lumia 1520 for over a year and the only problem he had was his 64GB SD card failed on him, once he took it out of the phone, and put in a new one it worked fine once again. Haven't seen any lags or anything of that sort. The photo upload to OneDrive is also insanely fast, literally as a photo is taken its on his OneDrive 5 seconds later.

The Maps app uses Bing maps, which is shit compared to Google Maps. It also crashes in me constantly, when it doesn't crash it gives wrong directions for transit.
Here Maps is only pre-installed on Nokia phones and can't even be installed from the store anymore. It also has shitty directions, and transit is non-existent for my city.

It's taking off, definitely starting with the working poor from the $29 532, but this is introducing whole generations to the idea that a phone can be good and cheap, and getting them hooked on the WP. WP is so easy to use and practical, Android and IOS just kind of dump everything to the "desktop", WP has a proper home-screen that works really well in practice. There are some niggles, options under settings are placed randomly, not in alphabetical order, WHY??!?! but it's a premium phone at a budget price, and it's catching on one family at a time.
I got one, i convinced my dad to get one and he loves it, i got my mum one when hers was stolen by a gypsy in France, my brother uses one for work because the whole office is using Windows Phones and Tablets. When one person gets one, the rest of the family gets converted like a virus. Also, fucking hell my friends paid 800-500 for their phones, and they get a new one every two years at least because android never gets updated even for 800 dollarydoo phones. fuck that shit.

sure, but what does one thing have to do with the other? my point was that Microsoft didn't know how to price their smartphones correctly and think they can afford to charge a premium on some of their smartphones (another good example would be the Lumia 830) when its actually quite the opposite. I don't see the relevance of it being a flagship or not in this case.
