I have a large assortment of usb hard drives and flash drives in both USB 2.0 and 3.0 and notice no difference in transfer rates between any of them

I use that exact one with my modded wii. I'd use 3.0 for modern devices though.
The thing about storage is that it's important to spend the extra money for better quality. For example, don't choose some no-name brand for your flash drives or hard drives. I always spend the extra (if there is an extra) for brands like SanDisk instead of like PNY for flash drives and Western Digital instead of like Toshiba for hard drives.
