Okay, I think I've got my theming as automated as I want it to be.

I define the file to use as my wallpaper in a config file somewhere. On startup, X runs a small utility to set the root window's background to that image. All of the suckless programs I use include a common header file in their config.h, which defines constants that I use in multiple config.hs (like the colors, the font, etc).

I also have a function in my .bashrc which reads the wallpaper config file and generates a color scheme from the image, using a small program I wrote, and formats the output to fit my suckless header file.

So changing the wallpaper and re-theming basically takes 4 steps: edit the wallpaper config file, run the function, copy its output to the suckless header file, and rebuild each of the suckless programs. Then I restart X and the new colorscheme is applied.

>>
>>51446463
if you change the wallpaper, a script which is run automatically should detect that the config file has changed, generate the color scheme, replace the last one in your header file, and replace the current xresources.

One step. One step. You don't even have to do anything advances. Just delete lines a-b and insert the new content with sed (n)r.

>restart X

Don't have to. Launch a persistent process with x, like a shell script that sleeps forever as a job, waits on that job, and saves the pid of that job somewhere for an easy kill. Only restart your WM and re-run xrdb.

I have to manually determine the highlight color. It sort of depends on the image, and isn't just the most frequent color (for instance, in the Yamadera photo, the highlight color is yellow even though green and blue are much more common).

>Just delete lines a-b and insert the new content with sed (n)r.
It would be simpler to just split the header file into the color definitions and the rest of the definitions and concatenate them into the actual header file. But since choosing a highlight color requires manual intervention anyways, it's not really worth the extra complexity.

>Launch a persistent process with x, like a shell script that sleeps forever as a job, waits on that job, and saves the pid of that job somewhere for an easy kill
Cool, I've never thought of this.

rxvt isn't that terribly bloated. but it is mostly complete, which a terminal emulator has to be. Because it's an emulator. And xterm compliance is inescapable. You could always go full rob pike and swear off anything that won't work in acme.

Also, not all X applications are terminals. It would be suckless-y to define your WM's colors and so on in .xresources using raw xlib, if sucking less does not mean "making basic configuration obscure to fuck with newbie ricers" to you.

You're right, but my system is sort of a minimalism circlejerk, in case you couldn't tell :)

I don't think the config header model is "deliberately obscure"; it's non-standard but makes sense, and in my case, simplifies configuration by a lot (since I can have a single header for X programs (dwm, st, slock) and GTK programs (surf) without having to translate color schemes into multiple config formats).
>>
>>51447814
The xresources method has the same advantage, but maybe suckless thinks it's an abomination for X to even have that feature.

What about bands that release their stuff on bandcamp? Also those small record labels are really cool and I want to support them. Hell, some bands make their own record labels. Just google bblean skins dude. It's that easy.
bblean should also come with bbstylemaker if you don't want to edit your stuff by text. Make sure to run it as shell and not over explorer also. Also, I think by default bblean uses its own window decorations, that might cause problems with some programs. Honestly it's been 4 years since I did anything with bblean so my memory is fuzzy at best.

Why would I use an amateur's project like blackbox over something developed by a multi-billion dollar company that ran usability tests and did actual research on what is best?
>>
>>51449800
Personal preference I guess. I really like *box type window managers. The only think I miss is the search on the start menu, but launchy took care of that.
>>
>>51449816
but they barely manage your windows
they let you shade and provide virtual desktops but what do they really add managementwise that can't already just be done with a simple ahk script?
>>
>>51449830
You're right, blackbox doesn't give you any advantage over regular explorer. But you don't really lose and functionality ether. I just like the way it feels and looks, like I said, it's all preference. I don't even use virtual desktops myself.

>>

Sometimes its easier to hit alt+space and type a programs name than go into my programs section on my menu and find it there.
>>51450047

>>
>>51449932
Why you use bblean if you are using launchy that can open stuff for you. You just hit shortcut + name and boom you got it. Making clicking and looking in your bblean menu stupid.

Who cares though 90% of these people rice their shit to the point it's retarded.

>>
>>51450049
What >>51450083 is saying is that it's ridiculous that you have a way to search for your stuff instantly through shortcuts, yet you rely on bblean and claim that the reason why you have it is because of it's menu, but in reality he's calling you out because your cutting half bbleans forte (aka the menu boxes you use to put your shortcuts) for a program that just opens the shortcuts for you using keybinds and typing a few words.

Hope you understand this no bully version.
>>
>>51450127
But the menus can be used for more than launching applications. You can generate them on the fly, so you could theoretically put shit like your CPU usage and RAM usage in a menu.

I used to do this with openbox (which allows you to actually pipe it straight in instead of using intermediate files but the concept would be the same)
>>
>>51450105
bro calm down, yeah the guy might be a bit stupid but people implement/use shit that is not efficient for them just because they look nice

its like people who buy jordans but cant play basketball, i dont get them cuz im a pro but because i like how they look (not that i like jordans but thats an example)
>>
>>51450066

I said menu and bar. I like the bbleanbar a lot. I didn't start using launchy until a few months ago, so for years the menu was what I used primary.

For the programs I use the most i find that its easier to just open them in my menu since I can have them on my main menu page instead of the programs page of my menu. I also really like how all the control panel stuff is in my menu.

Get a better font for the bbLean menu. Do yourself a favor, blow that screenshot WAY WAY up so you can look at the letters in the menu. Look at the letter l for example, it's hideous.

Just went back to Linux and it's my first time with XFCE..

I applied some nice themes, but what's the easiest way to get a very minimalistic ambience/dark look with white text?

I cannot find themes for that..

Oh, it's not like I'm the ONLY glorious Arch Linux™ user in this thread! There are quite a few of us here. You can tell because we have an awesome ASCII logo in our terminal during screenshots! But that's not all we use the terminal for - we all know it's a very powerful tool, so sometimes we use it to edit /etc/rc.conf in nano, or even for package management! Keeping terminal windows open during screenshots is very important. It reminds the viewer that we know what we're doing. Which should be a given, because after all, we use Arch Linux™!
