>>51437889
>because men don't like wifi when real connections are available
Huh.
I'm trying to get a PCI wifi card because I've got to admit it,it's pretty much easier having a computer in another room connected wirelessly than having to go through a lot of wiring up lots of meters of LAN cable.
Can't argue at gigabit connection. I'd get a MSI K9N SLi (AM2) just for the fact it has 2 LAN ports, and both NIC chips controlling them are gigabit.
>>51437721
Doesn't matter, just upload it.
>>51437952
>having to go through a lot of wiring up lots of meters of LAN cable.
Anon...
It does depend on how your house is wired but try out something like these:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/netgear-powerline-1200-gigabit-ethernet-adapters-2-pack-white/4002029.p?id=1219639902674&skuId=4002029
That's the exact product I use. My router is upstairs and I'm in the basement and it's really nice to not have to run wire since it's my parents' house and all
>>51437952
It'd be a good idea to drill a hole in your wall and run a cord through your house to your other room, rather than wifi, you'll have way better speeds. If you can get under your house, and you aren't afraid of spooky spiders, drill a hole through your floor next to your router, and another one where your comp is.
If your room is upstairs, then I'd just get a wireless card. That's my situation. :/
Napisz co było dalej. Przyjechała policja, karetka ?
>>51438013
>http://www.bestbuy.com/site/netgear-powerline-1200-gigabit-ethernet-adapters-2-pack-white/4002029.p?id=1219639902674&skuId=4002029
Pretty much why would I do that?
First of all,it's not that much of a distance (it's two rooms separated by a very small corridor where the closet is also located) but I don't have any cables that long to wire, and also no space to route them (I already have a TV cable going through a TV in the other room and it's very thick).
Using a wifi PCI card (or one of ASUS' wifi card gizmos they sold with the P4P800-E Deluxe for example) yields a much easier solution,as my router is exactly a few meters away (3-5 meters),and the signal strenght is excellent anywhere in the house. (the router is a Tenda W306R with about 500m operating range)
>>51438102
>If your room is upstairs
My room is close to the room in which the router resides.
>>51438134
>Pretty much why would I do that?
It's faster than wifi bro, plus you honestly lose /g/ points if you're on wifi outside your laptop.
>>51438134
Then go for it, shouldn't be an issue.
>>51438146
>It's faster than wifi bro,
Ayy,my wifi is pretty fast, but that's because I've got 100Mbps going into the router. I'm thinking of going with fiber internet, which is fast as fuck here.
>lose /g/ points if you're on wifi outside your laptop.
I could care less about the points than about my internet quality. Nevertheless, wifi has always been fast at my place. Quite on par with gigabit ethernet, but a little bit slower. My ISP gives better internet than other ISPs in my country.

>>51438264
I hate Ubuntu. I immediately lose respect for anyone who runs it, and especially those who advocate it. Here’s why:
Name 20 features, release-for-release or year-for-year that have not come from Redhat. Redhat basically runs the show when it comes to Linux. This includes things like NetworkManager, Gnome, Xorg, GCC, glibc, LVM, KVM, kernel, file systems et al. Redhat has developers making significant contributions to the entire FOSS software stack upstream.
Ubuntu on the other hand pulls most of the heavy weight packaging from Debian with each release. They then perform minor patching and testing. It generally lags behind Fedora by a release or two in parts of the software stack. I never see @ubuntu or @cannocial email addresses in upstream changelogs.
So tell me again, how exactly does Ubuntu innovate? They even struggle to release a new theme with each release, and artwork is about the only original thing in Ubuntu.
Yes, Ubuntu is stable because they are standing on the shoulders of giants. Most of the hard work is hashed out before they ever import software into their repositories. This is fine, and what FOSS is all about, but I prefer to be in with the leaders rather than the followers.
What really irks me and what has really brewed my hatred are Ubuntu users. They seem to think Ubuntu is responsible for all that is good in the FOSS world. I have just proven how false this is. In my experience, Ubuntu support mechanisms (IRC, mailing lists, forums) are much less helpful than the alternative.
If you want a nice desktop distro, run Fedora or OpenSUSE. If you like control, run Gentoo. If you need stability, run RHEL/CentOS or Debian. But please, don’t feed the idiot magnet that is Ubuntu!

gentoo, like OS X, is a colossal waste of time with desktop-use "benefits" that are better in 4chan posts than reality. except it doesn't support microsoft office and, like all linux distros, eats through battery more than any other OS except on a select few chromebooks and painfully outdated and poorly built chinese business notebooks.
portage is useful if you're running a server or building your own distro and need to seamlessly apply your own patch sets, but on a laptop it's overkill.

No. It isn't. (BTW. Chrome OS is Gentoo based)
I moved to Gentoo and dont wanna try anything else. It's very customizable. Battery usage depends on kernel and software compile-time and run-time configurations - how much it uses hardware resources and available energy saving hardware features. The main disadvantage is time taken by compilers when you install lot of software at once but it's a price for flexibility.

an OS should not change its behaviour without being told to by the user. an OS that goes behind your back and behaves in unexpected ways without even making it easy to create the default behaviour (like a simple "always open new folders in the current window" option) is not user friendly, and if you revert to 1990s behaviour instead of maintaining the behaviour everyone is used to, it's not intuitive.
OS X is like what people think linux is like. a bunch of developers up in their stainless steel tower lord over you with terrible defaults they personally prefer and tell you to write scripts and use the terminal if you don't like it, but you "should" like it because it's a "better workflow" in their opinion.
>>51441681
yeah it pretty much is, unless you're more autistic than me and get mad at unused dependencies. chrome OS is an example of what gentoo is good for.
>battery usage depends on kernel and software config
no, it depends on whether or not the kernel supports your platform's PM features well and if there is software available that better exposes features like fan control. or you could write it yourself. that is always very practical.
even after you tweak it to apparent perfection, real world runtime is an hour or two below OS estimates, and the real world runtime you'd get out of windows.

keke. by and large, it's the most intuitive. it changed one fucking thing because you set the layout to the layout that's being displayed when you're opening a write-only partition. i'm sure there's a checkbox somewhere you can un-tick or similar. i'm also sure it would take half the effort it would take on windows or linux.
do you realise you can't even customise most file explorers like that on windows and loonix? show/hide individual GUI elements? and you can do that in almost every OSX (tm) program. that's freedom m8

Look at Linux Foundation members and grep to kernel sources for ".*Intel.*(c).*" or "Google" or so. Most of hardware is supported in modern kernel. Look at Kernel's menuconfig. There're so much ways from "generic kernel" approach - compile as much as you can modules and features into kernel. /lib and initramfs. You can tune you kernel into you needs, For exemple my development server in KVM in my laptop is working very fast after I made custom kernel and turned on featers RedHat suggests. And so on.
But partially you're right. Lot of things depend on your personal needs and how you use your laptop.

there is no checkbox. you either have a toolbar, or the program is unusable in single-window mode according to apple's very concerned designers. also, you can not hide the toolbar without hiding the sidebar. that's freedom man.
the apple philosophy is "we think it makes more sense"
which is a really autistic philosophy since not all people have or should have your needs and opinions, even if you're a developer
better to write an "essay" on your personal blog and hope people do it your "better" way than to force your drivel into peoples lives
>show/hide individual GUI elements
all of the software i used on linux let you do that, and hide the toolbar without hiding the sidebar. i don't know what shit you were using.
>you can't show hidden files by toggling the defaults setting and just refreshing finder in 10.11

>>51441996
many major PM features are left up to userland, so low quality software on that end is often at fault.
configuring kernel-end features like process and I/O scheduling can help a little bit, but most of your power isn't going to be used there. it's going to vanish when userland doesn't play nice, or when userland is so inefficient that the power saving features it boasts are rendered moot.
and then you get that one laptop with ACPI and GPU features that aren't not even close to being fully supported.

efficiency is not user-dependent
it makes sense to open new folders in new windows because that way you can get "back" easily (by just closing the windows that opened on top).
> but i want to go back via my 1337 keyboard input cmd + up
just close the window, same effect
> but i don't want several windows on top of each other
then just use finder in normal mode or install one of the many replacements
or dig into the software and see if you can fix it with a script or a terminal command
do you really expect the OS to run exactly like you want it to in every regard? because that's real autism: Real autism isn't trying to fit your OS to the needs of the many, it's the kind of "i'm the center of the world" egocentric thinking you are displaying.
OSX isn't perfect, but your expectations are unrealistic.
>all of the software i used on linux let you do that, and hide the toolbar without hiding the sidebar. i don't know what shit you were using.
really? tell me then, which file browser, which office suite, which picture viewer are you using?
>>51442086
>>you can't show hidden files by toggling the defaults setting and just refreshing finder in 10.11
>>you have to kill finder
which is literally a matter of two clicks and it even opens with all the windows from your last session. like what even is your problem?
>all of the software i used on linux let you do that, and hide the toolbar without hiding the sidebar. i don't know what shit you were using.
neither nautilus nor thunar nor konqueror or nemo or dolphin let you show/hide elements to the extent OSX does

efficiency is bother user dependent and not. a user who doesn't use the keyboard will have a harder time with single-window finder, but if i just ctrl+arrow'd from fullscreen emacs i'm already on the keyboard, so i'll have a harder time managing all those extra stacked windows, especially if i have windows other than finder open on the same space. it's necessitates constant context switching. theoretically, you could use the keyboard and the trackpad at the same time, but then you'd destroy your wrist trying to perform every keybind one-handed. you could also fill finder's toolbar with every possible action or use the menu, but that's an efficiency issue. longer toolbars and drop-down menus are just slower than familiar chords and smaller toolbars because of the time spent navigating them.
and then you have quirks that affect you no matter what input device you're using. take finder's special snowflake focus behaviour. if you open another app from finder, like preview, and then close it, focus won't return to finder. focus returns to the previous window with all other applications. that's an extra click or command-tab no matter how you spin it, and specific to finder. it's not a bug/feature, it's just a bug.
>Real autism isn't trying to fit your OS to the needs of the many, it's the kind of "i'm the center of the world" egocentric thinking you are displaying.
that's called being used to good software. if that's autistic, so is bitching about having to take the bus because your car broke down. you're like someone's whiny grandfather, except you say "autistic" instead of "spoiled pansies" because the nice things don't cost money anymore.
expecting developers to behave like the user is priority #1 isn't unrealistic. it's what i'm fucking used to, because it happened. in reality.

all you have to do is press alt

i just tried this and it doesnt happen for me. not sure what you mean

no, you want software to be tailored towards your snowflake behavior that's not consistent with the way most people use their computer. do you not see that?

what version of OS X? it's probably a bug in that case.
>no, you want software to be tailored towards your snowflake behavior that's not consistent with the way most people use their computer. do you not see that?
i'm used to software like that. i'm used to software made by people who know users are smart, and people who think computers should adapt to users instead of vice-versa. it's a more modern approach, don't you think? in an ideal future, users would configure their machines using natural language. "apple, go back when i swipe right with two fingers instead of scrolling the finder window" instead of "okay, so where was that setting?"
>no sidebar
it has a sidebar, but it's not like OS X's. it's multiple side-panes.
>toolbar doesn't allow for easy adding or removal
iirc it already had every element on it, and there weren't many. future versions of gtk should definitely allow for that though.
>why even install OSX if you're gonna use that
the way you describe emacs indicates that you don't know what it actually is

then open a ticket, or install a different file manager, or just show the toolbar... you're really blowing this issue out of proportion
you're expecting customizability that isn't there in any of the FLOSS (or other ) equivalents
>>51442778
i'm using el-capitan. apple doesn't know what a stable release is any better than the arch devs.
>tell me these folks are sane, intelligent individuals
they are. they're using software that is ideal for them instead of trying to get used to things they don't like.
>that completely breaks your argument though
no, it means i forgot viewnior was flawed, not as seriously as finder aka silentbehaviourchanges.app, but still flawed. at least i could open one image and press left to see the next image in the folder without going through extra steps. spacefm didn't have that toolbar flaw.
>it's a text editor with too many fucking addons
it's a text editor with user-defined behaviour using an easy to learn and use scripting language. the "addons" aren't necessary, just there so you're not left with nothing but notepad and an elisp engine. since most things on a unix system can be represented by text, it follows that a text editor can easily become a user's primary interface. vim is guilty of this as well. its sole difference is defining more text editing features in C instead of having them written in vimscript. emacs is just the direction a lot of modern software is going, albeit slowly, because until NLP gets way more advanced "easy scripting languages" not being all that easy is going to be a limiting factor on adoption - especially since everyone is choosing a different "easy scripting language". plan 9 provided a glimpse into a solution to that, but it's not happening any time soon...
if you dislike that and consider it bloat, feel free to use ex-vi.
>>51442806
you're still gay
>>51442816
dude, it's there in spacefm, and alt-option clearing history is expected and defined behaviour, not a bug. there is no bug in this issue. it's more like a feature request that apple doesn't feel like listening to.
>you're blowing this issue out of proportion
2bh i don't actually care or flip out in real life. i'm just using finder with the toolbar right now, actually, i mean, dude, i'm not really autistic and incapable of adapting to anything, but it's fun to rant on 4chan. you can't rant in real life. that would be rude. real people can't choose just not to hear what you're saying as easily as a 4chan user can recursively filter a string of replies.
i don't think anyone here acts like their normal selves, and i hope they don't, because that would be terrible
