Is it possible that internet becomes completely free in the future? Besides the initial infrastructure, what are the recurring costs that an ISP has to take care of? What's stopping very basic internet (1-10mbps) from being completely free?
>>
>>51439065
I barely get 8mb down on my university. Although i get about 30-40up
>>
>>51440331
jews. seriously though, name a thing that has become free due to low maintenance cost.
>>
>>51440331
You have to maintain the lines (which cost money) and implement QoS (so that you can oversell the lines). You have to build hubs and datacenters (for caching so that you don't have to download files from the other side of the world through 30 hops, and to minimize line length) and you have to actually lay the lines as cities evolve.
>>
>>51440931
But I can't think of anything that a government can't pay for with taxes without the people bitching about it. That's mostly cause I don't know what running the internet requires.

>>51441151
Maintaining the lines and service shouldn't be too difficult. They do it with electricity.

>You have to build hubs and datacenters
Are these necessary if you have fast internet (10-20mbps)? And doesn't it come down to the companies hosting the sites to take care of these?

Even if all these things take money, couldn't it be paid for with a fraction of taxpayer money?
>>
>>51441639
>They do it with electricity.
Electricity doesn't connect worldwide and doesn't require connection to an existing network.

>Are these necessary if you have fast internet
Top fucking kek. Why do you think your internet is fast in the first place?
>>
>>51441713
>Electricity doesn't connect worldwide and doesn't require connection to an existing network.
Yeah, but you do need to maintain the infrastructure and upgrade it. Also, you do need to connect it to an existing network.

>Why do you think your internet is fast in the first place?
Most sites big enough have servers everywhere. Smaller sites can pay their hosting company to have their sites expanded with more hosts. It's all paid for via advertising. What am I missing?

1000/200, guaranteed 300/50 I think. I can pretty much always reach 200 up, but during the day on weekends I barely have 300 down. Still, I'm not complaining. I pay about $21 for this and it comes with TV and phone.
