You're right. Intel releases both tall and short versions of the machines (height difference is like 1 inch). They cost the same, but the taller one can house 2.5" SATA3 disk.

They run on the low-energy versions of Intel CPUs, Broadwell-U, Skylake, etc. They are fan-cooled, but generally very quiet.

Not that anon but I don't have a pc with more than 1TB storage, and despite my nas is bigger the sum of documents, music, pictures, videos, movies and series for my family doesn't exceed 700GB. Let's be serious, there's no need for more than 256GB on an everyday machine, unless you are so tech illiterate you keep your whole life on it (and normies nowadays use external HDDs).
>>
>>51433006
What is this? A reasonable answer on /g/ without "rice", "kek", "gentoo", greentext, "kill yourself"? How...is that even possible.
>>
There is no reason for a stationary pc to be small.

And it sure isnt worth having most of the disadvantages of a laptop.
>>
>>51433006
This. Every home should have a desktop because is comfortable to have a place for your everyday computing needs (browsing with a good monitor, good speakers, print a document ecc) and these are small, fast enough with an ssd, low powered for (let's say) my mom, my dad, my brother, even me if I'm not video editing. Let's wait for them to lower the price under 300€ for a standard i3/4gb/128gb ssd and they'll be the new desktops.
>>
>>51434614
I meant low powered AND enough for....
>>
>>51432745
why wouldn't you just buy a laptop with a broken screen?
it probably throttles less, and has a built in ups
>>
I really wanted a small and energy efficient machine for my file server so I started looking at nucs and their brethren with atoms. I soon realized that I would have no way of achieving the storage capacity that I want though. Is there anything similar to this that I can add at least two 3.5" hard drives to? Clearly it would have to be larger than normal.

I was looking at Acer's Revo Build series (on sale at amazon) and that would be what I'm looking for if they sold empty expansion cases that I could add my own drives to.

Mate, engineering intelligence has yet to compact my powerful server computer into the size of a atom. Ha. Ha.

Check out laptops, they compact everything into one chip, added a screen, and sent them off.

>Degraded efficient performance.

I have always seen microservers have issues with intense task using the best Xeon CPU available.

Arm is not as supported as Xeon so I cannot comment on arm and performance with compacted computers.

The point of it is that motherboards that offer the best speed and engineering have stayed the same size for 20 years. Whether it is making the circuits shorter or simply better quality, tower sized motherboard will always be better in tasks built for computers. Specific devices smaller then a tower sized motherboard should be on used for 1 service role and not as a full functional pc.

Android isn't nearly as good as ChromeOS for mouse and keyboard.

She has a laptop that is permanently on her living room table with a long hdmi cable running to the TV (I got her a chromecast last year to cut the cable but she couldn't wrap her head around 'casting' video to the TV). She asked me about a new laptop, and I figured she'd want a Chromebook (she uses only one application on her current laptop which is Chrome). But she tells me her eyes are getting shit and she actually uses her huge TV as the monitor exclusively (despite having a pretty huge iirc 15" laptop), so this ChromeBit seems perfect. Combine that with something like pic related and you have a good facebook / media-consumption PC for cheaper than I ever would have thought possible.

Everyone is bashing these, can you post a build with better specs for less money?
>>

My work laptop has better specs than my Surface Pro 2, but it runs like fucking dogshit because of all the bullshit they run in the background.

How many people actually add more shit to the point where they fill their case? The most I've ever had in anything that wasn't my computer from elementary/middle school (where I had everything filled due to mostly using dated hardware that I was able to scavenge and needing more to do modern shit at the time, I'd actually open my computer to swap the IDE cable between my CD burner and my much faster CD drive due to the rest of the bus being taken up by low capacity hard drives) was a graphics card, 2 sound cards for the game ports (only used both when playing Descent 2 because muh 6DOF), a CD/DVD drive, 2 hard drives, and a floppy drive.
