I have a stupid question, /g/. How THE FUCK do I stream stuff conveniently from my mac in my local network? Basically I want to access its files from my phone. I can access it via sftp but it's painfully slow, and when I try smb, it says wrong password. I did everything according to https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204445

Why does it matter if my CPU runs cool? I can see it being at melting point being an issue, but why should I give a crap if the processor is 42C instead of 40C?

Holy shit, I have tried every single thing to fix my audio. Everything. I don't want to do a fucking clean install just because of this shit.

Can someone with Windows 7 export or take a screenshot of the following things:

>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\AudioEndpointBuilder
>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\AudioSrv
>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MMCSS

Having weird problems. Can't start the endpoint service, getting error 5 access denied even though I have should have access.

I'm looking at upgrading my video card on my laptop.I need it for work.

Currently I have a Nvidia GeForce 310m. I'm looking at a budget of about $70 max. I've been looking at some and pretty much anything looks like a substantial upgrade from what I have.

My question is, what can I use that will fit In Its place? If anybody has any suggestions.

Also, I'm running an old i5 2.4ghz processor. What could I upgrade to that's at least a 2.8ghz that will fit and won't break my wallet

Is there anyway I can change the program description manually?

Anyone here know the EFI shell? I don't know how to get my VM to boot from the EFI shell.

I followed this tutorial exactly, pic related.

I got all the way to the black EFI shell screen and can't for the life of me figure out how to boot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have spent hours setting this up, and getting stuck here feels so horrible.

>>
>>51393264
Depends on your definition of "future proof." I just upgraded to a Skylake system, and I got 4, almost 5 years out of my previous computer.

I thought I'd get more life out of it, but just couldn't.

I'd say the most you can expect out of current technology is 5 years. Past that and it shows age.

what should/shouldn't I put in a SSD?

I've heard that SSD's die if you write too much to them but then what's the point of having one if you're not supposed to use it? I guess installing Windows there will be okay but is it okay to also install games on it, especially games that will have a gorillion trillion files because of mods?

ALSO I keep seeing this "write cycle limit" thing in reference to SSD lifespan. What constitutes a write cycle? Like, if I dump 20k files in it at once, is that 1 write cycle or 20k?

sorry for being dumb
>>
>>51393458
I am pretty sure we are past the "don't write to much to SSDs" stage.

Modern SSDs have incredible resiliency, and are rated at hundreds, even thousands of terabytes of data written to them.

That would come out to years of constant writing to them. If you get a good quality SSD and use it normally it should last at least 5 years, but probably more like 10 years.
>>
>>51393528

So what I should do is install OS, games and programs to the SSD and download/dump files into the HDD, right?

Also what would be a good budget SSD, like say €100-150?
>>
>>51393447

>>

Sure, get a 1TB normal hard drive to store files that you don't need to be fast, and just install everything on the SSD.

Actually I was planning to use the HDD of my dead laptop to save a bit of money

It's only 320 gigs but I honestly don't think I need a TB, I don't usually keep a lot of huge media files
>>
>>51393720
go for it, if you find you need more storage later just get a decent external, preferably something self powered that can be plugged into the router for a network drive
>>
Extra dumb question, but is there a danger in downloading untrusted .exe files, even if I don't run them or open them at any point?
Can the sole action of downloading the file into a generic folder put the computer at a risk?

How does one make their desktop environment look as pic related? I'm trying to use bbLean and using certain styles, but I think it's not working correctly because 1) I don't have the right program(s) and 2) I'm using Windows 8.1 rather than Windows 7
>>
>>51393438

By future proofing, I pretty much mean being able to run AAA games at ultra settings for the next 2 - 3 years. This build is fairly new and I'm already content with my CPU and storage.
>>

hello i have a computer its old
well the point is there was a storm during the night and i left the computer on and i wake up and i tried to turn it on and it does but turned it off during post, doesnt matter anyways
thing is the computer can post, but the first time i tried to turn it on after i returned it loaded windows but it froze, now when i try to turn it on again it keeps freezing when it tries to load windows
a moment ago i could see the mouse and move it, but after a while the screen went black with a 1 inch line of static/noise
is it the cpu or the gpu that is not working?
i think it is the cpu but i dont have other to test it, i will buy one tomorrow if it is (its socker 775 its old)
the gpu fan spins but at idle speed btw (always did that until windows loaded then it went at a set speed)

Is it technically possible to create a torrent just for my own use to download about 20,000 images of porn when I'm away from home?

What are the trials in creating a torrent for your own use?
>>

You wouldn't use a torrent at all because that is fucking stupid.

Torrents only make sense for distributing to multiple people in the long haul. You would be better off just putting it in drop box or setting up your own file server.

Comparing 128GB SSD to 256GB;

Is there anything wrong with opting for a 128GB option and then getting an SD card to make up the shortfall? Are SD cards reliable for this?

Yes, no, and no,

SD cards shouldn't be used as main storage for computers. They are slow and not reliable enough.

SSDs are cheap now. Just get a 256GB class SSD and be done with it. Wait for black friday and see if there are any good deals for 500GB class SSDs.

>>51395447
ya, what you want is called disc imaging, check out clonezilla
>>
>>51395447
Couple options.

First, use the built in backup implementation in Windows to backup your install. Preferably to an external hard drive. I'd also manually copy and paste important files to the external drive as well. Then install whatever Linux distro you want, wiping Windows in the process. When done, if you don't want to stick with Linux, you can restore Windows from the backup.

Second, and probably the easier option, is get a secondary drive to install Linux on. You can get a small, older SSD of craigslist for cheap. Unplug your Windows drive from the motherboard and plug in your Linux drive. Fuck around with Linux, then if you don't like in plug your Windows drive back in.
