Yeah, Telepathy Shoujo Ran does have an interesting different approach to the "childhood friend story", but I think part of that is that it has a female MC and--despite being categorized as a shonen anime--it plays by a lot of shoujo rules. Not the really unpleasant ones, fortunately.
