I've never used cron before, and even after doing
 man cron
and looking all over the internet, I'm not sure why this fucking task won't run. This is what I have in my crontab:
 00 * * * * /usr/bin/overviewer --config=/root/overviewer/default

It's supposed to run every hour of every day that the system is on, at 00 minutes, eg. 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, etc.
Why is it not? If the code completed, I would have a page on my website that would actually load, and it doesn't, meaning the html that the code generates was, well, not generated.
Anyone have experience with cron? it's a fickle little bitch.

Just bought a lagdroid. Performance and battery wise it's better to use adway (rooted) or adblock plus (without root) to block ads system-wide?

Also, it's possible to install nova laucher and do all those ricing without root?

So, I work at a Radioshack store that is partnered with Sprint and I just heard the Sprint guy tell a customer something that sounded like complete horseshit.

Basically, their Samsung marketing rep told them to tell customers that the reason the new Galaxy phones don't have SD cards is because their researchers found that having an SD card "slowed down" the phone and reduced performance.

Something about "read-write speeds affecting memory access".

To me, it sounds like marketing buzzwords to convince people to buy the new phones. A way for them to attempt to convince customers that they were justified in removing features.
>>
>>51362365
Samsung is a bloated shit, you are right it's bullshit. I bet my ass that using class 10 sd cards there is no perceptible effect.

>>
>>51362365
and your question is?

SD card can't slow down the performance of a device as long as it's used with it's purpose ie a storage solution.

Large applications installed on a SD card or ones that have to acces large portions of themselves from an SD card can be slowed down because SD cards should in theory be slower than the built in flash storage.

But having one for music, photos and videos?
Absolutely not.

What you have to do is build a new PC from scratch.

A new motherboard will give you better upgrade options, change PSU to incease lifespan, CPU is fine even talking about amd shitposting but i would recommend you to switch to a I5 and get a 1150 socket motherboard instead an AM3+ motherboard based on what you do.

My most demanding activity is probably CS:GO
>>
>>51364143
well then you cant just "copy" windows. You can clone a drive if youre using a hdd as your os drive but not if your using an ssd. Just pirate 8, install it and update to 10 for free. First time building a pc you always worry about the os being pirated or not i think. Happy 16th btw!

Hello guys. I have a question and I know you guys are brutally honest on your answers. It's gonna be long winded but please bear with me

I have a very old PC that I build in 2011 I think. It's a Phenom II x3 (4th core unlocked) with a Radeon 6850 video card. Used it as a WoW rig but now I don't play that much games as I would like to but still play Dota2, Hots, Hon, and some backlog games like Tomb Raider, Arkham City etc.

Recently, I kind of want to play some titles like GTA V and Fallout 4 but as you would have realized, these can only be played in the absolute lowest settings in my PC with like, 20 fps. Anyways, I am very very cash starved right now and can't really upgrade my PC sadly, but here's a weird opportunity that presented

My neighbor is moving to Europe and he's looking to get rid of his PC which, funnily, is as old as mine. I checked his PC and I can't really use most of his parts except maybe the RAM, and get this, HE HAS A GTX 760. He said he bought it 1 1/2 year ago but he seldom used it

He's selling the whole thing for $100 CAD. So, the question is, is it worth it? Would I get some decent performance boost on my PC if I just salvage the video card and put it on mine?

Thanks and sorry for the wall of text
>>
>>51364469
It would be an increase if it was legit, but is the guy knowledgeable? Is he trustworthy? Do you know him personally? Do you know for a fact that he only uses it seldomly? Did he overclock the thing?

When it comes to second hand hardware there's a lot more to it than just "oh it's a better gpu than mine"
>>
>>51364546
Just some hi's and hellos casually. Small talks etc. He didn't overclock it and I don't think he lied when he told me so. And I don't think he games because when I try and do small talk on new games and Blizzcon and The International he doesn't recognize any of it.

He said it was a gift and just slapped it in.

I have about 600gb of stuff to backup. 99% of this are things that I probably won't edit or delete, so it should be pretty remain static for the most part.

I just want to confirm that if I use an automated backup solution like attic or something, so that backups are made every day, the entire history of backups shouldn't grow much faster than the original data, right?

That is to say, if I backup everything now, and then add a few gigs of things over the next few months, the entire backup archive, including history, should also only increase by a few gigs, right?

It could also be that your PC is booting but the GPU can't puke the pixels at your screen.
Try onboard graphics or some old gpu you may have lying around to test this

>>
>>51365341
The motherboard is pretty much irrelevant for performance. Just pick one that can fit all the parts and has all the features you want and have a look around the internet to make sure there are no known issues with that model.

If you want to OC, make sure it has a decent BIOS/UEFI and have a look at its power delivery section, generally you want it to be pretty beefy and have proper heatsinks for cooling.

>>51365672
2 pins are just the signal and ground
3 pins generally are signal, ground and power (+5V AFAIK) and are used for boards that may also provide an optical output and/or the signal is being level-shifted by some active circuitry (connection the signal and ground pins directly to a S/PDIF input may break the devices in this case, don't unless you're sure the signal is at the proper voltage)
No idea about 4 pins
>>
>>51365748
So what good is a 2 pin when all the adapters seem to want power?

>>
>>51365797
All my shit has 3 pin headers, but I imagine a 2 pin header would most likely connect straight up to another device's input from an electrical point of view. So you'd just need to connect a typical RCA jack to those pins and you have your S/PDIF output.

I've been really patient about this up until now but I can't stand it anymore.

I've had so many issues with using displayport on my monitors. I have 2 dell u2414h and one u2415.

On all three of them whenever I connect with displayport in any way (including trying to daisy chain them.) they constantly blink to black over and over, sometimes more frequently than other times.

My GPU is a sapphire R9 290 so it has 2 dvi, 1 hdmi, and 1 DP. Connecting to either of the dvi ports or the hdmi port works fine.

I've tried installing the drivers for the monitors. i upsated my GPU drivers. I've tried buying new displayport cables from a trusted displayport vendor (accel).

what the fuck is wrong?

I've had the exact same shit happen to me with the new 4K monitor I bought. It was either completely black or blinking. In my case it was the cable. I was using some cable I had used with my U2713HM which worked completely fine with that monitor at that resolution, but I couldn't get 4K until I used the one that came with the new monitor.

Try lower resolutions on the DP monitor, see if that fixes anything.

My cards are 290X CF with the same display connectors.
>>
>>51366613

Kinda defeats the purpose of having a large monitor if you can't use it at it's native resolution.

So you think it might be the cable then? should I just shell out for another cable from some other brand?

I would like a laptop capable of 3d modeling and timely rendering / baking etc etc.

Why a lap top? I have a job that has me moving every month, and often limited space and no desks.

If an anon has an alternative method of making a desktop "portable" I'd be welcome to that as well.
>>
So I basically fucked up because I didn't listen to /g/ and bought an H series motherboard, H170-D3H to be precise, to save some dosh instead of the Z-170 series. I planned on O/Cing the 6600k I have but obviously I need to replace my Mobo.

Am I able to simply swap the components on a Windows 8.1 system without reinstalling windows and reformatting the system drive? The rest of the system will remain the same. I was under the impression windows freaked out if you changed too much of the system it was installed on or that windows might not be configured properly and the drivers or something might fuck up but I've found information to the contrary suggesting it can be done, Can it be done? If I try it and it doesn't work could I fuck everything up (again)?

Feel free to include scathing remarks about my intelligence with your answer, I deserve it.

I'm on Win 8.1, how the fuck do I get my window size and desktop icon positions to stay the same and not fuck around after resolution changes?

Like every time I try to run an older game like TIE Fighter or Riven or some shit, and I got forcibly resized down to 800x600 or something tiny like that, when I close it and go back to my desktop at 1920x1080, all my windows have been squashed down to that claustrophobic size and my icons fucked up and I have to manually go through and resize all my windows or at least resize one and reopen the rest, not to mention putting all my icons back. More of a social/entertainment thing for me. I mainly just use a scripted HUD to teleport to random simulators and see what's going on there. Other than that, I just dress up my virtual qt and DJ at a club occasionally.

If you use an WYSIWYG editor, there most likely is a function built-in to open the webpage in the specified browser, which you have to have installed anyway.

I'm learning assembly for Comp Architecture and this line in my decryption program still confuses me:

xor buffer[esi],al

I understand what's happening of course. The AL register is receiving data from 0x000000CE which happens to be the key needed for decryption. Now, why is it that the register is visually empty, or rather shows as a '??' for its contents. buffer happens to be the encrypted message. [esi] of course being the number of times through the loop, looping for each character. But how does buffer[esi] get me there? The syntax is confusing me.

So for the longest time I have this problem.
On my home internet connection (router [in bridge mode] -> modem) I have this issue where some pages simply won't work in Firefox, Chrome, etc, with the exception of Edge (seems to be fucking up as well lately)

I have completely no idea what is wrong, and seeing as I'm not retarded I've tried switching dns servers, checking out different settings on the network card, blocking ipv6, etc etc but to no avail.

The problem is that much weirder that in any network OTHER than mine, my laptop works completely fine with every single browser on the previously mentioned websites.

Any idea what could be the problem? My iPhone/other devices load the pages flawlessly.

>>
>>51366677
Well, no idea if you're still around today, but anyway.

It does sound like some sort of connectivity issue to me. I don't think it's software or driver related if it works intermittently. Maybe try updating VGA BIOS? I've never heard of anything like that helping, I don't even know if the VGA BIOS has any control over the way the display outputs are driven or if that is all done at a purely hardware level, but won't hurt to try I guess.

Does it ALWAYS blink, like even if you're in the mobo's UEFI/BIOS?

Have you tried physically jiggling the cable/connections? A bad connection doesn't necessarily have to be a bad cable

If a lower res works, then that kind of confirms that something could be going on with the connection, it can handle the lower bandwidth required for low res but not for high res.

Does the blinking rate seem to depend on something like how long the monitors have been on? How many of them are daisy chained? GPU temperature?

I don't have any brand name DP cables, just noname shit or cables that came with monitors. Ideally I'd say try another DP source too if you can, that could definitely help with troubleshooting.

ASCII is plain text, like what I'm writing here. Unicode is everything ASCII has but also several thousand additional symbols and characters not supported by ASCII plaintext.

16 bit means its space in memory is 16 bits long. A bit has 2 possible values of course (0 or 1), so 2^16 is 65,536. There's 65,536 possible values it can contain. That is its range.
Unsigned means that it does not have a sign bit, which would be an additional bit that determines whether the number is positive or negative (doubling its range from 0 to 65,536 to instead be a range from -65,536 to 65,536.

RVA is Relative Virtual Address, it's a temporary location in memory. What tool are you using to edit the exe resources?
>>

Resource Builder as I can find nothing else where I can access the dialog I need altered. When I attempt to save changes, I get an RVA mismatch error.

Download Hiren's Boot CD (http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/)

It's the only way I can find that will get you the tool you need without paying for it (Can't link to torrents here, otherwise I'd recommend that path)

Open up Hiren's and start Disk Genius. Use it to perform a full backup of your current HDD and store it all to a .img file. Then use the Recover option to write the .img to your SSD.
>>
>>51375558
It's possible the exe is protected somehow. What's the exe and what do you want to edit? I could try to do it for you

Coincidentally, that's also on sale for $15 off. Should I get it or go for a Logitech or something? Pic related is my current one, some piece of shit GAYMING mouse that a coworker have me after my previous one died.
>>
>>51375433
Get a Logitech G700 instead. Far superior wireless/wired rechargeable mouse with more programmable buttons and a cheaper price.
>>
>>51375803
To clarify I say this after using a Mamba for years and switching to the G700, was a huge difference.

Also Razer software is shit, automatic profile switching was practically useless
>>
>>51375838
How large is the G700? I used the M705 in the past and that mouse was so small it felt difficult to use.
>>
>>51375886
I think the size is pretty standard, maybe a bit taller than average, gently curves on the left side for the side buttons and good thumb rest place and is pretty ergonomic overall.

Deathadder is top tier, not just for gaymen, but also for just daily use. You have to get specific ones, though. The original was the best, the 3G was also good, and the DeathAdder 2013 is also very good. I would avoid the other versions like the chroma and any "X editions"
>>
>>51376039
The one they're selling is the DeathAdder Classic for $45. I assume that's the 2013 one. Should I get it?

>how exactly have you checked? if it's stopped working altogether I fucking guarantee that it's your invertor
I've bought and replaced the inverter, but it still doesn't work. I also know that the LCD panel itself isn't the problem because I've connected it to another laptop and the backlight worked. I'm thinking it might be a faulty fuse in the motherboard or something. Might be the cable connecting the motherboard with the inverter as well.

I've noticed something when deleting files from Fat32 micro sd card under linux, it get corrupted.
Is that a known issue? I looked it up but nothing comes up.
No the said sd card won't get detected.
Or could the micro sd card reader failing?
Also when I try to eject USB mass storage device or something I get a notification about needing to write some files, but I'm not moving any files whatsoever , could this be the cause?

My motherboard has an LED and says FF. It won't display anything on the screen. Everything turns on. The fans and such. I recently installed a new graphics card and it was working yesterday. Now it won't display anything anymore. One thing i did notice is that the fans on the gfx card were louder when it worked. Now it is normal spinning. What can I do?

How can I sell the extra CPU cycles that I don't need when it is idle?
>>
>>51365662
With motherboards, stuff like this is never easy to guess. It could be anything from your mobo acting up (I have my doubts tho) to simply something like the LED dying (which I think is more probable). I wouldn't worry too much, it's just an LED. If you haven't noticed anything else, I wouldn't think much more of it.

The display on my notebook is dead. I can only see vertical lines on a pink-ish background.

I want to be sure it's actually the LCD and not the connector on the motherboard before I buy a new one, though.

There's no beeping during boot, Windows starts fine (you can hear the startup) and outputting to external works.
