depends on your knowledge. Installing it shouldn't take you a lot of time (less than an hour the first time, maybe 30 minutes).
What is "difficult" and long is once installed, to install all the packages you need and want, and set it up.
If you're one of those ricers and want it to be exactly as you want, it will definitively be a time sink OS.
Last time I did an arch install was on a shitty laptop. Took me 2 hours to get everything working.
any advice for someone using an acpi fucked dell laptop? No battery and im using a 3rd party charger that the system can't recognize. Running arch 64bit at the moment. Can't enter bios setup unless i choose the "experimental multiboot" memtest grub option in debian. Dunno what that's about though.

How do I get the realtek 1150 audio drivers on linux? I tried to compile it but it gave weird errors so I gave up on that.
Sorry if this is more of an /SQT/ question. What determines hardware compatibility in Linux? Is it the kernel? If so, does that mean that if a certain machine's hardware config works perfectly on one distro, it'll work on them all?

The best advice I can give you is :
install debian in a VM. During the install process it will ask you which DE you want to install. Select all of them. On the login screen, the display manager (DM) will gives you the choice of the DE you want to use for this session.
Try them, go to the config panel and see what you can modify and make your own idea.
Personally I prefer cinnamon over the other DE and find gnome a unusable garbage, while a lot of people find gnome great and cinnamon bloated shit.

Different distributions use different kernel versions, but in general, once hardware starts working on Linux it rarely stops working with newer kernel versions. The major exception is binary drivers (like Catalyst or the Nvidia drivers) since they don't always keep up with the pace of kernel development.
After 3 days of trying to get VirtualBox and several USB drives to work, I'm finally running Arch off a CD.
I tried this much earlier but when I run cfdisk I'm staring at my only SSD and nothing else, so I stopped in order to not fuck up my Windows install with partitions.
All associated guides I've done assume you're willing Windows in favor of Arch, which would be devastating for me. Am I just fucked and should quit now? Or is there a safe way of dual booting?

it's the kernel and kernel modules, yes
it's not guaranteed to work because you can compile a thousand different kernel versions with all different kinds of configs, but most of the major distros are similar enough that if you have zero problems on one you are unlikely to see them on another, especially if it's a more common hardware setup. If you really know your hardware you can learn what kernel config options make it go and be able to compile your own kernel and get it working all the time
linux hardware compatibility is something I always look for when I'm buying new shit because it is by far the worst and most annoying problems I've ever had while using linux

I have a question about task scheduling.
I have a mediaPC connected to my TV and surround speaker system with Windows on it.
I want to make the change to Linux, but the Windows box has 1 very specific feature I'm not sure if I can recreate on Linux.
The Windows Task Scheduler allows me to turn my computer off at a certain time. I know I can do this easily with cron, but the Task Scheduler checks if I'm busy and then waits for me to finish.
So if I set my computer to turn off at 22:30, if I'm watching something at 22:30 it'll wait for me to finish watching, then turn off the computer automatically after 10 minutes of idle.
How do I do this on Linux? It's such a specific thing that googling didn't help much.

I can't seem to be able to get the touchpad toggle work on Arch+GNOME.
I attached a script for toggling it to a personal shortcut in the Gnome menu, but it doesn't seem to work. The script works perfectly when executed in the TTY.

No idea, I don't use toilet and I don't use opensuse. It it really doesn't have a package then create your own package, it looks like a simple problem so shouldn't be difficult. If you can't do that then clone the repository or download the source, make and make install it in to whatever prefix you want (~/.local/bin, /opt/bin, /usr/local/bin) whatever. There will be instructions on how to do this in the build instructions.

I'm gonna completely ditch Windows outside of rare gaming now that I'm buying an SSD. Is Kubuntu stable enough already? Last time I tried it was with KDE4 and I hear KDE5 is buggy.
Also is there any stacking (+ possibly tiling) WM better than kWin? I want KDE regardless for the sweet GUI options but I'm open for better WM alternatives.

Thats absolutely doable. There might be cron specific gotchas in setting this up for a beginner, but it's not some next level wizardry.
A way to make it easier to Google, would be to ask yourself the question "how does the system know if I'm busy”. Once you know that, it might get simpler for you. From the top of my head, I could think of googling
- how to prompt the user for input with zenity
- Linux how to check if processor is busy
- Linux check for user idleness
Good luck and watch out for gotchas with crown and user-specific commands.

I've installed Antergos with Openbox, and everytime after resume, which I have to log in again afterwards, the screen's black. I have to shut down the machine and turn it back on again.
I think I made a poo-poo outside the loo in GNOME. Basically, my problem is that I cannot open GNOME applications (like nautilus or evolution) from the shell by clicking on their icons (either via the super menu or through desktop icons). When trying to open them like that they show up in the top panel for a second or five but don't actually spawn a window or working application. Opening these applications from the alt+f2 prompt or via terminal works just fine. This is on a regular desktop computer (no weird GPU or CPU) and a fresh Arch install.
Does anyone have any idea where I done fucked up?

so i am looking to switch from Windows to Linux on my desktop, and I wasn't sure which distro I should go with. I have some experience with Ubuntu, but wasn't sure if i should make the big jump to gentoo, since i hear it has a bit of a learning curve. Do you think I would be better off with something a bit more user friendly, to learn the quirks of linux, like maybe fedora or something, or to jump into gentoo? I don't know if we should recommend it for one thing : if you need the wifi, you'll have to install the driver for it. It's easy, but it's not something a normie should do. It's better to recommend something that works out of the box.
I only recommend debian for one thing : testing the various DE, since you can install them all during the install process of the system, which make it easier to try them.

Is there any short writeup or video somewhere about how a Linux system generally works? Like, on Windows we have C:\ as the Windows partition with Windows in a folder. There's the control panel and the registry too. I never managed to visualize how Linux looks and it made navigating folders with the terminal harder than needed.
Several months ago I tried Xubuntu and it was generally pleasant except for a few bugs, but I had a hard time dealing with the above. I'm getting a gaymen PC next week and I want to use my laptop for Xubuntu again.

there's a ton of abstract concepts and designs that will mean nothing to you until you see it actually working. Unix file permissions have very little meaning until you install something as root and then try to run it under your normal user account and smacks you in the face with 1 line of output that you weren't expecting.

versions may vary and I guess theming that maybe added or supplemented.
Most distros compile their own packages so it may be that some distros compile certain packages with certain features enabled or disabled which can have an impact on performance, stability, and of course, what is available for you. This process starts at the kernel and goes down through system tools and libraries, and then in to DE type things so in theory there could be a lot of unseen differences, aside from and in addition to package version numbers, which can impact your experience.
But basically, version numbers aside, there's not much difference.

They are precompiled yes, for the most part. Not necessarily optimized as such.
I believe distrowatch lists the DEs available as default in ISOs but I could be wrong about that, I don't pay much attention to that website.
There is a change a particular distro doesn't have a DE in its repos so you could say they don't support it but as far as I know that's fairly uncommon.

No idea about freezing, would need more info. The thing is pretty much all distros are the same underneath, just with a different desktop environment. Jumping from one to another isn't really changing much.

So being the idiot that I executed hex code in terminal which ended up overwriting my MBR. I'm on Mint and not happy so a reinstall is kind of a blessing in disguise. I've always wanted to try arch as it is the most different from anyrhing ive used but whats its benefits over super stable distros like debian?

To start, I don't really like Unity. Windows lose their minimize buttons when they're maximized, alt-tab doesn't show other instances of the same program, built in file explorer is clunky, >software manager, Canonical botnet, and some other things I'm forgetting. I'd say go with gnome and play with the gnome-shell extensions, there's one that makes alt + tab coverflow look nice and work right, and if you don't like the way the dash works there's dash to dock, and all sorts of stuff to play with, oh and don't forget gnome tweak tool, it makes adjusting things and turning extensions on/off a breeze

Hello linux wizards. I am using linux mint 17.2 and I am having some issues with displaylink. I'm running two extra monitors with some gook shit I bought from china and it works just fine for Vim. However it is fickle as all hell and breaks constantly. If I do everything in the correct order I end up with both extra displays running at correct resolution, but my laptop ends up at its full resolution (which is obnoxiously high at 3200 x 1800) even though I had it at a lower resolution before starting the arcane rituals required.
To fix this, is there any way to make the OS think that the highest resolution is 1360 x 768?
Im in the middle of a project with an intense deadline, so I cannot take drastic measure before christmas (and yes, I like mint but its time to move on because of shit like this)

nvm I tried it now because I needed console readout from laptop screen and vim on both monitors. I got all sorts of graphical artifacts and both the screens started turning on and off.
After throwing its little tantrum suddendly everything went black, and then all screens turned on at correct resolution and no artifacts, and it now works like a charm. Thanks anon!

From my experience, if you use it regularly, and keep it up to data, generally you should be fine with that much. Bear in mind, of course, that you can generally do other things while compiling software. The installation might be slow, but sont unreasonably faster than a Windows install even still (if you do not manage to muck everything up :^} )

I would be surprised if it takes more than one or two days. If you say you have used Linux for 15 years, I imagine you know well enough what you are doing to not mess everything up (or to get yourself out of it if you do).
Otherwise, it depends what you want to install. Depending on how you configure it, you kernel compile time can take radically different times. I assume you ant X, which will add a bunch, and of course another WM or DE, which will take potentially not very long.
Basically, it depends a ton. If you choose the order you install things in carefully, you will be able to make it usefull first, and then keep setting it up over a while.

I have a core2duo 2.2ghz with 4gb of ram and I use funtoo. Kernel can take quite a while, it's a toss up between editing the config to make it faster and leaving enough in there to make it guaranteed to work so you don't have to recompile). Installation didn't take me too long, I use awesome rather than a DE and I as far as i remember I think it took about a day altogether.
There are only a handful of things which take more than an hour to compile. Be sure to set up -j2, use ccache (not useful at first but will make updates/re-emerges faster), and set this up - https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Portage_TMPDIR_on_tmpfs
I would recommend funtoo, the installation docs are more concise than gentoo and the stage3 now includes a kernel so this will dramatically decrease the amount of time you will be compiling. When it comes to updating you can emerge gentoo-sources and trim down your config and take your time with it.
Updating in general is pretty quick, most packages only take a couple of minutes.

In this particular case, just do a find and replace of 'jessie' to 'stretch' in the file. Do an apt update/upgrade/dist-upgrade and you're done!

rebooting isn't really the solution to things in linux. It's working, but it's probably just working because it's restarting your networkmanager or whatever you have installed that's using it. If you can find any relevant info in the logs you might find out what service is causing the errors, and just restarting that manually without rebooting will fix it the same way
of course with that relevant info you're also starting to find out a real fix for it. Checking logs is basically the first thing you should do because without that info it could be anything, from a hardware fault to something you're doing intentionally that also triggers it

if it was in your /etc/fstab earlier, it might be trying to mount it the same way it did before, like a normal hard drive. What type does it show it mounted as when you run "mount"?
you can either try to comment out that line in your fstab if that drive is in there as a normal hard drive, or run mount -t iso9660 /dev/sdc /mnt/location

ls -c sorts by the change timestamp, ls -t sorts by the modify timestamp. Take a look at `man ls` to see more options.
You could use this to write or run a script that updates a link, or just use it in a script to find the newest modified file and have that function similar to a link.

It's not difficult at all, it's just involved. Everything is documented so really it's pretty simple. Only difficulty can be with the kernel but I would recommend using funtoo because it comes with a premade kernel so you can get your install up and running and then create a custom kernel at your own leisure. You would probably notice the difference of the architecture optimization with a computer that old as well.
That said, compiling would take a while on a toaster 10 years old but by no means out of the question. You could look at something like lubuntu or even puppy/porteus.
