I fell for the SSD meme.
My boot time on my debian laptop was shorted by 30 seconds.
That's it.
Nothing felt snappier, it didn't blow away my desktop running 3 raided 4TB spinning rust drives.
It didn't even improve my battery life.
I could have bought a video game instead of this shit.

How about you try to use it? Start a scan for malware and notice how it finishes in half the time.

I love my SSD.
>laptop is now silent
>doesn't produce a lot of heat
>can move it around without worrying about datacorruption
>everything is fast
It's truly a great investment for a laptop.

>remove dead HDD from laptop
>plug in cheap flash drive
>install OS to flash drive with noatime, no browser cache and other tweaks to reduce writes
>change fan settings
>use NAS for mass storage
No investment needed

I wish I had one, I wouldn't mind having faster boot and program loading times. I'll probably get a 128GB one this black friday and use pic related to replace my optical drive on my laptop.

Flash drives are unreliable.

Unless you're trying to make a RAID array or remove it that's not an issue, and important data is backed up in the NAS anyway

All the russians in the BF4 server need more than one minute, I need 3 seconds. Also instant boot.

That is actually pretty clever.

It's pretty cheap too, the ssd optical drive thingie only costs like $10 too.

its called sleep mode you idiot

Why would I do that?
I run linux.

The difference between a flash drive and an SSD is the controller.
SSDs have their own controller and works independently from the OS, doing maintenance on itself and emulating sata commands so the OS thinks a hard disk is spinning in there.
As soon as it receives power it does it's thing.

A flash drive is just a block of nand and a usb controller, useless without a host computer.

how stupid do you have to be to get a linux virus?
>>

No, completely off, bootup under 10 seconds. Stay away, Vista faggot.
>>
>>51301964
You'd have to literally be retarded to think ssd is a meme. A hard drive is the largest bottleneck you can have in a PC.

>muh slow ass spinning disks

Get with the times faggot

Get Samsung 850 PRO, those have decade's warranty.

i recently bought my second.
>also buy a pcie sata card with 2 internal sata iii ports since my motherboard only has sata ii and i figure it's a good time to get the full speed out of my ssds
>install card, ssd, switch sata ports
>drives seem to be hanging randomly
>can't get new ssd to to become active
>install sata card's drivers to see if that will help fix it
>windows also wants to install an update
>w/e, might as well get updating out of the way
>while installing the update i guess my os drive hung and computer froze
>have to force reboot
>says it can't find the master boot record
>have to get out my usb windows recovery shit
>finally get it to boot into os
>computer is still borked, can't get it to boot without the usb, computer is acting weird
>remove sata card and use native ports
>try to run system recovery in windows, application just crashes
>system restore is worthless, just keeps saying it failed after restarting
>finally can't even get it to boot with the usb
>after wasting an entire night of trying to fix it give up and go to bed
>wake up, spend entire morning and afternoon installing windows/drivers/programs on the new ssd
i tell ya hwat, that was some fucking bullshit. wasted my entire weekend and i'm still limited to sata ii speeds.
