Hard question to answer. Different routers are good for different purposes. There are routers with very long Wi-Fi-range other routers have high speed ethernet ports and limited wireless capability.

Just buy Ubee or Huawei because supporting US NSA butt-buddies in 2015 ishygddt and they make better products anyway.
Asus are pretty good, Linksys is solid. Net gear is a serious hit and miss.

Using an el cheapo 842ND with gargoyle (OpenWRT has non-existent automatic QoS out of the box) and it works great. Running a mumble and openvpn server. Never had any performance issues even with heavy P2P and 20-30 people on mumble.
get a system on a board that supports PCIe, and an 8 port gigabit PCIe card and stick it in a box and install some OS + router software
