What's the best way to become a web developer, /g/?
Is it true that going to school for web development is a huge waste of time and money?
Huge waste, learn on codeacademy
>>51261809
>not sure if sarcasm or true advice
>>51261835
Yes, sir!
>>51261809
Why? and what's that?
>>51261865
Because you can learn all the shit they would teach you for free, also it's a website were you learn programming languages online: https://www.codecademy.com
Get Coding, Space /g/entoomen,
You go to school for an education. Sometimes that education is a prerequisite for a career you are interested in, but you will still undergo training in your field after you are fully educated.
You don't go to school for a job. Colleges are not trade schools.
If you want to fart out websites willy nilly then codecademy is perfect for you.
If you want to actually learn about programming and computers then you have a bit more work to do.

How much should I learn before I start looking for jobs? I figured that jobs would be more likely to hire me if I had a degree
>>51261929
That depends on the Job you want to pursue, are you thinking Freelance? Or with some High up Company?
>>51261958
My (very rough) plan for the future is to get some company job, then after some years of experience where I feel comfortable enough I would try to go freelance
>>51262013
Now, it really depends on the Company. Some will accept you if you have a good looking portfolio, some will tell you gtfo till you get a degree, so if you think a possible Company would be one like that, go for a degree.
Also you forgot a Anime Picture.

What are you asking these questions on 4chan? Aren't there better places on the Internet?
>>51262122
I can just feel you implying reddit in this post
OH SHIT
Go to school for your degree.
Make shit in your spare time to actually learn things and do projects.
>>51262171
What did I tell you newfriend?
Next time listen.
Now to answer OP`s question we have a web developer general on here I'm sure you can find an archive it has a lot of great tips for even complete beginners.
>>51262272

Only those related to to OPs topic will stay. All others are shit posting.

But that's a lie, especially in programming. Every resource for learning is up for grabs online. The only real thing a school can give you is guidance.
For a company that does interviews , a degree is a good filter to make sure the person you hire is knowledgeable in a subject matter.
This immediately gives people with academic degreea preferential treatment and makes people race to get degrees for nothing other than to get a job in a field rather than a pursuit of knowledge.
To become a doctor, you get a medical degree. To become a lawyer, you get a law degree. Computer Science is one of those fields where it's not a mandatory demand, but people much prefer those who have a certificate of qualification, and a degree is exactly that.
>>51261779
>going to school for web development
that's like attending a special school so you can become a janitor
>>51261779
Go 2 Web.
Start Developing
>>51262314
Janitor, you are doing your job wrong, you cant let people know you are one.
Is OP still even here?
>>51262334
Consider this your final warning.
>>51262328
talk about power trip
Given that there are anime pictures up, I think the message is actually pretty clear that bitching about anime pictures is what's actually not allowed.
>>51261779
I wouldn't go and pay someone to teach me if the limit on my career was to be a web developer. You could easily teach yourself.
I'm on the edge of posting Anime to see how long the ban will be
OP, I think you should just do codeacademy and get some projects done to see if you like it.
>>51262372
You guys recommend me similar to this job that are better?
>>51262377
FEEL THE BAN
>>51262377

I'm only saying there are better places to ask if you want a serious discussion.
That isn't to say there are no competent people here on /g/. But reading the catalog should give you an indication of what to expect (and if that didn't clue you in then maybe the replies ITT will).
Good luck.

See http://www.sitepoint.com/full-stack-developer/
Basically it boils down to knowing how to accomplish tasks at each layer of a web application right down from the system administration and database configuration through the layers - Java, PHP, Python, up to the javascripty hipster front-end.

>Java, PHP, Python
I meant pick one by the way, I know how you autists will think otherwise.
>>51262484

idk sempai desu you should just git gud and send out massive amounts of spam loosely resembling a resume until you trick someone somewhere out there into believing you deserve to be able to buy food and shelter but it isn't like that money is actually just a bad joke that we play on each other it's a mad world idfk what I'm gonna do so I can't very well tell you what to ttyl god bless sempai desu kek

Full stack would be harder due to needing to know about every layer on the server. However, more skills means you can bill for labor on more parts of the process == more pay. Pretty much, focus on one part and then learn about the other layers as a result. For example learning front end will make you need to learn how to set up a hosting account to put the front end on. Therefore learning a thing or two about Apache in the process.
