Was going to get a non-k 6700 but I couldn't find one for a reasonable price in my country so I got a 6700K. Going to upgrade mobo and ram to ddr4 maybe next year, since I had a very specific budget. Also gpu is 295x2.
Does the job, might upgrade gpu at some point though, 2gb of v-ram is at times annoying with having to use lower quality textures.

Change the CPU to q6600, and change the GPU.
For q6600 you will need an aftermarket cooler.

So far the only games I've run into that I can't play are ARK and SOMA.
ARK because it's just an unoptimized piece of shit that's barely playable even on a GTX 980.
SOMA almost runs fine, but it occasionally chokes to death, I assume this is because I don't have an SSD and it freaks out if it can't load things fast enough on the fly.
Other than those two, no issues at all with video games, GTAV ran fine at mid-high settings at 1920x1080, MGSV happily chugs along too also at mid-high settings.

Tried changing the settings from max to low, made no difference at all.
The game runs smoothly like 70% of the time, but then it drops to like 5 fps out of fucking nowhere for 10-30 seconds. I suspect it just really wants an SSD.

You really just need a mobo+CPU, and maybe a SSD. Either get a 4690k+Z97, 6600k+Z170, or wait for Zen. 4690+H97 works too if you aren't going to overclock.
