http://www.ghacks.net/2015/11/08/mozilla-plans-to-remove-support-for-heavyweight-themes-in-firefox/

>Mozilla announced yesterday that it plans to remove heavyweight theme support from Firefox as part of the organization's great or dead initiative.

>Benjamin Smedberg, Sr. Engineering Manager at Mozilla, stated in the bug report that heavyweight themes can do "arbitrary styling and replace chrome packages" but did not list reasons for Mozilla's decision on the bug tracking site.

>One likely reason for the change is Mozilla's plan to move away from giving extensions -- and themes -- full control over the browser. Another that complete themes are not overly popular. Only three complete themes have more than 100,000 users each.

The top 10 themes on AMO have 895,690 users combined, yet Mozilla considers that a minority undeserving of support because being a Chrome clone is what they consider "great" and being unique, open, and customizable is what they consider "dead".

Every single fucking time this company introduces/announces a big change, it always shits all over what the original purpose of Firefox was. I'm seriously considering switching to Pale Moon at this point before I have to do it out of rage because SJWzilla finally destroyed the usability of the best browser there ever was.

It's just themes, who cares. That being said having the chat IM thing in with Firefox means something bad is going on. I think the original Firefox people are being pressured by the FBI, Jews, Illuminati to make their browser suck or else they will magically die in accidents.

You people are missing the goddamn point. The reason I'm (OP) upset is not because they're removing support for complete themes. I don't even use a complete theme. The reason is because they keep removing functionality that's been essential to Firefox's distinguishment from Chrome for a while now and this is another aspect of the customization and privacy (comparable to Chrome) that I love about Firefox being gutted.

No it does not. Stylish will still work, until the full switch to WebExtensions, but they have claimed that they will add APIs to allow Stylish to work then as well.
>>
>>51258628
This is why they are killing it. Because, since they moved to the update-every-fucking-week schedule, themes were being broken on a very regular basis, and the system requires theme devs to manually update the theme to state that it is compatible with new versions even if nothing changed in the newer versions to break it.

They crippled the theme support ages ago, and are now considering finishing it off just as soon as everyone stopped using complete themes and started using Stylish/CSS themes.
>>
>>51258765
Yes, until Web Extensions kills that, but they claim they will work with addon devs to have an API to allow it even then.

At this point, who is their target audience?

They had the powerusers, but they've fucked the browser up so bad that group isn't interested anymore and if any powerusers are still using FF, they're almost certainly just waiting for a semi-decent alternative to switch too at this point.

So they try I assume to target normalfags and those people already using chrome by becoming a chrome clone, yet why would normalfags who most likely don't even care about what browser they're using switch from chrome to an inferior chrome clone?

Usually you can find some kind of sensible reason for changes, but FF, I just don't know maybe their HQ is just an echo-chamber for their shit ideas.

Millennials are computer illiterate as a rule. Being able to use Facebook to stalk, or being about to use Tinder to fuck a different cocksleeve a few times per week, does not equal computer literacy.

I think computer literacy peaked with people born between the mid 70s and the very beginning of the 90s.
>>
>>51260548
You're forgetting that older generations by and large don't even know how to do that. Most elderly people don't even know how to turn a computer own. Most baby boomers can barely type at 30 wpm. Gen X is only moderately less competent than millennials.

You're just a fucking autist who programmed and compiled your own Gentoo installation and coded every program you use on it in C++.

millinials, as you call them, may know how to use apps, but they don't know how to think, they have an extremely low sense of work ethic, and an unnaturally high sense of entitlement. a perfect storm, a recipe for disaster, designed to fail, or become obsolete. combined with yolo'ing they'll fizzle out. but there's always hope and a chance that they'll buck the fuck up.

I think the main reason that millennials can't learn shit about using a computer these days is that every program is a special snowflake. You have programs with the WordStar toolbar approach, you have programs with ribbons, you have hamburger-oriented UIs, and you have programs that were clearly geared toward phones, you have programs where buttons look exactly the same as hyperlinks, you have programs that abandon the scrollbar metaphor (and this is just in four different MS programs). Browsers are of course completely fucked up Chrome clones now too; some of the weirdest and least consistent UIs of all.

There are no consistent metaphors to learn like there was when we learned how2puter.

>you're a sperg
>but i'm not a sperg beacause i know only the very basics about a computer (still more than all thoes old people though)

honestly, you really should learn how to program. you'll feel better about yourself, and won't have to dump all your self worth into the fact that you can google something faster than some "old person"

which brings me to yet another point about "millennial", and their problems. Googling something is not the same as having knowledge on a topic. You can't google everything you need for success. Believe it or not, there are still things that you can't just look up or reference when you think you need them. It's called "the illusion of knowledge". Just because something is bouncing around in your mind's short term memory after you look it up for a few days, doesnt mean that you've "learned" it. Learning something requires repetition, recall, and explaining it to other people in your own words. Once you've truly mastered a topic then you can compartmentalize that knowledge, and use it as a building block to learn other things.

Why am I going off on what seems to be a tangent? Well, it's because the so called millennials, and by that i don't mean every person born after an arbitrary date, I mean the people who have a smug air of superiority about their own rudimentary knowledge on a particular range of subjects, and therefore believe they are capable of discussing or debating, or in extreme cases, asserting about the aforementioned topics.

>>
>>51258556

>>
>>51260832
The millennials ostensibly completely lack this ability for actually learning things. It's as if it actually hurts their brains to practice spaced recall. But that's irrelevant because they would never have the time to practice anything that would lead to real learned knowledge; usually they are too pre-occupied with whatever ephemeral and vapid fad is captivating them at the time. Social media, and the commercialisation of internet in general play a minor part, but I don't blame these entities, because there are alternatives and choices. You can choose to spend your time in time-sinks, or you can choose to spend it on something prudent. I blame the individual for not realizing that the onus lies with them.
>>
>>51260874

i used to use firefox, for many years. but then chrome come with V8, and the whole web needed javascript, so not only was the layout super fast, but the js performance was *ke kech* (like the armor)

i just tried to use the firefox developer version a few days ago, genuinely wanting to get off of chrome, but i was disappointed.

i don't like the way firefox lays out it's user interface. it's bigger than chromes, and the way it comes off to me is it's not putting the content first. it still wants to be like "look, i'm here" i just want it to be out of the way, and i *dont* want to use a "reading mode" either, becasue that's not my workflow. generally i'm browsing, and have some text editors and a terminal open. i don't want to continually switch between "reading mode" and my workspace. but i digress on that aspect.

i've heard good things about Servo, the new layout engine by mozilla research, written in rust. if it's really good, *and* they make the UI more like chrome in terms of minimalism, as well as the back end UI (administration, etc) i would like it better.

generally, i think the chromium way of doing things with a minimalist ui is superior to the FF/gecko way anyway. if there were a chromium with Servo as the layout engine, and v8 js performance, i'd use that. hope someone on the dev team sees this. wish you luck

>and the way it comes off to me is it's not putting the content first
Look at this, does this look like a "look, i'm here" interface. this isn't even an old theme, is the current one with a web add-on.

gecko is pretty fast. is great for opening new paages, returning to thhe previous page, and for its super smooth scrolling, give it a try.

Pale Moon? Once Mozilla moves away from Gecko to Servo, Pale Moon project can't backport stuff anymore.

I am either using Otter Browser or Vivaldi, depending which browser does not betray it's users!

Blink as an engine has a future, what Mozilla tries to create has none.

Sadly we move to a future where Google decides what is standard and what is draft.

We are already there partly. So why not giving in as it is anyway of no use. Still better than using anything official Mozilla, as they have no problem with betraying their userbase over and over again. Same like the fags of Opera had no trouble with such a "business decision"

>>
>>51262409
Friend, you do not have a clue do you? Goanna=Gecko - just renamed because of copyright issues. But it is still the same old Firefox 24 engine.

Without being able to easily port over security fixes from bugzilla, there would be no Pale Moon around. And Servo and Gecko/Goanna are 2 different things.

Once Servo is around, Pale Moon with Goanna is meeting it's end! Just wait and see!

Do you really believe the Pale Moon guys have the manpower to write bugfixes and features on their own? No! All they do is take code from Bugzilla, see if it can be used with Pale Moon and then refactoring it if possible. If it can't it can not be used. It is as simple as this!
>>
>>51262480
So what's wrong with staying with Goanna and continually working it? Remember that the Palemoon guys are not doing new features. There will eventually be a mature version that only needs updating for security flaws.

>>
>>51262509
There is nothing wrong with it. My point is just that it is only a limited time possible seeing from now on. At some point there is no going forward anymore.

Features which can not be ported over because too complex:

1)MSE for Youtbe (not EME)
2)New Javascript engine
3)Promises

The list of what can not be ported forward and is essential for today's pages is much more longer than this list. Just some famous examples!

And more incompatibilities will arise. Stay as long with Pale Moon as it is working, but be assured that it will not be forever!

Google Chrome i would never use. Google Chrome is the reason why Mozilla is doing all this what they are doing.

Without Google, no reason for Mozilla to be jealous because they have not that much users like Chrome has.

Mozilla should not try to compete with Google, there is no need for fighting a war they have lost from the beginning.

Instead they should be happy that power users once have chosen Firefox as state of the art, but that is for Mozilla not enough anymore. Simple fags are for them of more importance, but i am still waiting for the tons of Chrome users switching over to Firefox since Australis landed.

Guess what, non came over! How pathetic is that! And intead of understanding that that did not work out, they try to remove as much features until Chrome users come over in masses, but guess what...

If you think FF memory management is bad, Chrome does it even worse.

It uses vastly more memory in total by running tabs as individual processes at 50 MB each, and forces every tab to load on session restoration whether you like it or not when FF makes that an option.

My FF session on average has 100 tabs, with 20 tabs active at one time. I'll take FF with 1GB memory usage over Chrome with 20 tabs alone.
>>
>>51262708
The Palemoon team doesn't have to reimplement MSE, all they have to do is learn how the class interfaces to MSE work and then rip out all that code. Mozilla does the hard work of perfecting MSE, Palemoon only need to learn what code interfaces that the MSE class(es) need to touch.

This isn't a co-incidence. Employing women, trannies and niggers makes things go to shit.

A lot of women and niggers work on OpenSUSE.. It's fucking awful.
A lot of White men work on chromium (Even ones paid by Google who are also Gentoo developers) and it's great.
Microsoft hires sand niggers for non business/enterprise and it sucks. If you're paying with business though you get straight through to white men who know what the fuck they are doing.

None of this is coincidence.
