/g/, I need a new music player.

Been using a Clip+ with rockbox for years, but it got all crashy and now I can't boot to rockbox or sansa firmware (they freeze during startup). As such I can't connect to the device in any way. I really loved the thing, and I just can't justify buying a new one as it's $50 for something so outdated.

I'd like something with the same sort of open functionality, preferably something rockbox compatible. FLAC/MP3 is all that matters, mic and radio unimportant. No hard drives, solid state only please.

What do you use for music? No phones, please.

Tried fucking everything.

-holding left during rockbox boot
-holding select during sansa boot
-plug to start sansa, unplug during logo screen

Rockbox freezes during v3.10 splash
Sansa freezes during "flower" logo splash

Currently trying to run down the battery, but its hard as it shuts down after ~5 minutes of idling on splashscreen.

Can't connect it to my computer, can't abort normal boot. All this together effectively softlocks it. A goddamn shame.

Get a used iPod 5.5G and install the latest version of rockbox on it. Mines a tank, and holds 80gb

Why not just use your android phone? Honestly what does an ancient obsolete mp3 player have that your modern note 4/ moto g doesn't? You also get to play Opus files on android phones as well.

I don't know apple products at all. Is that solid state? Battery life is very important to me.

You could hunt down a good old iPod Classic. I don't have mine on me at the moment, but it held 120 GB IIRC. You just have to patch some things to make it work with outside sources.

I don't own a smartphone. Call me old fashioned, but the clip+ is my sort of device. Small, simple, huge potential for features (rockbox), extreme battery life.

I like a device that does one thing very well. Modern smartphones do many things but very poorly IMO, so they're not for me.
>>
>>51257517
Rockbox completely un-rekt the battery. Mine goes two weeks on a charge.

Not solid state, hard drive. If you want solid state Rockbox player get a sansa e200r.

Ex-rockbox dev here.

That wasn't me, but just go look up the iPod video 5.5g on rockbox wiki.

Needs a patch as well as rockbox, patch is ipodpatcher. Might have been what other anon was referring to.

I tracked down a black NWZ-A15 walkman (apparently black is discontinued for the US market, had to get one shipped from Hong Kong through amazon but it showed up in half the time they said it would) runs you about $250 has about 15 gigs, but has a micro SD slot so its a non issue. I love the thing, plays FLACs and makes MP3s sound pretty good too.

It's the future though, smartphones will soon replace nearly everything except maybe tablets, desktops and servers. x86 phones are gaining popularity and people have even found ways to run windows 7 on them.

MP3 players are considered old and ancient technology, you gotta let them go anon. You should give a smartphone a try soon, they perform many things nicely if you put in the effort to understand them. Battery life for music playback on most 3,000 mAh phones is like 24 hours+ too.

Work gave me an iPhone 4s and I hate the goddamn thing. Can't type, can't even copy and paste properly. It's bulky, it's fragile, and it can't touch the functionality of rockbox.

The thing I hate the most is that I have to charge it EVERY DAY. I thought it was broken when they gave it to me. What a fuckin' pain. 24+ hours? I'm going to need at least a week, bruh.

I don't like using smartphones. I don't want a smartphone. I want something for my tunes. That's it. Please don't derail thread.
>>
>>51257649
I had the old one and then I lost it when I moved so I decided to upgrade. New one is almost the same in every way except that there is no touch screen, and everything that made the old one good is even better in the new one.

Sorry, dude. I like a device that does one thing well. My cell calls and texts. My music player plays music. combined they take up less volume, have way more battery life, less mass, are much more durable, than a smartphone. Not to mention I could buy a new one of each every month for the price of a smartphone contract.

Sandisk infuriates me. Years ago they created one of the greatest mp3 players at an amazing price point, discontinue it, and proceed to release garbage that can't even compare to the Clip+ (it doesn't help that half of the Clip+ appeal was that it had a stable Rockbox to make up for Sansa's awful native firmware). Spend five minutes on Amazon and you'll see thousands begging to bring back the Clip+, whose price point is now approaching twice its original value.
>>
>>51258700
And before anyone brings up the expired chip, it's not just that. The build quality and firmware of the newer models are either worse than or roughly equal to the Clip+.

The Sansa clip is worth it. Just buy a refurbished one for like $25.

>>
>>51257555
Why is the layout for the clip+ so fucking retarded?
>go to artists

>second selection random

I'm using a 64gb card, you only need to format it as FAT32 and you're good to go.

>>51257880
A smartphone battery doesn't last a week.
>>
I suppose with all the clip+ users in here it'd be a good place to ask:

How do I unbrick this thing? I've troubleshot and worked the forums all day.

Rockbox freezes on startup splash
Sansa does the same
See first posts for more details

At this point I don't care if I have to format. I just want to be able to interface with it.

I'm starved for space for music on my portables. I have an ipod touch 4th gen 64GB. All my music is mp3 320kbps CBR converted from FLAC source material on my desktop. I'm considering converting to a different codec and or bitrate to try to save more space. I don't have very many options. Is AAC better than mp3 and should I be using VBR instead of CBR?

I will not get a Clip or any other portable media device. Only the ipod can interface with my car stereo over USB allowing me to use the media buttons and search through it while driving. This is a deal-breaker. There is technically an Android app so it can work with Android phones but it's a buggy mess because apparently Kenwood doesn't give a shit about Android users. I do not want to use a device over AUX as once again I cannot use the stereo to change songs.

Lossless formats are not supported and I don't have the space anyway. Vorbis is unfortunately not supported either.
>>
>>51259651

>>
>>51259681

Convert to AAC VBR. 0.5 or 0.6 for quality setting. Anything above that is pretty much placebo (convert to a bunch of different qualities and do a blind test in foobar or something)

That is considerably shorter than the A15.It gets 60-80 depending on music type.

I would say iPod if you plan on opening it and sticking a new battery and SSD in it, A15 otherwise.

How is it outdated and how is that relevant? What changed about your music habits that made it so outdated? Did your music files get bigger, or do they need more processing power?

The argument that cramming more features into one device makes it unable to perform those functions well is pure shit, lol. Did cars get worse at driving when they got automatic transmissions or antilock brakes? Did airplanes stop flying when the first jet engine was built? Shut the fuck up.
