That's a Rosewill RK9000 under there. Blue Cherry MX switches. Had it since 2010. I wish I had gone with these cool mint colored keycaps I saw on.Massdrop. The ones pictured are from Royal Kludge.

What, the Varmilo PBT set? You made the right call; the Varmilos are super thin and have a weird slippery coating.

I like the purple RKs more than the reds, though.

any reason not to jump on the buckle spring unicomp? 5 hours left
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/unicomp-ultra-classic?mode=guest_open
>>
>>51254355
I had to check, but yeah - the Varmillos are the ones I was talking about. Good to know about the coating, thanks for that - this RK set feels great, I have to admit.

I opted for the reds since the RK9000 had a red plate underneath the keys, but it's not noticable, and since I don't have any backlighting, the red on the keys is a little too dark I guess. Agreed on the purple, those are sexy.

Quick noobie question for whoever's lurking - I dropped a heavy thing on the numpad section of my keyboard, and now some number keys register two characters at once. Should be as easy as replacing the switches on the problem keys, right?

Do you know that here in glorious Japan, nobody uses the direct Kana input? Hence your keyboard is dumber than a blank keycap keyboard. It is "using a layout different than the one printed on the keys" dumb.

Yea, it doesn't even have support for the rest of the JP layout, like the moved symbols and input change keys. It is pretty terrible.

As for the rising sun flag, it is still used in some places in Japan.

And so is the swastika (reversed) for that matter.

>>
I think most of us here agree that money spent on artisans is better spent on entire keycap sets, or even other customizations like switches, cables, or leds. I personally view artisans as a gaudy customization that usually lacks class. A click clack escape key is pretty much the only artisan customization I approve of because of its subtle design.

Varmilos without thinking twice. Keycool is ok at best, their PBT caps are very thin, lasered fonts and OEM profile. Case quality is bad, it seems to be white painted, while the case plastic itself is a vary light grey.

Magichink is a gamble, but its probably no beter than all the other chink stuff with the same case (Ajazz, EBlue, and all the aliexpress clones). Thin as hell case, no quality controll at all, crappy caps, cheap leds that will burn fast, etc.

Varmilos on the other hand have great quality control (same factory that did leopold FC700R), a very nice soldering job, and medium-thick cherry profile stock caps.
>>
>>51262632
If you're going for the left layout, you're probably better off buying a Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless. They recently dropped to 9.5k yen at Sofmap.

No backlighting though, if that matters. I would look into Varmilos if it weren't for the fact that I've just bought 2 Poker 3s.

Also, it's advisable not to skimp on your keyboard especially if you're going to be using it a lot, since you definitely won't want it to shit the bed when you need it most.

TKL - CM Storm Quickfire

What's the difference from a V2 with MX Clear switches?
I guess it's just the LEDs and the lack of custom keys.

If WASD release an aluminium version, maybe I'd get it.
Ordering a keyboard from the US to Europe is pretty expensive with shipping, VAT, and whatnot.
>$165 keyboard
>$45 FedEx international economy shipping

>>51266439

It was designed to prevent jamming on typewriters by placing the most used letters and frequent combinations far apart, hence slowing you down and increase finger travel.
>>
>>51266497
Only the leds and the plate color (white vs black).

Althou on their website, they state WASD PCB is single sided, which I dont think is very good in terms of long term duration. Its the same difference from a quickfire to a filco.

Speaking from a purely technical point of view, why don't you want to switch to a more efficient layout? ANSI is objectively more efficient in terms of important key placement. Its not even that much of a difference to ISO, most people can pick it up in less than a day.
>>
>>51266636
Part right, but still wrong. It was designed to prevent jamming by placing common letter combinations apart from each other, but the intention was not to "slow down" the typist. If this were true, why, or how, could the fastest typists in the world use qwerty?
> There is also evidence that, aside from the issue of jamming, placing often-used keys farther apart increases typing speed
>>
>>51267526

I did not say it was designed for the purpose of slowing you down, but that follows logically from the fact that you have much more finger travel than necessary. Also, the fastest typists in the world often use alternative layouts like dvorak or colemak. I think this woman still has the official world record:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NndiiezGkNY

I've been typing dvorak for about 3 weeks now. Used to be at ~90-100 wpm, and currently at 40 wpm. My experience is that it feels and flows a lot better than qwerty, and I fully expect to regain my speed within a couple of months. 9/10, would not go back.
>>
>>51268394
There's not "more finger travel than necessary". Every single letter is within 1 unit of a home key. Regardless of layout, "finger travel" is exactly the same on every board. By putting common combinations apart from each other, like "th", it encourages hand alternation which increases young speed, using only one finger per hand instead of two fingers on one hand.

got it in mail today.
1990, original white alps. backslash was dead, thought it was soldering but turned out switch was defective, that thing connecting 2 plates was missing. my attempts at fixing it were kinda meh, managed to get them to connect when pressing but only in my hand, not with keypress so just changed it with scroll locks interior, i'd rather miss scroll lock than backslash.

wanted to pull keycaps, let them soak overnight, maybe retr0bright it too, but basically ripped a switch open when pulling escape, either plastic is too weak already or keycaps got stuck, managed to glue it back as no moving part got destroyed (thanks for plate mounting, without that i wouldnt have a chance to put it back together). so i guess it'll be yellow.

There absolutely is more finger travel on qwerty. Just think about how frequently you use the letters your fingers (should) rest on.

The 8 most frequently used letters in the english language are e, t, a, o, i, n, s, h, and they add up to ~65 percent of the letters you'll ever use. On a qwerty keyboard you'll find 2 of those letters among your home keys, whereas on a dvorak layout you have 7/8. On qwerty your home keys are used 25% of the time; on dvorak it's 60%.

So after 3 months I finally about finished. Whatcha thing /mkg/?

Custom cables coming soon.

Still need two yellow deep space swirls(to replace artisans) and a 1.5 deep space shift and enter (not even sure the enter exists).

I kinda want a purple aluminum plate, but only place that sells it wants $110 and only sells the full case.
>>
>>51272754
fuck you why will no one sell my deep space
>>
>>51272908

SP sells the core and modifiers. You can make a normal standard layout board with what they have for sale. All the cool stuff is sold out though.

I scrounged that from multiple sets and second hand sales.

The planetary caps are just leftovers from the SP Grab Bag.

This keyboard:
>>51272754

Is green switches.

I love the damn thing, nice firm resistance, solid click on actustion. It is the best switch type I have used since buckling springs.
>>
>>51273764
how would you compare buckling springs to your greens?
>>
will i ever see a keyboard like this again?
white 60% with the arrows on the bottom right?
>>
>>51273791

To be homest I haven't had a chance to use them side by side. My buckling spring board is 7,000 miles away.

Going entirelly from memory (and possibly completely wrong), the biggest difference that comes to mind is the lack of that spring ping sound. I also think that green resistance remains somewhat strong after actuation, while the BS does not.

Reviews aren't bad. 15 review, 11 of which are 5/5, the others are 4/5. I didn't know we stocked this product, never seen it in my own free time searching for a new mechanical.

I was personally leaning towards either a Logitech G710, Corsair K70 or Das Keyboard. Any thoughts or are those brands too mainstream on this thread?

I never really considered Rosewill but I tested out a few of their keyboards recently and they didn't seem bad on the surface. Tested Corsairs and they felt way better, but no Blues to test. My lady's been against me getting a mechanical due to noise and the MX Silents were too loud for her lol

It still sounds nice, I just miss the spring ping.

As for sales, not really. If you don't mind waiting to black friday you might get lucky, but if it was me i'd just order it now.

Key feel will mostly be due to the keycap material and profile, and the switch type

Also, Corsair has a history of LEDs that become faulty easily and nonstandard layouts, so finding aftermarket caps will be difficult. Some of their mechanical keyboards aren't fully mechanical as well, having rubberdomes for keys that see less use like the F row. Many on /mkg/ won't recommend Corsair.

If you want silent switches, you'd want a heavy non-clicky switch with O rings and sound dampener brackets if you're willing to fork out extra for these mods

>>
>>51276063
What do you mean repairable? If it's replacing a dead or sticky key you'd need a whole new membrane layer because they're not individual soldered on switches/buckling springs against membrane
