What would /g/ do with a 15 year old PC?

I've been thinking about removing windows xp and putting a linux distro on it but i'm stuck from there on out. It has a 2.66ghz pentium 4, 512mb ram and an 80GB hard drive.

I have an old webcam? Are there any off the shelf programs that could turn it into a home security system?

I have a 14 years old computer with a P4. Nothing wrong with that.

Thats actually pretty decent for a Linux box

The PC can't run Lubuntu. I have the same PC with 384 MB of RAM and it just isn't enough to browser.

>>51248807 here. I just checked again. The 2.66 GHz models are all but 15 years old. Holy shit, that's long ago. I stand corrected.

What distros are /g/ approved? I have to say though I don't want any autist-tier distros that require hours of configuration.

I wouldn't use it for anything in production, the capacitors are probably ready to blow and the HDD probably won't last much longer, if it isn't failing already.

Just dick around with Linux Mint, I guess.

Have you tried any true lightweight distros?

OP here. The more I think about it, I might just wipe it securely and give it to charity. I don't want the hassle of fucking around with it desu. How do i do a 7 pass wipe on xp?

Nothing until it's 18, at least.

That's like, when P4 1.6GHz was common right? I found an old box in my grandfathers basement a few years ago for a Pentium III 800 MHz chip from late 90s.

More than enough for a Linux setup if you don't want to keep XP on it.

>>51251143
2000 was the age of the Pentium III 800-1 GHz and the first Pentium 4s running at 1.3-1.5 GHz

HP Pavilion?

I had one too, specs were similar but the cpu was Athlon XP 2000something+ (single core 1.6Ghz).

Ubuntu 9.10 ran surprisingly well on it.
