What iPad should I get my dad for Christmas? I literally know nothing about iPads.
Before I get greentexted back to the stoneage, he uses iPhone and I assume there's an account you can share across the 2.

yes u can share your apple id across devices. that way you dont have to pay for things twice or setup other things again. this should be entered upon setting up the device and not saved for later to avoid issues, so make sure he knows how the fuck to get in to his own damn account.
if hes already got the iphone, then the only reason to even have an ipad would be because the screen is bigger, so you better get the largest ipad that you can. i think apple is about to come out with a very large screened ipad for the holiday season any day now. its ca;;ed the ipad pro.

also, make sure that his iphone is running the newest ios, with all apps updates, and is set to back up to icloud.
if there is too much difference here compared to the ipad (which will be running the latest of everything), then he might have a hard time getting apple's "it just werx" seamlessly working

if it turns out that his iphone is too old and out of date, then it might make more sense to gift him with a new iphone. maybe the one with that huge ass 5.5 inch screen, so that he doesnt end up needing a tablet.
