xfce is the most reasonable option. If you aren't into heavy tweaking and theming Mate or Cinnamon will also do the job.

I'd tolerate how fucking ugly Material Design is if they offered a lightweight and functional DE. But any people so in love with Material Design that they want to make an entire DE with it are way more concerned with looks than functionality.

I haven't just heard of it by the way. I was pretty excited when I read it was in Qt/QML... but material design is visually offensive and complete shit for a desktop.
