Chromebook users: Do you like it? Why?
>>
I installed gen2 on mine
>>
>>51236492
I'm not a user, but I've considered becoming one.

Chromebooks are not particularly cheaper than real laptops with similar specs.

On top of that, you're monetarily supporting google and the thin-client botnet project.

So no thanks for me.

> how to use a chromebook properly
>>
>>51236492
It's fast, cheap, and does everything I need a laptop to do. I understand people who want a laptop that's basically a portable desktop, but I just need something with good battery life and web browsing.
>>
>>51236630
That's called a smart phone.
>>
>>51236520
can all chromebooks run linux natively now or are some still locked down where you gotta flash bios or run chrubuntu or some shit? just curious if I need to look for anything certain if I get one
>>
>>51236679
get a intel processor, but if you want to run linux anyway better would be a normal laptop instead of a chromeshit.
>>
>>51236492
It's simple, light, can use Linux side-by-side. Keyboard is comfy. Only reason not to like it is botnet meme

I love mine, it was 160$ and i can dick around with linux all day on it.

Why i love it over anything else though? Shit never goes wrong with it, it never makes me angry.
>no fucking fan noise
>no overheating
>no lag
>no crashes on anything ever
>no retarded installations
>no chance of viruses, spyware, malware
>its easy to use

Ive always had issues with windows laptops, from XP to 10, they all pissed me off in one way or another, whether that be due to compatability issues, retarded installation wizards, pushed and or forced updates, issues with viruses, extra software requirements to make it pleasant to use, and worst of all, i hated fans and heat issues. It doesnt matter what im doing on this chromebook, its silent and cool. With any other laptop ive owned, even ones with shitty celeron processors just like this chromebook, they all had fans which were on 24/7 and got stupidly loud if you tried to do anything other than browse the internet.

This Acer Cb3 was 160$ with free shipping from amazon, i get:
>2gb of RAM
>a 2.6ghz celeron processor
>16gb SSD
>11.6" screen
>8 hour battery life at 75% screen brightness
>1 hour charge time from 0-100%

Crouton allowed me to install Ubuntu in a kinda of virtual partition, with literally 1 command, entries for a username and password, and of course going into developer mode which took about 5 minutes and 7 keystrokes.

Now i can make shitty XFCE color schemes all day and nobody can stop me.

I have never been mad at this computer, it does nothing wrong, when it updates it downloads and installs everything, and then when you restart it, the updates take effect. There is no "restart now to finish installing updates" or even a prompt to install these updates, it just does it and it doesnt effect me at all.

Rebooting it takes literally 4 seconds from power off to login screen, maybe another 2 seconds after you log in.

Best 160$ i have ever spent.
>>
Use it for college.

Nice and light, battery lasts a long time. I'm happy with it.
>>
>>51236805
in all honestly if you want to use Linux all the time instead of ChromeOS, then ur better buying a cheap laptop and put a proper OS on it and configure it right.
>>
>>51236880
But i like both, i use ChromeOS for shitposting on /tech/ and /g/ (though primarily /g/ because /tech/ is full of assholes), watching youtube videos, basic coding and other browser shit.

Then i use the ubuntu croot for games, tinkering with the terminal and trying to learn Lua.

It was just cheap and it fit my needs well, i know that plenty of other laptops would fit the bill but im really just put off anything made by Dell/HP/Etc with windows in that price range.

Is that the best selling 11" white one?
>>
I got one used for like $80 and then installed linux. I like it because it's like 2lbs vs. my old laptop which was like 7lbs. Nice for uni
>>
>>51236980
Yeah, the optimal chromebook according to alot of comparisons on other tech sites.
Its the best value for what you get out of it, is the most durable with the best consumer experience overall. Of course, within its price range, 100-200$

There are better chromebooks but for 160$ its pretty dank.

you gunna ruin yo gainz bruh
>>
>>51236964
Not that much if I'm honest, but it is useful. You can use it in certain stances for watching movies or whatever. The keyboard is amazing despite the size.

Really the only thing I dislike is that it's ARM, but oh well, it was a bargain
>>
you guys are shilling to maximum levels but it's actually very convincing and i'm probably going to buy one instead of bothering with another windows laptop for university.

These things can't possibly be that durable for the prices they go for. Am I wrong? What software can you actually use? Is it only stuff in the google play store or whatever?
>>
>>51237385
Generally the lack of a windows fee allows them to put in a higher quality screen, build, screen, etc.
>>
>>51237385
Ive put mine through basic wear and tear, dropping it off tables, having corners of the screen get smacked on things, getting drops of water under the keys, etc.
It holds up well, theyre usually made of a flexible plastic, so the chance of it cracking is minimal. There are no moving internal parts so problems like scratched HDD platters are nonexistent.

Software wise, anything you can do on Linux you can do on a croot. Anything in the google store or anything that can be done in the chrome browser is available. This includes photo editing like pixlr, some autodesk products, music players, various text editors, etc.
It has all standard google programs like Docs, Drive, etc.

With the ubuntu croot + wine im able to play alot of games like Terraria, Hotline Miami, starbound, etc.

>>51237385
I shilled ChromeOS on 8ch's /tech/ for a while, so effectively that i managed to get 14 other people to either mimic me ironically, or shill alongside me.
"we told normies to 'install gentoo' and they did, in the form of ChromeOS"
>>
>>51237555
except having a decent layout on partitions and security most likely on linux cause they think it's all secure out of the box.

That's the best part about chromeos

already did, nerd git gud

I have a ARM chromebook. Despite the slight buyers remorse I have for it due to no HW acceleration in Linux, battery life is really great.

I can leave it closed while it's still on for a few days and still have around half the battery life yet.
>>
My highschool issused the junior and senior class them. I have no problems with the on, but a toy gun from the dollar store is built better.
>>
Played with a chromebook pixel. Easily the best constructed laptop I've ever used. Makes macbook's look like a toy to be honest.
>>
>>51239371
>a toy gun from the dollar store is built better.
you would know
>>
>>51239436
I've been thinking about getting the chromebook pixel but now I'm not so sure with the surface pro 4 out now.

But I mostly use my laptop to web browse and everything else I can't do on chrome os I can do on linux + an 128gb SD card so I'm not sure.
The SP4 + the keyboard will cost more than the base model.
>>
>>51239489

If you actually plan on using it to draw on or take/annotate handwritten notes extensively then the SP4 is worth it. Otherwise get another device.
>>
>>51237198
if you've already got a windows desktop, go for it. you'll have no regrets
>>
>>51239595
oh, and get an Acer.
>>
I've got the Toshiba Chromebook 2, cost like $260 or so and has a gorgeous IPS screen.

I quite like it, pretty much unbeatable for that price. So many of the cheap windows laptops have garbage screens and I can't stand that shit.
>>
>>51236566
Seriously this. What the fuck even is the point of the higher end models if you're not going to install your own OS and use desktop applications that actually make use of those specs?
>no storage
Actually, what the fuck is the point of buying one at all?
>>
No. I'm too pleb to properly partition my drive for an Arch installation. The Chrome OS partition scheme is confusing as hell and I haven't figured it out yet; sda1 only registers as having two gigs. Not to mention the hardware write protection and the fact that you have to flash a custom BIOS to boot from external media. Totally regret it but I recognize it could've been easier on a different Chromebook.
>>
Tried the Acer Chromebook 11 white in the store and it's....fucking beautiful. Keys are really smooth to use and sensitive to not cause me RSI, the 1366x768 screen lets me insert 50 lines of code enough for my webdev shit and scripting, the dual core is responsive enough and handles heavy javascript written by indians full of memory leaks smoothly, and I am sure I can install arch lunix if I tried on it thru the developer mode interface though chrome os is enough for my needs with a chrome SSH to my VPS or cloud9.io, Gonna buy soon maybe with an external monitor to watch muh turkish mafia series on.
>>
>>51240032

>What's the point in higher end models

In the case of the Pixel, high quality hardware and a polished industrial design that rivals Apple's offerings. The aspect ratio of the display is also pretty nice and slightly edges out retina displays.

> muh hd space

SD cards are fine for media storage which is all people care about when they cry about hd space. If you don't fall within that bucket you're an outlier who cares.
>>
>>51239636

Do you have any problems watching a 1080p60 video on youtube?
>>
>>51236492

yes I like it

because its cheap and does everything I need it to, also its extremely light and the battery lasts forever
>>
>>51236566
If I'm using a low end laptop with 2gb of ram, I would rather be running a light Linux distro on it with no driver issues drivers of windows.

>>51240317
Another thing people don't mention about chrome os is how nice the gestures are.
Especially going backwards and forwards.
