I just switched from oh my zsh to prezto (speed issue, mainly).
The outputs of some commands (less/man) aren't clearing after exiting for some reason, like they did before.
How would I get this feature back? I checked and neither less/man are aliased, and the PAGER variable is just 'less'.

Oh, apparently I was looking in the wrong place. There's a LESS variable in .zprofile that sets the -X and -F flags. Removing those works.

I just ran an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade on Kali because I'm trying to install Nvidia drivers and it was recommended that I should do that first. Now when I log on to Kali, the taskbar(s) and desktop icons are all gone except for the My PC icon (or whatever it's called in Kali). Where did they go?

I'm really disappoint with my battery life on Debian /g/
On windows with powersaving I would get 2 hours 15 minutes.
On debian jessie stable with tlp installed I'm getting 1hour 45 minutes.

You did really, you made a mistake in the guide somewhere because it's not what you have.

This is move it to the right place. You could move it to /usr/bin but it's not good practice to put things there as it is for your package manager mostly.
The problem is the extra directory you created, you shouldn't have directories inside /usr/bin.
A better way to do this would be to create a directory like ~/.bin or ~/bin and add this directory to your $PATH, then you can put screenfetch and any other little scripts you find in there. It's a bit better than putting them in system locations.

It's because your environment is currently set to the "old" /etc/profile read at startup (before edit).
It will work normally on your next session restart.
(understand Xorg session restart if under xdm, or logging out, loggin in with console login+startx invocation).

you should think about what you're reading more. he told you a permanent solution! and he would have told you a better one if you had been more forthcoming about how you installed screenfetch.
however you did it installed a screenfetch directory inside of /usr/bin. /usr/bin is short for user binaries and most of (all?) what is installed there is just the binary executable file. It's done like this because your system is designed to look here (and a couple other places) for files you wish to run when you type them in -- that's why it's called the PATH.
You typed in PATH=whatever inside of your shell, which temporarily changed it. If you did what he said, or added it to your .bashrc or .bash_profile or whatever you use, then it would add your /usr/bin/screenfetch directory to your PATH every time you logged in or started a shell.
You could also fix this by just typing the absolute path when you wanted to run it (/usr/bin/screenfetch/screenfetch), creating a link to the file inside of /usr/bin, or just installing it properly in the first place. You could even just get rid of that and leave the thing in your home dir that looks like it's the same screenfetch folder, and run that one by using its absolute path (~/screenfetch/screenfetch, or whatever). I often do something like this when I have to extract a .tar with some files in it by typing ./screenfetch, explicitly telling bash to run the file in the directory I'm currently in.
If screenfetch is just a single file that you're not installing through some package manager, I'd suggest just leaving it in your home dir or manually placing it in /usr/bin so that you don't muck up your path. Your home directory is yours, don't be scared to leave whatever the fuck you want sitting around in it.

That's good, a lot of the stuff like changing your PATH are unnecessary. Remove what you had, put in somewhere in your PATH. Or add a local bin directory in your home and add that directory to your PATH as described. Don't mess around with /usr/bin, it's not for you to be doing anything with. There is /usr/local/bin, this is meant for your things.

It looks exactly where you tell it to. If it's ambiguous, like if you just type in "ls" in a folder where there's no ls, it looks in your PATH to find it because that's where it's expected for common programs to be kept.
if you type in
./ls
then you're explicitly telling it to look in the "." directory, which means the directory you're currently in. ("..", two dots, means the folder above the one you're currently in). So if you run "./ls", you'll probably just get an error because ls is actually in /bin/ls and not your home directory. The reason why typing "ls" all by itself normally works is because your PATH tells it to look in /bin for files to run and finds ls in there.
just make a symbolic link to screenfetch-dev and pop it in /usr/bin/

from what I've seen/red Xfce, KDE and Gnome are looking good

I don't know if that's important, but I use this laptop only at uni to programm, web surfing and reading PDF's
One last thing, I mentioned earlier that I wanted to move my /home/ folder to another partition just in case I ever want to reinstall my OS or duplicate it as much as possible on another computer.
Is everything, as far as configuration for programs/WMs etc stored here? Presumably it is meaning that I should be able to restore with ease?

Package manager is different and style of release is different. Packages are patched or not patched. The differences are not about looks.

We both know how fucking horrible the package manager is and that it never has anything. I havn't actually done anything insane, the worst I had was a screenfetch-master directory in /usr/local/bin with a symbolic link to its executable in /usr/bin but now I see I could've just moved it up one directory and it would've worked the same.
as for installing/compiling things properly, i still basically have zero idea how to do this. if i can't sudo apt-get install it, or it's not a .deb i'm completely fucked. i had the node.js master directory in my /local/bin too after trying to install it from there having no idea what i was doing and gave up.

To put it another way, I think I might also be getting a 30GB MSATA SSD. Generally speaking I want the OS and Programs to actually run from the SSD for somewhat obvious reasons. Of course due to it's size I want all personal and config files (related to programs) on my HDD.
I'm hoping that if I ever need to format my SSD then restoring my system to how it was (as far as how programs are configured) should be relatively straight forward.

it's not guaranteed to be everything, but it will be most things if not all things
global config stuff that affects all programs and all users are stored in places like /etc or wherever and almost everything is set up so that a specific user can override any of those for their own personal use by changing settings in their home folder
so if a setting you really care about is actually just a global default for all users on that box, then you'll miss it if you only back up your /home

Sorry for another babbys third distro question, but:
I just got a new laptop (Asus UX510).
This windows shite is getting annoying with the blue screens and whatnot.
I have had Ubuntu in the past and used Red Hat a long long time ago.
Can be a lightweight distro, I have time on my hands to experiment too, though. Have used Unity and Gnome as managers, nothing I find particularly great in either. So a change in that would be welcome.
Mostly I need to TeX stuff and sometimes write small programs to do shit for me, I might save the current OS as dual boot for a few vidya.

OK, so, I am still struggling with getting Fedora to install on my new Skylake system. It's been almost a god damn month and I just want to use my computer.
When I install using the UEFI method I get all sorts of fucked up shit going on. The desktop is stuck at 1024x768, for one. GRUB throws a memory error if I select Kernel 4.3 or higher. It will only boot with 4.2.x.
Today I accidentally installed using the old fashioned BIOS method and I was surprised to see the desktop was at 1080p. I booted with the 4.2.x kernel and the i915 parameter and it seemed to use the driver for graphics. I installed kernel 4.3 and GRUB didn't throw the error, but the kernel stopped loading at some point.
I reinstalled using the UEFI method and ran the 4.2.5 kernel with the i915 parameter again. Even though it shows it's using the correct driver for the graphics the desktop is locked to 1024x768.
What the fuck is going on? What should I do? I would rather install using the UEFI method, but for some reason it doesn't work right.
How do I get permission to put fonts in the /usr/share/fonts directory in xfce/openSUSE? Do I just use chmod in the terminal?
Arch newbie here.
Is there an issue with the latest non bin iceweasel package in AUR or is it just me fucking up the installation somehow?
I tried to makepkg it, but it took forever and gave me an error at the end of it.
After that failed attempt I tried to let yaourt take care of it for me, but it also gave me an error.
I updated and later reinstalled all base-devel packages, just to make sure I wasn't missing something important.
The bin version works fine and I was able to install a bunch of other packages the same way though. I don't get it.

When a window manager isn't running, the windows will all spawn at top left, won't have title bars/minimize/maximize buttons/borders to drag resize windows unless they have a grip built into their own interface.
If you've got a launcher, you can try starting a terminal to manually launch your WM and watch for errors as it starts.

Fuck I need help. Laptops hdd died the other day, 305 and whatnot. I got ubuntu on a usb, loaded the live version up, and tried accessing my hdd. No files. It mounted, but no files. After fiddling I got it to mount some folders to a data folder, but it was nothing I needed, just a bunch of useless junk, and some recovery folders. I think it only mounted a recovery partition or something, which is fucking useless for me. I tried using gparted, found my 500gb hdd, then tried repairing it under an option there, but it said it needed a gpart command installed. Holy shit I think I just made a little progress.
I changed the Secure Boot mode from Windows UEFI to Other OS UEFI. Durr.
Now when I boot a UEFI installed Fedora 23 with kernel 4.3 I get a flash of some Tuxes across the top of the screen, then a gray screen.

So I finally found a linux distro that worked on my ancient laptop, PuppyOS. Lubuntu refused to work with my wireless card for some reason, but PuppyOS has no problems with it.
Problem is, if I try to boot without the CD my computer just keeps gong back to the motherboard screen over and over. It tries to load from disk, then it suddenly reboots and does the same thing.
