What's a /g/od tier tablet?
>>
Pixel C

Got an iPad Air 2 from my employer, its pretty good.

Looks good, great resolution, tons of tablet apps, long battery life, very light.

If you want something actually useful: Windows tablet

Streaming movies from Netflix or your NAS, listening to music, reading and sending emails, playing games, reading ebooks while in bed or on the couch, showing pictures to others, remote-controlling your apple TV, displaying the recipes while cooking. They're also pretty neat for doing all of the above while traveling.

On top of that, tablets are easier to use than PCs can entirely replace desktops / laptops for old people.

Of course if all you do all day is sitting in your room in front of your desktop, you will hardly have a use for a tablet. That still doesn't mean they are useless to the general public.

Just what tablet stuff can you do on a Windows tablet that you can't do on iOS or Android? Even MS-Office exists for non-windows tablets at this point.
>>
>>51227728

10/10 rack. Would suckle.
>>
>>51227824
literally any obscure piece of software?

I got a venue 8 pro crazy cheap and i'm liking it a lot.
>>
>>51227824
Having a full OS that allows you to install literally anything that works on Windows, including an Android and iOS emulator if you so desire to use those apps.

Stuff like VNs that will never ever make it to a mobile OS.
>>
>>51229227
>>51229264
Name one *useful* example.
>>
>>51230072
>Visual Studio
>SSMS
>Remote Desktop (not the gimped android one)
>Light Video Games (depends on your hardware)
>USB driver support for lots of devices
>Basically any software written ever
>Full linux/OSX VM if needed
>LOB applications(Like ConnectWise or LabTech), assuming you aren't a NEET
>MULTITASKING (no mobile OS handles this very well)

These are all things that would be very convenient having a tablet with full Windows.
>>
>>51230186
Why would I do any of those things on a tablet when I have a proper desktop and laptop?
>>
>>51229264
Most of those programs doesn't have good touch support anyway
>>
Happy with my tesco hudl 2
>>
>>51230205
A lightweight laptop would work just as well for those things. However, I tend to only take my tablet and laptop with me if I'm traveling, and if I leave my hotel room or office, I have a small tablet sling with a few pockets that's easy to walk/run with.

If I want to stop somewhere with WiFi, hook into our VPN, and fix something on a server real quick, I can do so.

I'm not saying that a tablet replaces a lightweight Windows laptop that can do all of this. However, convertibles like the Surface are pretty damn convenient for those of us who have a job and travel.

I treat my tablet+dock as a laptop, my beefy laptop as a desktop replacement, and my desktop as my desktop.
>>
>>51230224
I typically use a tablet with a dock or BT keyboard, unless I'm just browsing the web, or otherwise consuming media(books/movies/music).
>>
Anything with AMOLED. Tab S 10.5 still reigns king over all tablet displays since it's the only OLED display with RGB stripe.
>>
>>51230205
you've made it extremely clear you don't want a tablet, that's fine good for you

but all of those things are true and I enjoy having a super cheap, lightweight consumption device that can double for productivity in those ways. I don't need to carry around 3+ lbs of laptop. no, that isn't very heavy, but it is heavier than 0.75lbs
>>
>>51230402
You can't do anything useful on a manlet 8 inch tablet. You can pretend to use Word or Photoshop or whatever, but you would get your work done twice as fast with a proper computer.

im still not sure why you're crusading like this
sending emails, scheduling meetings, clocking hours, jotting notes, ordering parts etc can all be done comfortably in a bus or elevator. obviously you have no need for this but I have gotten great value out of a small $70 device running full windows
>>
>>51230819
you can literally do all of that on a phone
>>
>>51230938
cheaper than a decent smartphone, bigger screen, full windows
stop liking what I don't like waaahhh
>>
>>51230985
because i sure need a huge screen to send emails to other people!
>>
>>51229227
How are you liking that? I was thinking about getting one as a cheap portable windows computer for college.
>>
>>51230590
>he doesn't know that tablets can have keyboards
>>
>>51231047
I'm really enjoying it. currently getting my windows 10 upgrade right now
you might want to scale some windows a little bit if your eyesight isn't great, but it's surprisingly quick. I had a $300 netbook when they were first coming out and atom has come a long way.
build quality is solid, battery has been going several hours while i'm downloading lots of updates and software. get a small Bluetooth keyboard, not part of the case.
the other bonus, as you can see, is causing bitter NEETs on 4chin to work themselves into a tizzy
>>
>>51230590
>Implying there aren't tablets with decent keyboard docks
>Implying I'm not a richfag planning on getting a Surface Book
>>
>>51231015
Way to ignore the rest of his examples.

There are plenty of tasks where more screen real-estate and easier multitasking would warrant something further than a phone, yet not as demanding as a high-specced laptop. A laptop would be fine, but a tablet with a dock is fine too.
>>
>>51231153
even as a proponent of tablet pcs this just seems dumb. massively overpriced components with a first gen design that has already demonstrated growing pains (lots of bugs with the docking mechanism)
>>
iPad pro obviously.
>>
>>51231225
There will probably be some flaws, to be sure, but there's no other tablet-hybrid on the market that has the same specs and features as the Surface Book.
>>
>>51231304
what is it, sony? who have that similarly specced tablet for drawing, but the keyboard is separate. the thinkpad yoga is another digitizer-enabled convertible, and their update coming around new years will have a dgpu option. you're correct though, but unless you really need all those features note I'd wait a generation.

I wanted a Surface book but I realized I could get a much more powerful laptop plus a cheaper pen-enabled tablet for literally half as much money.

I'm building my own. I chose this board for the fact that it not only has a SATA port, but can also boot from it, so using a SSD instead of a SD card or eMMC is feasible. Odroid was the other one that I was seriously considering, and the SATA port/booting is what made me go with this one.

Also it's one of the few SBCs specifically supported by OpenBSD. I'm a fan of the OS, and thought it might be fun to try and use it as a mobile platform. It'll probably end up being more trouble than it's worth though. Wireless shouldn't be an issue for once at least, since the board has a built in wireless adapter, that is definitely supported by the OS.
>>
>>51227365
-Windows Hybrid 2-1/tablet/convertible/laptops(especially if they are enterprise) are literally some of the best tablet. Just because you buy old Thinkpads/Lifebook/Elitebooks make use them in the form of a portable desktop display.

-Boot Windows and Android tablet are another good option for the sheer versatility that it offers for software.

- Android tablet are okay and amazing depending on how good the hardware, and aftermarket developer support for the your tablet is. Is because Android has very good multimedia capabilities, and good ricing abilities as well.

Ipads are kind of meh tier.
>>
>>51231015
There, there. He just clearly doesn't understand the demanding lifestyle of a neet who never leaves the basement. If he did he'd agree with you that literally the only thing you need is a desktop system to play them kick-ass games on. His loss I guess.

I meant to say Chinese Dualboot Windows/Android amalgram tablets. Which are really crazy good specs, and cheap price.
>>
>>51231048
>>51231153
why not just a laptop, since you are already carrying all the parts of a laptop, and intent to use desktop apps on top of that?
>>
>>51231800
Again, a laptop is fine, but generally tablet+dock is lighter and smaller, so easier for me to carry on my back or drop into my briefcase.

Laptops that have a dGPU and great specs are generally not as portable.

I'd rather have a beast laptop and a tablet+dock than two laptops.
>>
>>51231950
Why are you comparing a tablet with a giant gay men laptop with a discrete GPU?
>>
>>51231980
I'm not.

I'm saying I have both.

Portable workstation for CPU/GPU-intensive work, tablet+dock for portable light work and media consumption.

Desktop at home for gaming.

Shoe-box sized? I'm a machinist. I intend to make the case out of aluminum, and it will be as small, and thin as I can possibly get it. Working with small, precise dimensions doesn't intimidate me one bit.

It makes me giggle like a small schoolgirl when morons post this on fairly innocuous comments like that.

Believe it or not, I've been on 4chan for a very very long time. Nearly a decade. I've never made a post on Reddit. Either way, I understand you're just expressing your discontent at my playful, one-word comment.

It's your right to not like me or my comment, but it's a big silly expressing your distaste by making a wild assumption on which websites I frequent.

Sorry for autism. I'm drunk and bored.

>>

>but generally tablet+dock is lighter and smaller
The thing is that its not. The weight of surface pro + type cover is bigger than comparable ultrabooks, and its also more expensive. You could have bought an ultrabook and a cheap tablet and get both a better laptop with a proper trackpad/keyboard and a much lighter and more durable tablet.
>>
>>51234893
spoken like someone that never used a x86 tablet
>>
>>51235073
But then I have to have 4 things.

I need a very powerful laptop as a portable desktop of sorts to do some of my work.

Everyone's situation is different, but mine is efficiently served by these 3 things:
>Powerful home desktop
>Powerful work laptop (I dock it to 3 monitors at the office)
>Portable device for media and occasional small work activities (Like loading up Visual Studio to fix a segment of code, or fixing something on a website with Remote Desktop to the IIS box, or utilizing one of our LOB apps that either only work on Windows or work best on Windows)
