There is something about this watch that feels incredibly good. The proportions i guess. It's smaller, like 36mm but it felt fantastic to wear and looked really good.

Unfortunatelly it was a friend's watch, he sold it and doesn't remember the modelname.
Any suggestions where to start looking, is there a catalogue of the older orient models?

Seems to be another Orient 3 star model.

There are quite a few variations, but they are generally good watches for their value.
>>
>>51199247
It's hard to make and paint it, you'd need a thin copper plate, special paint and to glue the indices very precise.
Def worth a try, but for starters i'd just look for a swap out dial that fits the dimensions of the watch.

There are tutorials on youtube how to draw your own dial with a program. Drawing that shit by hand will be unprecise and visible later on.

The Patek advanced research models were considerably more expensive than the group-owned brand equivalents.
Is it justified since "muh independent"?
It's majority inhouse, both the R&D and production, just like the group-owned ones.

I'd say the most innovative brands are JLC, GP, MB&F, RM and lately I'd say VC.
Notable mentions: FPJ, Laurent Ferrier, Kari Voutilainen.

I have an old Fossil FS-4303 that turned up and the battery is dead. It may have even burst, I'm not sure. The caseback is rectangular and there is a lip that I have tried prying open, but it just wont budge.

Well I would disagree with what you said at least as far as VC, JLC, and Lange specifically are concerned. They may eventually all have the same corporate overlords but as far as I'm aware they act as completely independent companies and don't share resources/designers/movements/etc. There is definite inbreeding within other parts of the Richemont Group and obviously other watch groups as well.
>>
>>51199574
Thanks, but that 20-second mark is where I'm stuck. The caseback doesn't just pop off like that. It's almost like it's fused which is why I'm thinking the battery burst. Would that even be a thing? I'm the noobiest noob.

Just fucking don't. You will be stuck swapping batteries and chortening bracelets for the rest of your life. Get into a normal earning position, visit watchmaker courses and then you can repair watches as a second income source.
Keep it a hobby and you will get better at it and be more passionate. Also you can quit any time.

Yes and no. Some factories in the south of India are still producing watches. You can still get new models on the HMT website. The newest models use Miyota movements like pic related

Those WUS project watches still use the last of the 17j HMT movements.
>>
>>51200668
The handwind HMT movements are old Citizen/Miyota designs manufactured by HMT in India, right? So now the current ones have actual Miyota-produced movements?

Probably the telegraph man didn't get there yet with the news of the close down.

Still I should get one of the under-40mm more classic ones, brand new before HMT is gone forever. Or at least until Swatch buys the brand.

Time to be upset.

The two amounts today would be $300 and $1480. Though advances in technology and production costs mean that the original $39.95 would still be able to buy you a 200m resistant watch, and advances in marketing and "prestige" mean that $1480 for a Rolex Sub is a fantasy.

Fancy expensive steel that is marginally better, solid link bracelets, fancy sliding adjustable clasp, some minor movement upgrades, sapphire crystals. There's some real improvements, but no of course it doesn't fully justify the enormous price increases, especially when you consider that that ref. 14060 or whatever it is in the ad would sell used today for far more than $1480.

Did super high end luxury watches in the tens of thousands of dollars range (inflation adjusted, obviously) even exist in the past? Obviously Patek and ALS and so on were around back then too, but were they as expensive back then as they are now or have their prices exploded proportionally to how Rolex and Omega and so on have jacked up their prices?
>>
>>51201582
They spend a lot more on marketing, they cost of manfacturing in a western country has increased significantly, they use higher quality materials now such as forging their own steel

But obviously their has been an unwarranted price increase, price isn't dictated by how much it costs ro make something, it is dictated by how much people are willing to pay for it
>>
>>51200991

$195 in 1964 is $1,481.82 in 2015 dollars.

>>
>tfw student and will have to wait at least 5 years until I will be able to afford it
>>
>>51201582
I probably can't bring anything up without you calling it marketing. They've made advancements in the materials of many of the important components including balance wheel, hairspring and even the crystal. That add shows a watch with a plastic crystal, not sapphire. Some of these advancements are not cheap.

This is part of the reason vintage Rolex are often such bad deals with a super inflated market. You can get a lot of interesting and cool omegas, for comparison, that come at a reduced price to their current models.

I really tried to like tudor, but no, it all is uninspired shit. Not even the ranger is nice. And i like the explorer 1 really much.
The problem with the new ranger is that the dial is way too big and appears empty, the elements out of proportion to eachother. This is the reason i hate new rolexes, explorer 2, datejust 2.

I think it's a pretty tasteful and well executed way to update the classic sub style with its own twist. It's definitely better than hurr lets take the same exact watch and make it a little bigger and give it big fat stupid lugs and a flashy shiny bezel to make it uglier route they took with the actual sub. You're right though, all the new Rolex models are ugly and the II updates are all worse than the originals.

Unfortunately it seems that now they're ruining Tudor too by slapping a new movement in it, putting another paragraph on the dial, and raising the price a bunch.

>>51202232
I don't want a fake watch, and I don't need an Aqua Terra, I just like it. I already have other watches that I like too. I'm not obsessed with it or anything, I just think that it would be a nice watch to buy when I get my first real job. You're right that I might change my mind by then and if I do then I guess I'll just buy whatever is on my mind then.

I almost bought a speedmaster a few months ago and now I'm glad I didn't because I realized it's not really my favorite watch ever anymore.

I just have a dislike for shiny watches with busy textures. I like watches with matte surfaces. To me it has the look of technology rather that jewelry. As one would expect I also like the Speedmaster Professional.

$1200 in 1969 is $7937 in 2015 dollars. Sure, the price of a pretty cheap used car, maybe, but that's still a bit less than a brand new Sub today. And that's for the world's first watch with an earthshattering new technology that changed watches forever, the price for the Grand Quartz and King Quartz watches that followed dropped pretty quickly after that

So do you want a specific style or brand or any other criteria to narrow it down? Because if not I guess I'll just tell you what I would consider buying if I was going to spend a few grand and only on new watches.

Gurandu Seikosha Nip Nong Springu Driveru Snowfrake desu~

Some other sort of GS, quartz or automatic or hi-beat auto or spring drive, they're all good.

Tudor Pelagos, the older one with two lines on the dial and not the brand new model

Omega Aqua Terra Skyfall

JLC MUT Moon

Some sort of JLC Reverso

Seiko spring drive tuna

Seiko MM300

A Sinn chrono or a 556

If you want vintage then just off the top of my head I really like Omega Constellations, Tudor Oysterdate, the Rolex 14060 or 1675 or steel datejusts or explorers (I don't know my references very well), Heuer Carrera, Speedmaster Professional or Mk 2.

Yeah, a decent if not amazing Bond film but the Seamaster in the film annoyed me considering it had an "alarm" function with no discernable alarm function on the watch. Considering it was specially made for the film you'd think Omega would've wanted to make a watch with an alarm, they could've made an updated memomatic. Having said all that seeing Bond wear a Bond NATO was neat as fuck.

Hacking is being able to stop the seconds hand by pulling the crown (when you're setting the time). It allows you to set the seconds exactly, which you cannot do on this movement.
Handwinding is being able to "charge" the watch by turning the crown. Automatic watches "charge" by the movements of your wrist during wear. Handwinding is be useful if you plan on not wearing the watch for more than a couple days, and don't want it to stop.

Some people consider one or both of those essential. Some people don't care. I myself don't think the 7s26 movement in this watch is accurate enough for the absence of hacking to be an issue.

Any idea how much this is worth? I found this watch from my parents place not too long ago, apparently it used to belong to my granddad, who bought it in the sixties or so and then my dad. Couldn't find this specific model on sale but somewhat similar models with the same age are about ~300EUR. I somewhat doubt that price really. I've seen decent examples of that watch which are offered for 75$ on jewbay right now.

But it's your grandfathers watch, it's a family piece. Might as well as fix it up to a running state.

Plus i really dig how it looks, but i think a nice brown leather strap will fit it best.

Besides, with a leather strap, it's going to be a fine dress watch anyway. These watches were made to be used so might as well do so.

Toughness and hardness are not the same thing. Titanium is softer than steel, it'll scratch much more easily.

>>51215865
Get a diver or a G-shock. Be aware though that a sapphire crystal can shatter in an impact though so if there's a risk of impact it might be better to go for something like Seiko hardlex rather than sapphire. The trade off is a little less scratch resistance for some more shatter resistance.

I usually wear a Seiko SKX007 because it's cheap enough that we won't be too hurt if it gets wrecked and it's a nice tough watch. The crystal isn't sapphire but I have yet to scratch it because the bezel absorbs most impacts anyway. It's also mechanical which is more sensitive to shocks and stuff than quartz would be but I haven't had problems with it.

Also if you wear it inside your wrist when you work you get extra smooth operator points and you're much less likely to beat it up and you get to make /g/ incredibly angry every time you post a photo of it.

If you love the designs (which aren't for everybody) go for it, you will not be disappointed. The fit and finish are great, they put good features/technology into the watches while keeping them at a good value, and they are very well regulated from the factory (mine is within COSC specs). As far as the in-house movements go that could be a bit of a gamble but they've been around for like 20 years and seem to be doing quite well so they definitely won't be going away any time soon.

Rolex also created their own steel because the steel that they were getting wasn't always up to the quality standards that they wanted. I can tell you from personal experience that trying to polish steel with imperfections in it sucks balls and 904l steel is way nicer to work with.
>>
FUCK ME DEAD!

I need to get me some Russian and Indian watches!
>>
>>51221999
As far as I understand the 316L on some of their rolexes was experiencing some amount of pitting and wear that they thought 904L would solve.

Additional corrosion resistance doesn't mean they're just trying to stop rust.

Stuff like this makes me cringe. 400 fucking dolarinos...holy shit m8!
knoife collectors are even more autistic than some watch "enthusiasts".
One can get a pretty nice knife for 30-50 bucks
But nope they need
>muh special material
>muh god awful to sharpen steel
>muh micro brand
>muh ugly design

those silly overpriced knifes look like toys, because they are produced for manchildren who then post that in edc threads and continue to remain a virgin.

Hey /wt/, I'm a total noob to watches. Whats a good cheap watch for casual wear. I mean my style is basically single color tee's, hoodies, jeans, etc. Is a casio digital good for a neckbeard like me?

I like the look of pic related (thunderbirds multipro), but I'm afraid that it might be of cheap quality because it's inexpensive, there are no reviews whatsoever and it's sold on some shady websites

Are there other recommended pilot watch within <300€ price range?

Lume on mine is fine. It's not Orient Ray levels but it's perfectly serviceable.

Those are some serious red flags going on there and I've literally never heard of them before. I'd suggest going with a Laco or save up more money and go with Stowa. Those two companies are two of the five original manufacturers that made watches for the Luftwaffe during WW2.
>>
what tools do I need to replace the calendar ring in my 2416 vostok? I'm going to salvage another for parts.

Anyone have any specific recommendations? This will be my first time working on a watch but I'm not really afraid to fuck it up. It's a cheap watch that can be replaced relatively cheap but on that note I really don't want to spend that much since I can replace it cheaply (hence why I'll do it myself).

I suspect I'll need some sort of case holder, I can use my pliers as a case wrench, and a hand puller. Anything else?

Thanks, I like this flieger-style type B. I'm afraid that the hands might blend in with the dial, hurting readability. Is the concern overblown?

Also I like metal straps better in general, would it go well on this watch?
>>
>>51225941
A mesh band might work. 99% of the time I see fliegers on a thick metal strap though.
>>
>>51225941
>Is the concern overblown?

Completely, that's the whole point of these watches is that they're extreme legibility. As far as a metal bracelet goes that's down to personal preference. I think they look much better on leather and that's how I've got my Steinhart.

>>

>I swear it looks bigger on pics ;_;
Probably because it's almost completely dial.
>>
Guys I want to buy a watch but honestly never had one before, can you give me some advice? The budget is around 50/60€. I'm not spending more on a watch becouse like I said I never had one and I don't know if I'll get used to it. I would like it with a leather strap and not too big since my wrist is small. I don't have some preferences, but that Russian watches look good.

That's it. As long as the lugs don't "overhang" a watch shouldn't be considered too big, especially if it's a flieger.
The lume is astonishing btw.
>>
>>51226036
It does look huge. How big is your wrist?

I might have to go with the 36mm one.
>>
>>51226105
How big is your wrist?

17,5 cm = 6,9 inches

>I might have to go with the 36mm one.
That's way too small, actually the 36mm models are intended for women. If you want to go smaller go for Stowa, but it's pricier.
