Does mpv play mkd files?
I've just about given up trying to enable vapoursynth and hardware decoding simultaneously.
Whenever I try it falls back to software decoding.Opening video filter: [vapoursynth file=~/.config/mpv/motioninterpolation.vpy]

You can't, unless you use some readback mechanism (like dxva-copy, vaapi-copy or the vdpaurb filter), and for VDA/Videotoolbox there is none.

I'm guessing it's impossible to use vaapi or vdpaurb in OSX even though linux uses it?

Yep, neither vaapi or vdpau works on Os X.

Same code as before, except now is an option insted of a scaler.
hardware decoding broke for me after I updated to El Capitan
