What does /g/ think of the Chromebook?
Is it worth $200?

If you need a decent cheap laptop that's mostly for internet stuffs sure. I love mine
>>
>>47723547
Handsome machine. Quite polished. Overpriced, though, especially for a botnet.
>>
>>47723547
> Is it worth $200?
Would say no, there are better tablets and stuff.

But if you're going to use it exclusively for a web browser / email thing, it probably doesn't matter and it might still be a sensible enough choice.
>>
useful as a momputer

Sounds pointless.

Besides the most interesting point to ChromeOS machines is that on some, you can install Gentoo or another Linux.

ChromeOS itself is almost pointless.

I got one on the cheap and use crouton on it so I have an OS that actually does something.
Don't use it enough to bother liberating it entirely.
Pretty good to watch a film on in bed or just shitpost the night away, otherwise entirely useless.

>>
I have the Samsung chrome book 2 13.3", it has.. decent hardware support from Linux. The speakers don't work yet so I'm fine with just using these USB headphones I have lying around. But it's a great ARM laptop and I'm really happy with the purchase, it has been fun playing around with it. There are plenty of rough sides but for how I'm using it is a great GNU/Linux machine, though a bit high priced

I would've, man, if that'd been the gripe. Honest to God, man, I would've. You gotta trust me, man.

Fortunately I use Xubuntu and absolutely every single thing worked OOTB. Lucky or whut?
>>
>>47724838
the speakers themselves do work on chromeOS, but the drivers in the kernel I compiled aren't made to work with ALSA properly. I'm too lazy to learn programming and try and fix it myself, but someone should hack it together eventually.

>>47724915
Yep, I'm using archlinuxarm. although I've successfully gotten graphics working with Gentoo, Void, and Ubuntu, archlinuxarm has everything the most convenient as possible for me at the moment. The setup really isn't that hard - flash the kernel to a certain partition, then extract one of their prescribed rootfs tarballs to another certain partition and put some modules for wifi.

Though, if you have it, I suggest you use their prescribed kernel but not their rootfs for chromebook2, their designated rootfs is pretty buggy at the moment, I used the generic one and added the modules and stuff as I needed to. It was a lot less buggy.

the video driver is not the best right now but it is good enough to emulate GBA and SNES games at 60fps fairly consistently but not entirely flawlessly, with hardly any 3d acceleration yet, most traditional window managers are pretty slow, but tiling wms don't have much of a problem. anyways it works way better than I expected, I just wish I could work on improving the support but I don't have nearly enough programming skills as I should.

I like mine. It's lighter & has a longer lasting battery than my 'real' laptop, ChromeOS is fine for Web stuff (which is most of what I use a laptop for when on the go), I have a Ubuntu chroot via crouton for other stuff. It's also a great laptop to give to people if they want to 'just use your computer for a minute' because you can just have them log in via their Google account. I looked at tablet+keyboard solutions but they all looked crap compared to an actual laptop design.

meanwhile i'm looking at an acer c720 for 160USD
>>
I bought one on craigslist off some deaf lady for $125 now I run linux mint xfce on it. Using it right now browses youtube/other simple taks fine pretty nifty
>>
>>47724155
performance increases very significantly from on crouton->liberating it entirely
>>
>>47725674
Why? It's a chroot, it's executing on the same kernel. It's not like there's a layer of virtualization or anything.
>>
>>47725690
No idea I can just tell you from my experience performance increased a whole lot, probably less stuff running in background
>>
>>47725589
I have a friend who has a c720, it's not bad at all for that price. honestly ARM is nice but it's been a lot of work, and there aren't many returns besides not being intel for the price point. intel definitely beats out ARM in terms of performance per dollar on these chromebooks. I know the old samsung chromebook sells for about 180-190 if you realy want ARM.

My school got them.
I cannot emphasize how hard they suck. I have never, ever, ever seen a shittier piece of hardware or software. Hell, even Wangblows (7+1) is better.

To begin, they are fragile. Closing the lid with a pencil on the keyboard will shatter the screen. Then, of all touchpads, this one is incredibly small and unresponsive. The keys are smashed together like dixons at a NASCAR track, incredibly difficult to type.

As to the OS, the login screen shows you with all the other users, without names, making it difficult to find yours to login. Atleast my school let you change your avi, so my Pink Floyd album cover was more distinct than gay-ass millenial selfies. The login windows weren't adjusted for size, so I had half a dozen ting login windows in front of a pinkish background, making it entirely angry. The start menu was located on the right of the taskbar, and included 9 items, plus account and sign out, hinting at the limited features. Chrome was the only application. I opened it, and as my 9 adblocks (?) installed, it lagged incredibly, incredibly slow. I opened Chrome again to Alt-Tab to mlg.tv when the teacher wasn't looking, and oh god the lag.

unspeakable/10 money could have been used to get Photoshop for the rest of the Optiplex 780s or better yet firing the principal

Can someone please get the C740 with the i3 and 4GB of ram and let me know how CS:GO runs on it?

I would literally switch to my c720/40 fulltime because this is the only game I play

i got my a $300 chromebook for $170 because it was refurbished, sweet deal except the battery doesn't work.

i still use it plugged in to the wall to browse at night

the browser is just one more application running in the tasbar, you can install more applications for instance i have an irc client. i think this should change in the future where there is no abstraction or concept of browser, but the browser tabs being the application tabs themselves

the keyboard layout is different, for instance there's no caps lock or win key or a lot of keys you would find in a traditional keyboard

it lags a bit sometimes, i couldn't even play a heavily populated area in a browser based game i played without it crashing due to graphics problems

its nice to have the botnet, all you need is a google password and you're in, ready to use a lot of services and have your history, passwords, bookmarks etc remembered

the screen quality on mine is not great, i would pay a couple of hundred dollas more to have a slightly faster chromebook with a better screen
>>
Buy the ones that have a FHD panel. Then, isntall crouton on them or dual boot with Ubuntu. There you go, a perfectly useful machine. If you want more storage, just buy an SD or replace the SSD.

Have that exact model with a 128 gb ssd. Currently loving it, it's not a bad deal. Running antergos, it easily surpasses everything chrome os gives.
The build quality is a little shit, and the screen could be better, but meh, it's great for on-the-go surfing and programming, and the battery life (6-9 h depending on usage) is loads better than whatI have gotten on any other inexpensive laptops.
I wouldn't buy it new, though. Buy a used one off of ebay/craigslist for 100 dollaroos and add a ssd, boom, you've got a portable laptop with 128 gb ssd for 150-180 $.

I like my Toshiba 2. Screen is amazing and it can handle everything I want from a portable device. Whenever I have to do real work I use my tower anyway.

So, as an additional device they are great, as a main machine I'd probably get something else.
