How come OS X and iOS are the only OS'es that 'just werk'? What prevents other OS'es to work as well?

They don't 'just werk', but buyer's remorse and marketing and circlejerks are strong.

Actually, for most users, I think Android 'just werks' better in most cases.

other OSes have to support thousands of different components, many of which are out of spec because they're made by chinks who penny-pinch everything and cut corners. that's why Windows crashes a lot and who do users blame? Microsoft. never mind they purchased some chink shit that's fake and was made during nightshift at some factory when no one was looking.

second problem is closed drivers for hardware and that's the Achilles heel of Linux. so Linux ppl have to reverse engineer everything and many times they make mistakes because they just don't know how some shit works.

apple controls everything: HW + SW and they buy quality components so they can spend time making sure shit works right.

that's apple's secret, in a nutshell.
>>
>>47650773
imo, its that apple has the same user experience across all platforms, more or less... and data entered into said platforms is all available vial the cloud.

its nothing new or amazing, but it is branded, simple, and like i said, cloud storage across every platform.

you can have a similar experience with microsoft, but not as good looking or branded. all other platforms, phones, tablets, ect you cant really have a unified cloud solution, unless you purchase 3rd party software and set it up on your pc/tablet/device.

So it doesnt "just work"

but....

google / chrome os / google devices will have just as much cloud integration and data unity

also, Microsoft will try to catch up.

(i still hate apple and that faggot steve)
("it just works" results in stupid consumers and oversimplified software designed to be used by retards with zero freedoms or customization)
(fuck you im allowed to have an opinion)

Sold my iPad mini 2 because it was just a glorified pdf reader and it pains me how i can get shit done more with my $100 zenfone. Installed Yosemite on my PC, but never really boot to it anymore. There are so many little things that piss me on OSX.
>>
>>47650861
>other OSes have to support thousands of different components
i dont think "it just works" is referring to hardware issues that phones or other computers/os's run into. its a marketing campaign. if you go into an apple store and ask what that is supposed to mean, its about a unified and simple experience.

iOS just warks because you've got the hardware and software being developed by the same group, and only a couple of relevant devices at a time, it doesn't update often, and only whitelisted apps can go to the store.
Meanwhile Android has phones and tablets are made from dozens of different companies running the gamut on hardware specs, has minor to major updates frequently, and a freer app market, which includes apps that are broken, or will be broken by an update, or sometimes rendered completely unusable.

What the fuck are you smoking? Android is NOTORIOUS for manufacturers not giving a fuck about your upgrades once you purchase the device. That's why Android is fragmented as fuck and antique versions of Android still rule and are the majority of marketplace.

Funny you should mention hardware. Apple hardware has a shit ton of issues. Hell, just the other day at IT I learned about two new ones for the 16" Macbook or whatever that model is called:

1) The ribbon connector for the hard drive is prone to failure (as in, 80% chance once the warranty expires). Feel free to pay Apple $300 for replacement (The actual ribbon only costs $20-ish, if you can find one for purchase).

2) The disc drive can get misaligned with the slot on the casing, resulting in discs getting stuck. Thankfully, the model I was working on still used screws so I could take it apart. Having to disassemble the machine to remove a CD is a Feature (c).

I just installed Fedora 21, a GNU+Linux distribution, and it "just werk'd". Installation was easy as hell and all I had to do was type
 sudo yum update
in the GNOME terminal and everything updated just like that. Then I tweaked the font rendering with gnome-tweak-tool a little bit to make it look less shitty. That was basically it, no hassle! :^)

OSX and iOS "just werk" because everything is locked down. Most features "break" because the user configured something incorrectly. If there's nothing to configure it can't be broken.
>>
>>47651578
lol'd. it will break with then next update. and good luck getting your xorg.conf working between video card/kernel updates!

been there, done that... and gave up on Linux a year ago.

linux is a time sink OS and everything's free as long as your time's worthless. if you have dozens of hours to spend tracking down issues, it might be worth it to you. if you plan on making money with it, hahaahah... good fucking luck! you'll be babysitting you OS more than you'll be working on something.

Apple devices werk for simple people who just need a device for web browsing and office apps.

If your a; gamer, someone who likes to upgrade your hardware (and I mean actually upgrade it and not buy a new device), someone who likes to try new OS's, or need backwards compatibility for anything, go with Microsoft and Android products.

I work in IT and for my job I need a virtualized test environment. To run all my VMs I have desktop with 64gigs of RAM and my VMs virtual hard drives are stored on a ssd raid 0 array (they're backed up I just want performance). I know I'm a rare case, but Apple has no solution for me. OSX doesn't support what I want to do. It doesn't werk for me and it never will.

You know what, FUCK APPLE.

I've been a loyal Apple Fanboy FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE.
I had the first iPod
I had the first iPhone
I had the first iPad
and so on.

And now with the fucking watch, I stayed up until 2:00am to preorder the thing, paid a ridiculous $700 dollars for it, plus $69 for the warranty, WITHOUT EVEN SEEING THE FUCKING THING

ALL SO I COULD HAVE IT ON LAUNCH DAY AND GUESS WHAT!? EVERYONE ELSE'S SEEMS TO BE SHIPPING BUT NOT MINE.

At least they charged me for the added warranty. On a watch I don't even have yet .

You were right.

basically it's windows before linux (or microsoft) existed. it was an os that was cool as fuck and super fucking expensive, so everyone ripped it off and called their os "unix-like".
