If they have the best hardware, why don't we just put linux on macbooks?
>>
OS X is already certified Unix.

GTFO shill.

A Macbook is more than just the hardware. I bought a Macbook because I love the aesthetic design. The engineering effort that goes into an Apple product is amazing, and people ignore it because it uses consumer hardware you could find in other computers. It's insane and it's ignorant.

Using OSX is part of the complete package. A beautifully designed aluminum Macbook with an esquisite operating system, that's Unix-based (and I can develop HAPPILY on) and with a UI that was made with time and care. This wasn't a rushed product made by developers contributing to some FOSS project.

That's how I feel. Take it or leave it. As for price.... Apple has an entire team for just making it look pretty. There's a lot of money that comes from the extra effort they do in this part. If you can afford a Macbook, buy it. If not, then don't. But to judge others for spending a little more on a Macbook rather than a lot less on a plastic Thinkpad that they can put Windows or Linux on is not cool. If that's what you want, then you can have it. I like Thinkpads. But I sure as hell wouldn't judge someone for buying a Macbook.

If you just want Linux then you really should just use a cheaper laptop. If you already have a Mac, I guess it's fine.

A Macbook is an integrated product. Everything works together as it is. I think that's dandy and that's Apple's philosophy. You should just see it as it is rather than be upset that it's not some other company or group's philosophy.

>pic related
It's an ugly hand drawn message on Gimp. Hardly a fair judgement. Although that DE isn't good. There's a lot of them though.
>>
>>47580791

I'll do it if you tell me why. What useful thing can I accomplish that I can't already do as well on my mac?
>>
>>47580791
>best hardware

The newest Macbooks have 1.2ghz quad core CPU's that can "safely" overclock to 2.7ghz.

In 2009 you could get a Q6600 quad core 2.6ghz for a decent price.
>>
>>47580902
Well people say KDE is the best looking but then you install it and get >>47580884

Then you have to rice it before it gets anywhere close to decent, which I still find horrible most of the time.

OSX is a simple design, but is easy on the eyes.

Why would you put the worst software on the best hardware?

Because Linux is not a desktop operating system. Deny it all you want but you know it in your heart that it's the gospel truth. This is not to bash Linux or anything it's just that unixes were developed in the 60s and were meant for mainframes and tape-based OSes. GNU/Linux does little to change that.

If you want to use an extensible open source desktop then support Haiku Project.

Stopping by /g/ a few times when you leave the touhou threads on /jp/ doesn't mean you aren't new here.

You're in that stage where you just recently started to try Linux, didn't understand any of it, got frustrated, then come back to shitpost on /g/ about how Linux sucks.

Actually I used Linux as my primary OS for a couple years and still actively use it on my servers since it excels there.

Linux is not a replacement for Windows, it was never meant to be one and it still isn't meant to be one (seeing as how most major contributions are still for server oriented tasks). Good example is the permission system which is still stuck in the multi user mainframe age.

>Still have to use the commandline for almost everything
>Same as above but for config files
>Sharing and syncing with other devices is still spotty as hell
>No support except for random forums where getting the answer you want is a total crapshoot
>Developers are usually completely full of shit and don't care about their users ("just fork it if you don't like it!")
>Crazy amounts of fragmentation

This is all fine for a server OS but a complete disaster for a day to day desktop OS.

Again, support Haiku Project if you want to see a good OSS desktop. It fixes most of the problems you find listed here.

>>47581425

Or he used it enough to know he doesn't like it. I've been here for a while and I still can't believe this whole "you hate Linux because you dont understaaand it" is still a legitimate argument to make. As if anyone who "understands" Linux is automatically going to find it to be the bee's knees of everything they ever wanted in life. I don't agree with that.
>>
>>47580791
I did this on my mbp, even compiled my own kernel and submitted a patch.

I'll be honest. I don't use morphos as my daily driver. Part of that is due to screensize, and no official external monitor support. I cant deal with 1024x768. I use linux, but for a PowerPC machine with 512mb of ram, can you cant beat MorphOS. Dedicated devs and youtube support. Yellow dog and openBSD for PowerPC, do they support youtube with HTLM5? I don't think so,

The Linux kernel has been in development since before OSX existed and some distros (Debian, Red Hat, Slackware) were released before osx existed.

Why does running Linux mean I should use cheap hardware? Does that mean I should run Windows if I have a ThinkPad?

>Also, why did the Haiku project hire shills when they don't even have drivers or users? That's a waste of money.
Probably just fanboys.

I was involved with the project for some time, It has a lot of good ideas, but it will never be completed to a point that it's usable for real work. Even if it did get the money to hire enough people to finish it, it has no focus.

>>47581187
>The whole "We're going to use tons of our own API's/standards, and our own special display server" thing kind of negates the Unix certified stuff.
I wonder how you think this negates anything, without having a fundamental misunderstanding of the standard.
The certification is for providing the infrastructure that makes it compatible to compile and run other POSIX compatible software, not that any OS X specific software is compatible to run on any other UNIX system.
>>
>>47580837
This is why I no longer use any Apple products. One day I realized I was just another cult-member, and I was thoroughly disgusted. I was one of the masses that define their existence with what products they choose to purchase and use. It's pathetic.

Turn the corner. Become your own person.
