I am 23 and work construction and i am looking to get into network security and penetration testing.
My question is what would be a good laptop to run something like BackBox or Kali Linux on as far as wireless support and general best bang for your buck.Would also like to point out i am not looking to duel boot this will be a dedicated practice laptop. Many thanks for your help in advance.

You dont need a specific laptop. Most can run stuff fine. Also dont get blackbox or kali theyre bloated just get debian.

most computers over 2 years old with conventional wifi cards should be fine in terms of drivers.

thank you for the help.
Plan to just hit the ground running at this point.
My general knowledge is scattered from just picking things up over the years.

at 23 I assume you have the attention span for it.
https://news.ycombinator.com/ Interesting stuff gets posted here
Just learn to code and learn networking and you'll be good, just learn stuff and don't just use a ton of 7 year old scripts packaged with metasploit or black box

once again thank you
i genuinely appreciate the help.

I have to say /g/ is not my home board but you are some helpful lads. I have basic experience in python. My main concern has been changing fields when all the work experience i have for the last 4 years is climbing walls and swinging a hammer.

I respect people who work in construction it dosent seem like anything close to easy. If you can just go home from work and read up on this every other day or so you should be good. Most of us here are assholes in truth. Its not hard to start if you can just invest some time.

Pic related is some practice exercises. Some are pretty chalenging
>>
>>47489952
that's the rough part that's all i get is a few hours a day during the week. Cant really go to school as i am out of the house at 4:30am and get home and anytime between 3:00pm-8:00pm
But i am dedicated to doing something i want to do and love for the rest of my life and not just something that pays the bills.

You'll get there anon. Just give it effort and time.

Will do.

OP, I agree you should really consider getting a portable computer to run your stuff. Your best chance is looking for a relatively cheap netbook, maybe even used. The pros of this are:
-You're obviously not restraining yourself to home, you can take your machine whenever you go.
-You may be thinking now that you're investing money in education through a machine, but that's just a tool. Your main investment will be the time you dedicate to learn and test stuff. If at some point you decide your machine doesn't cover your needs, you can buy a new one, but keep the older one as well. Having more than one machines doesn't hurt.
-Finally, a netbook is extremely convenient when you're on the run. Small, lightweight, fits almost everywhere. You can just put in in your backpack and escape via parkouring as soon as the feds track you down.

Best of luck.

Honestly most laptops would do. Just find one with a keyboard you like. Grab an external wifi-card though. A good starter card (which is not very expensive either) is the alfa awus036nha and a decent antenna.

Arch+ArchAssault/Kali or any other OS works. Whatever floats your boat.

Some extra additions besides the posts in this thread (some solid advice here really) is to participate in CTFs or download boot2roots (vulnhub.com) and write a blog about stuff you learn (yes really, it is a good way to actually be sure that you understand something, contribute to the community and even as an addition to a portfolio). A lot of the infosec community also resides on twitter so you might as well hop onto that.

Also, prepare your tinfoil hat and a bombshelter. Once you've seen some shit you never want to go out again.

prsim break is a ok resource for personal security
>>
>>47491372
same, and its a good trait to have. because you will be wrong :)

might want to find some security forums (not HF..) and/or get twitter.

i got to go but i'd just like to say that understanding how a computer works (low level), networking and how to code will help you tremendously. there are many out there that call themself "pentesters" that cant code for shit or know the OSI layers.

anyhow, best of luck to you. it's a lot of fun once you get into it!

Would a cromebook fit my needs or would the functionality be to limited?
