not sure if it's completely stable yet, I haven't come across any bugs yet. But I would wait until release until you install it on a main machine, the interface is very undeveloped right now. Duno what this shit is talking about, I think it looks ugly.
>>
I still think the 7 start menu is better. Looks better to look at, has easy access to stuff like music or the control panel (to the side mind you and not taking space to the list of programs) and its completely free of any modern apps that I'd never use, though I'm not sure if you can completely remove everything there.
>>
I fucking hate the new interface, it's like they've deformed back to '90s GUI and labeled it as new. It's horrible, why is everything one whole bright color? I know a OS shouldn't be about looks, but this literally hurts my fucking eyes.

>why is everything one whole bright color?
It's not everything, it's just the window borders and taksbar, you fucking autist.
Also, it doesn't have to be a bright color, you can just as well change it to white, gray or black.

And if you want an interface full of gradients, drop shadows and faux reflection effects, go fucking kill yourself. This isn't 2001 anymore, every company has already figured out that software should not look like a 3D simulation just because it can be done. Unless it's used to evoke familiarity with something that is unknown to the user (certainly not the case with any OS in existance today), skeuomorphism is completely useless.

Yeah, an interface that shoves advertising in your face. No thanks. Do away with that whole ugly block of "app" shit, and I'll be fine.
>>
>>47479463
I don't want that, I just want more refined buttons and borders. Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 had borders and colored buttons to make things more defined. Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 have NONE OF THAT, they all make one color without any borders, it's ugly and annoying to use. Go fuck your tablet you metro loving pussy.
>>
>>47478769
I liked this design better than the current build. I hate how search isn't part of the start menu, and I hate how you can't resize the start menu or pin programs in the list part. I also don't like not being able to change how all apps is sorted like in Windows 8.

>I bet you can't even restart Windows without rebooting the whole machine in 9x, NT, 2K and XP.

No, you can't, because NT isn't DOS with a crude overlay.

I can't remember if you can get back into Windows from "DOS mode," but I'm pretty sure you can.
>>
>>47481258
No wasted pixels at the bottom of your screen when you maximize/fullscreen an application. Seriously, this was a major gripe when Win95 was new.

>>47481280
>The program manager is shit
You can group your programs and launch them easily. Group icons expand when you double-click on them. What's the problem? It's a fair deal nicer than the wonky Metro start screen where you have to scroll back and forth to find the group you want since they don't expand/collapse.

Why do you think I'm unironically shilling for the piece of shit that is metro? Adding program shortcuts to the manager can be kind of annoying, which is my biggest problem with it.

>If you don't like File Manager, download one of the fine alternatives that are available.

but you shouldn't have to, that's the problem

>Works on my machine (TM)

works for me too, considering I'm running it on hardware that was $10-12k when 3.1 was a new product I would kind of expect it to, doesn't mean it isn't still shit, the taskbar is pretty wonderful for quick application switching

Eh, if I'm remembering right, it's just file, new, put the command, give it a name and optionally an icon and you're set.

>but you shouldn't have to, that's the problem
You shouldn't have to install 3rd party software to get a functional start menu back either.

>works for me too
Even on lesser machines it worked fine for the time. You didn't expect a 386 to run 20 programs at once, so alt-tab was sufficient for switching tasks. It even worked properly for switching between full-screen, textmode, and windowed apps.
>>
>>47481545

>You shouldn't have to install 3rd party software to get a functional start menu back either.

You shouldn't, that's why Windows post-8 is garbage.

>alt-tab was sufficient for switching tasks

it is, but I still prefer the taskbar rather than cycling through the alt-tab carousel when I'm running a lot of applications.

I just don't like 3.1 versus 95 and later, the start menu/taskbar really were useful additions to the OS and something long overdue

that and 3.x just plain looks like ass to me for whatever reason even at higher resolutions

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Windows 8.1, is in fact, Windows 8.1/Key, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Windows 8.1 plus Key. The key is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another expensive component of a fully functioning Windows system made useful by the Windows corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by Microsoft.

Many computer users run a modified version of the Windows system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of the installation key which is widely used today is often called "Windows", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Windows system, developed by Microsoft. There really is an installation key, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

The installation key is the license: the code in the system that allocates the machine’s right to run the other programs that you run. The key is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. A Windows key is normally used in combination with the Windows operating system: the whole system is basically Windows with a key added, or Windows/Key. All the so-called "Windows" distributions are really distributions of Windows/Key.

Windows 10 will be 'free' according to Microsoft. Even people using pirate copies will get the free upgrade. It's probably the smartest thing Microsoft has ever done.
Or the dumbest.
Either way it's going to drive a much higher adoption rate than any previous version of windows and the M$ Store will always be there, waiting for a big enough userbase to make it profitable.
Essentially, they're taking the Android approach but spreading it across phones, tablets, XBox AND PC.
>>
>>47482250
Do you really think pirates are going to buy programs from the store?
>>
>>47482263
No, but many of them will use Bing and get the integrated ads. This also helps save MS from having another XP -- a 10 year old OS they're forced to continue supporting because a large portion of the userbase is still using it.
>>
>>47482280
Do you really think pirates won't block the ads?
>>
>>47482285
Many of them won't. We're talking pirates, not paranoid /g/entoomen.
>>
it looks like a 12 year old designed it with the MS paint rectangle tool.
>>
>>47482263
Well, *I* don't, that's fucking retarded, but M$ certainly seem to. Besides, it's possible. Certainly with Android stuff, it's less hassle to just buy the damn 'pro' app at £2 than to spend four hours scouring through the usual sources looking for this obscure app, downloading a copy that's not 5 versions out of date, then finding it was repackaged with malware in any case.
I'm willing to bet that M$ are betting along the same lines, plus ad revenue, although anyone with a half-ounce of common sense knows how to block said ads, but M$ won't care - they'll get the contract to slot ads into the OS framework, so they get paid regardless of whether the ads get seen or not.

For the plebs, yeah, but fuck them. More money in my pocket when I'm asked to come get rid of all those toolbars.
Underneath all the fluff they've skinned it with, windows 10 is a very slick piece of software. And it's a massive improvement on 8/8.1 - at least it's possible to find what you're looking for with 10, without being forced to start blindly typing search terms into a tablet interface and hoping it finds the right thing. Windows 7 was still more traditionally-PC-User-friendly, but compared to 10, was a slow resource hog.
I'm not saying I'm excited about the final releases, but I'm looking forward to re-formatting, clean installing and comfortable use.
By the way, I've been running 10 in the LEAST stable configuration possible. Windows 7, upgraded to 8.0 then rolled back, upgraded to 8.1 and rolled back, then upgraded to 10 with release 9010(I think? It was early anyway), and kept patching up until now. One or two crashes, mostly relating to goddamn flash player being a dick, but otherwise?
Stable as a rock.
>>
Do they release new ISOs with new updates or do I have to update shits myself from the beginning?
>>
>>47482465
It's done through a windows update like service at the moment. In fact, even with the latest releases, you can uninstall it like any other service pack and revert to windows 7 - I'll be doing a clean install once the final release is out, but updates have been stable enough so far.

It lacks any form of structure or logic. Even the name "Start Menu" is saying nothing about what it this thing actually does or contains. Apparently it starts things, even this is a misnomer since you also need to click it to turn the computer off, or change settings?

Anything in the left upper list just cluttered together, there are links to two directories, then theres a link to PC settings, and then then theres a link to the file manager again, why is it mixed up?

There's a search bar at the bottom of the task bar and then there's also a search bar in the start menu. Why? Whats the difference between those two?

On the right hand side, there's a grid of applications, but there also a list of applications on the left side, whats the point of having both? Why are some icons in the grid displaying titles while the others of the same size are not? Whats the point in those messy alterations of tile sizes, which only makes looking at it more tiring?

What are those images that are apparently just displaying random ads for games, movies or companies doing there?

Why are some icons flat and some 3d?

Windows XP with the Zune theme still looks the best IMO.

The Start Menu doesn't need all these tiles and shit, I have 21+ shortcuts pinned to my start menu and that's enough for mostly everything I use.

Everyone, press Windows + D
