Just to clarify: I'm in 3rd year of sw eng at uni and I've seen more or less what's the deal.
Sticking to a sw eng job for your entire career would be a stupid move, you need to aim for a management position.
Other good possibilities are to take an MBA after graduation and get an uber paid job in some major consulting firm, or, if you want a more interesting job, to work in netsec/infosec.
