Like Apple hardware in real life, Thinkpads are just no different than your usual pik of over-priced plastic cases, housing nothing but your mediocre specification of processing internals.

Unlike Apple they aren't ridiculously overpriced for no reason and aren't designed to fail.

buy x201 a week ago

received it today to find that the supervisor password has half of the bios grayed out
>supervisor password
how do i get rid of this /g/?
what unholy bodging must i perform?

that said, having never owned a proper thinkpad, im very impressed by the build quality.
>>
>>47075604

WARNING!
Never EVER buy ThinkPads with BIOS locked (Supervisor) passwords, you cannot reset it by taking out the CMOS battery. The Supervisor password is stored on a chip and requires special equipment to extract it or a complete motherboard replacement.
>>
>>47075604
you fucked up real bad son.
>>
>>47075627
>>47075632
Can't you short out the security chip with a paperclip?
>>
>>47075646

If you do know what you’re doing, there is a $100 tool which can be used to recover the BIOS/Supervisor password from almost any ThinkPad (except some SL models) available at www.ja.axxs.net.
This link shows BIOS Password Contact Points for each model.
There are a number of ways to check if the ThinkPad is safe to buy, make sure it can actually access the BIOS. Sellers selling parted out ThinkPads that “Boot to BIOS” are safe. For you collectors out there, if the old ThinkPad cannot advance past the 00161 and 00163 (Dry CMOS battery/No time set) errors, there’s a good chance that the BIOS is locked because the time couldn’t be set.

My refurb t420 is doig this weird thing where it shows up as 32bit ?? It had 64 bit wangblows installed and I installed 64 bit xubuntu but it reverted itself to i686. It's really weird, It has a Sandy Bridge i5 which is obviously 64bit and in windows i am able to use 8 gigs of ram, but I cant install any 64 bit programs. I skimmed through the bios and didn't see any weird settings that may fix this. Anyone have an Idea what might be wrong.

There are going to be a lot of models that are overpriced.

Don't forget that models with a decent CPU and more than shit ram will have the price jacked all the way up.

The easiest way to do things is to find a model with shit specs for barely any money then use what you saved to upgrade it.

However, don't expect a great deal to jump at you immediately. Keep an eye out over the period of a week and you'll find something.

Crucial, Samsung, and Intel make the best SSD's. Also T520's can take mSATA SSD's if you want to go that path and stick two regular 2.5" drives in the machine for storage or whatever, or just one 2.5" drive and keep the CD/DVD reader in it.
